Soil and canopy temperature data from the Arctic LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots for 2007, Toolik Filed Station, North Slope, Alaska.

Soil and canopy temperature data from the LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots. In 1989 a treatment plots were established in a moist acidic tundra. Treatments include nitrogen and phosphorus addition, warming with a simple greenhouse, warming with nitrogen and phosphorus addition, shading with shade cloth and shading with nitrogen and phosphorus. In 1990 data logger was installed in block 2 to measure soil temperatures and basic meteorological data. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Sensors were placed in control, fertilized, greenhouse, greenhouse fertilized, shade house and shade house fertilized sites.

Nestling feeding data from Black-throated Blue Warbler nests, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1997 - 2010

This dataset provides nestling feeding data recorded by video cameras placed near black-throated blue warbler nests at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. We used camouflaged video cameras mounted on a tripod at nest height but about 10 m distant from the nest. We transcribed videos starting 10 min after recording began to avoid any initial parental response to the presence of the video camera. During each adult visit to the nest, we confirmed the feeding parent’s color bands and recorded its arrival time. We calculated the number of provisioning visits to the nest per hour (“provisioning rate”) for males and females separately, and standardized for differences in brood size by dividing provisioning rate by brood size. Nests were monitored on three gridded study plots at the HBEF: low elevation (250-350 m; 85 ha), middle elevation (450-600 m; 65 ha), and high elevation (750-850 m; 35 ha). See Rodenhouse et al. 2003 for plot details. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Federal sampler data for Black Sand experimental plots, 2018

This project is part of the Black Sand experiment to monitor effects of early snowmelt at Niwot Ridge. At each of five sites (Lefty, Soddie, Trough, East Knoll and Audubon) two 2x2 m plots were set up and two 3x3m plots were set up, with one of each size plot receiving 600 g/m2 black sand and one receiving 800 g/m2 of black sand. This portion of the black sand experiment was to look at snow depth and SWE using a federal sampler at each of the plots in 2018. We use an aluminum Standard Federal Snow Sampler to measure snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE). This device, compared to traditional snow pit techniques, provides efficient measurement capabilities that are less disruptive to the snowpack. Manual Federal Sampler measurements provide high accuracy point data to determine the amount of water in the surrounding snowpack. With a high downstream reliance on water within the regional snowpack, our weekly measurements give a time series of SWE throughout the winter season, offering consistent and dependable information for water resource planning and preparation.

SGS-LTER Standard Met Data: 1971-2010 Manually Collected Soil Temperature Data in English Units on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1971-2008, ARS Study Number 4

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. The objective of this study is to collect baseline meteorological data for the CPER. Datasets auto12_climdb and man11_climdb have been processed for quality and missing values. Additional information and referenced materials can be found: http://hdl.handle.net/10217/82446.

SGS-LTER Standard Production Data: 1983-2008 Annual Aboveground Net Primary Production on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1983-2008, ARS Study Number 6

The objective of the long-term ANPP study is to monitor long-term net above ground primary production of the shortgrass steppe community by species. There are 6 sites: ridgetop (ridge), midslope (mid), swale, ESA (replicate 1 not 2), Section 25 (SEC 25), and owl-creek (OC). Each site is located in a different landscape position or soil type on the shortgrass steppe and may be grazed or not. Ridgetop, midslope and swale are grazed and are sampled along a catena. Section 25 is grazed and is located in an upload grassland. ESA is an ungrazed upland grassland an is the control from the Ecosystem Stress Area experiment. Owl Creek is ungrazed and is located in the lowland along the owl creek drainage. There are 3 transects with 5 plots in each transect. Plots in the grazed locations are protected by cages. Because this is a monitoring effort, true replicates across the landscape are not available and it is recommended that the transect be used in calculating mean production at each sampling location.

SGS-LTER Bouteloua gracilis Removal Experiment Vegetation Density Data on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1997-2008

Six sites approximately 6 km apart were selected at the Central Plains Experimental Range in 1997. Within each site, there was a pair of adjacent ungrazed and moderately summer grazed (40-60% removal of annual aboveground production by cattle) locations. Grazed locations had been grazed from 1939 to present and ungrazed locations had been protected from 1991 to present by the establishment of exclosures. Within grazed and ungrazed locations, all tillers and root crowns of B. gracilis were removed from two treatment plots (3 m x 3 m) with all other vegetation undisturbed. Two control plots were established adjacent to the treatment plots. Plant density was measured annually by species in a fixed 1m x 1m quadrat in the center of treatment and control plots. For clonal species, an individual plant was defined as a group of tillers connected by a crown Coffin & Lauenroth 1988, Fair et al. 1999). Seedlings were counted as separate individuals. In the same quadrat, basal cover by species, bare soil, and litter were estimated annually using a point frame. A total of 40 points were read from four locations halfway between the center point and corners of the 1m x 1m quadrat. Density was measured from 1998 to 2005 and cover from 1997 to 2006.
