Animal pollination contributes to more than half of citrus production

<p><span>Animal pollination is crucial for the reproduction and economic viability of a wide range of crops. Despite the existing data, the extent to which citrus crops depend on pollinators to guarantee fruit production still needs to be determined. Here, we described the composition of potential pollinators in citrus (<em>Citrus</em> spp.) from the main growing areas of Argentina; moreover, we combined Bayesian models and empirical simulations to assess the contribution of animal pollination on fruit set and yield ha-1 in different species and cultivars of lemons, grapefruits, mandarins, and oranges. Honeybee (<em>A. mellifera </em>L.) was the most commonly observed potential pollinator, followed by a diverse group of insects, mainly native bees. Regardless of citrus species and cultivars, the probability of flowers setting fruit in pollinated flowers was 2.4 times higher than unpollinated flowers. Furthermore, our simulations showed that about 60% of the citrus yield ha-1 can be attributable to animal pollination across all species and cultivars. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain environments that support pollinator diversity and increase consumer and to producer awareness and demand in order to ensure the significant benefits of animal pollination in citrus production.</span></p>

Impact of climate change on alpine mass movement - animated drawing

<p>Observed and expected changes of climate-change driven alpine mass movements in the European Alps between colder and warmer conditions. Rising temperatures primary cause for the observed increase of rockfall in alpine regions. Above treeline, increased sediment availability and increased intense precipitation lead to increased debris-flow activity, potentially in locations without historical precedence. Warmer winters are leading scarcer snow conditions at low elevations and a transient state of increased snowfall at high elevations. This shift is leading to more wet snow avalanches, fewer and smaller avalanches at low and mid elevations, and increased avalanche activity at high elevations. No trends have been detected for rockfall below treeline, and findings for debris flows are highly variable. Expected, but not yet visible in observations, are more rock avalanches (despite a measurable increase of rock temperatures), changing ice avalanche activity (despite higher ice temperatures), deteriorating protection forests. Elements not related to mass movements (e.g., human infrastructure, ecosystems) are shown to remain constant, though in reality they may evolve faster than the discussed mass movements.</p>

Articles on Animal Abuse - Pakistan

<div> <div>This dataset documents media coverage of animal abuse in Pakistan as reported on the Dawn website, with articles retrieved in July 2024. Using the search keyword "animal abuse," we gathered all available articles, with the oldest article dating back to 2010. Each entry in the dataset includes the publication date, title, and URL of the article, but not the full article text, in line with copyright requirements. The dataset was manually verified to ensure that each entry was relevant to the theme of animal abuse, offering a timeline of media coverage on this issue over the years.</div> </div>

Animal-APdb: a comprehensive animal alternative promoter database

<p>Alternative promoter (AP) events, as a major pre-transcriptional mechanism, can initiate different transcription start sites to generate distinct mRNA isoforms and regulate their expression. At present, hundreds of thousands of APs have been identified across human tissues, and a considerable number of APs have been demonstrated to be associated with complex traits and diseases. Recent researches have also proven important effects of APs on animals. However, the landscape of APs in animals has not been fully recognized.</p> <p>In this study, 102,349 AP profiles from 23,137 samples across 12 species were systematically characterized. We further identified tissue-specific APs and investigated trait-related promoters among various species. In addition, we analyzed the associations between APs and enhancer RNAs (eRNA)/transcription factors (TF) as a means of identifying potential regulatory factors. Integrating these findings, we finally developed Animal-APdb, a database for the searching, browsing and downloading of information related to Animal APs.</p> <p>Animal-APdb is expected to serve as a valuable resource for exploring the functions and mechanisms of APs in animals. Animal-APdb is available at&nbsp;<a href="http://gong_lab.hzau.edu.cn/Animal_AP#!/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">http://gong_lab.hzau.edu.cn/Animal_AP#!/</a>.</p>

Data from: An inexpensive and open-source method to study large terrestrial animal diet and behavior using time-lapse video and GPS

1. The behavior of free-ranging animals is difficult to study, especially on the large spatial and temporal scales relevant to long-lived large species. Animal-borne video and environmental data collection systems (AVEDs) record behavior and other data in real time as animals conduct daily activities. However, few studies have combined systematically collected, long term AVED foraging data with environmental and movement data to test hypotheses on animal foraging. Additionally, AVEDs are often either prohibitively expensive, or require extensive fabrication and programming knowledge. 2. The video and coordinate animal-mounted system (VACAMS) is an animal-mounted data collection system based on a modified GoPro® action camera platform that records short, first "person" perspective videos of animal behavior on an automated time-lapse schedule. As most videos are georeferenced, researchers can return to the locations of specific behaviors and collect accurate, fine-grained data on non-woody vegetation and other habitat characteristics that may influence animal behavior. Moreover, VACAMS are inexpensive and easy to use. 3. This study describes VACAMS preliminary data on cattle foraging and a hypothesis exploring free-ranging cattle browsing habits throughout the rainy season in the tropical dry forest of Sonora, Mexico. I generated a database of vegetation types consumed by cows each month (Annual, Woody, and Leaf litter) and compared actual vegetation type frequencies to a priori assumptions based on seasonal patterns of forage availability. During the monsoons, when palatable vegetation was abundant, frequencies of annual and woody perennial vegetation in cattle diets did not differ from month to month. When the rains ceased and palatable vegetation became scarce, cows switched to leaf litter, dead annual vegetation, twigs, and dried leguminous fruits. 4. Open source software and commercially available hardware make VACAMS financially attainable for many researchers, land managers, students, and other user groups. VACAMS could be used on a range of domestic and semi-domestic free-ranging animals, particularly in dense forests where conventional observations are impossible. With improvements to GPS battery life and durability, the weakest points of the system, VACAMS could also potentially apply to studies of other large terrestrial animals.

Data from: Trophic level and basal resource use of soil animals are hardly affected by local plant associations in abandoned arable land

Stable isotope composition of plants and soil animals in abandoned arable land <p>Dataset provides raw data on stable isotope composition of C and N of plants and soil meso- and macrofauna. Dominating animal groups were collected in arable fallow systems 3 and 14-16 years after abandonment. Animals were sampled from the rhizosphere of three plant species of different functional groups: a legume (Medicaco sativa), a non-legume herb (Taraxacum officinale) and a grass (Bromus sterilis).
