Implementing Visual Literacy Techniques among Future Educators in Pre-school and Primary School Settings

In today's society, the pervasive influence of visual culture underscores the necessity of audiovisual literacy, particularly for primary education teachers who have to navigate a digital, image-centric world. This research aims to evaluate the impact of a visual competence intervention on early childhood and primary school teachers (N= 224) assessing its educational and social significance. Employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the study involved a questionnaire on socio-demographic information and audiovisual habits, alongside an analysis of 31 open-ended questions focusing on Perception, Interpretation, Reception, and Creation/Production. Additionally, photographs taken by students post-training were examined for evidence of significant learning. The findings revealed an enhanced awareness among students regarding photographic content and messaging, confirming the hypothesis that future teachers lack essential visual competence. The study highlights the critical need for improved visual culture education among future teachers to better serve a society increasingly oriented towards audiovisual communication.

Enhancing Student Academic Performance Through The Implementation of Dynamic Gamification in Educational Settings

Dynamic gamification is a gamification strategy that uses features and game mechanics that are flexible and adaptive to engage users in a variety of tasks. Dynamic gamification, in contrast to traditional gamification, allows for real-time modification of game features in response to user behavior or other circumstances. This study aims to show whether incorporating dynamic gamification enhances students' academic achievement. Numerous factors, such as motivation, learning engagement, academic achievement, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction, will be tested in order to advance the objectives of this study. In this research, a non-probability purposive sampling strategy was used. An online questionnaire is distributed from March 23 until May 2, 2024 which featured 477 participants from all around Indonesia. However, only 400 respondents are considered valid, as the respondents must either comprehend the concept of gamification or have prior experience using gamification. The results stated that ten out of ten hypotheses had significant effect.

Empirical Study and Vision for a Holistic Serious Game Platform for Software Engineering Education

Serious games are becoming increasingly popular in universities to motivate students. Therefore, more and more lecturers are using game-based learning to encourage students to learn the subject matter. However, using serious games in Software Engineering (SE) lectures at universities is rather challenging as the subject is very practice-oriented and requires special kinds of tasks, e.g., practicing programming, software modeling, etc. Thus, building serious games and integrating such SE-specific tasks is a serious technical challenge and requires immense development effort. Therefore, before developing new games, students' preferences should be analyzed to increase the chances that these games will be played. To address this issue, we conducted an empirical study with 105 students to investigate the requirements and chances for using serious games in SE education in universities. Our analysis shows that students' preferences vary significantly and that there is no clear indication of a single game type that motivates all students equally. Therefore, our second contribution is a vision for a microservice-based Holistic Serious Game Platform for Software Engineering Education, which supports efficiently developing different serious games and integrating SE-specific mini-games and tasks. Hence, our empirical results and the presented approach support advancing research and development of serious SE games and also sensitize game developers to the needs of SE education.
