Grey-brick buildings, an open data set of calibrated RC models of Dutch residential building heat dynamics

Building thermal modeling is the founding stone upon which numerous carbon reduction strategies in the building sector are built. Yet, as of today, little to no interpretable and calibrated models founded on real-world measurements have been open-sourced. This work attempts to remedy this deficiency and renders public improved results of a recently published stochastic model identification of building heat dynamics study evaluated over 225 Dutch residential buildings. Calibrated lumped resistance-capacity models are made available, along with thermal characterizations of the buildings and reported meta-data. The paper discusses how open-access building thermal models support a collection of building service applications such as building performance benchmarks, model-based control, demand-side management, policy impact assessment, and data augmentation. Insights provided present a starting point for open access benchmarks of building thermal dynamics, paving the way toward new scientific discoveries from common standards.

Estimating labquake source parameters: spectral inversion from a calibrated acoustic system

Laboratory acoustic emissions (AEs) serve as small-scale analogues to earthquakes, offering fundamental insights into seismic processes. To ensure accurate physical interpretations of AEs, rigorous calibration of the acoustic system is essential. In this paper, we present an empirical calibration technique that quantifies sensor responses, instrumentation effects, and path characteristics into a single entity termed instrument apparatus response.

Using a controlled seismic source with different steel balls, we retrieve the instrument apparatus response in the frequency domain under typical experimental conditions for various piezoelectric sensors (PZTs) arranged to simulate a three-component seismic station. Removing these responses from the raw AEs spectra allows us to obtain calibrated AE source spectra which are then effectively used to constrain the AEs seismic source parameters.

We apply this calibration method to acoustic emissions (AEs) generated during unstable stick-slip behavior of quartz gouge in double-direct shear experiments. The calibrated AEs range in magnitude from -7.1 to -6.4 and exhibit stress drops between 0.075 MPa and 4.29 MPa, consistent with earthquake scaling relation.

This result highlights the strong similarities between AEs generated from frictional gouge experiments and natural earthquakes. Through this acoustic emission calibration we gain physical insights into the seismic sources of laboratory AEs, enhancing our understanding of seismic rupture processes in fault gouge experiments.

Data for: Distance calibration via Newton's rings in yttrium lithium fluoride whispering gallery mode resonators

Dataset of Newton's rings images captured through the short face of a trapezoidal prism with a whispering gallery mode resonator positioned behind the prism. Each file corresponds to an applied piezo voltage over a voltage sweep decreasing in voltage steps of 0.1V (file names multiplied by 10). Both image data and oscilloscope data are included. Runs 18-27 & 42-53 use a green (530+-2 nm) filter and Runs 28-41 use a red (670+-2 nm) filter.

crop-images.ipynb is used to process the raw images located in FullDataset.zip into grayscale jpg images, these processed images are then fed into Ringanalyzer-simplified.ipynb that calls from RingAnalyzer.py to convert the 2-D images to a signal-radius plot based on fits of an elliptical pattern, finding ellipticity, centroid, and rotation angle.

process_run_logfit.m ultilizes the 1-D signal plot used to convert the piezo voltages to coupler distances, then a Lorentz fit is applied to the data from the oscilloscope - using lorentzfit.m to perform the fit. The final result is a log plot of the coupling linewidth as a function of distance.

The data for resultant plots can be found in ProcessedDataset.zip and can be plotted by plot_processed_run.m.

Figure 3.zip contains just the data subset used to generate Figure 3, with fig3.m to generate the figure.
