<p>This repository contains the resources in our paper&nbsp;<strong>[Social Context in Political Stance Detection: Impact and Extrapolation]</strong><br><em>Ramon Villa-Cox, Evan Williams, Kathleen M. Carley</em></p> <p>In this work, we explore the performance and extrapolation power of political stance-detection models using an existing large-scale weakly-labeled Twitter dataset collected around the 2019 South American Protests [1]. We construct transformer-based user and tweet encoders to embed users in a low-dimensional space using their text and ego-networks. We then train heterogeneous graph attention networks to predict user stances and contrast their ability to extrapolate stance predictions to different country contexts.</p> <p>The protest dataset, which was collected between September 25 and December 24 of 2019, contains 550k labeled users split unevenly across the four countries and contains over 36 million labeled tweets. It contains an additional 1.1 million unlabeled neighbors and 40 million unlabeled tweets. This repository includes the anonymized datasets necessary to reproduce the results and tables of the paper. In addition, we include the corresponding anonymized resources for the new weakly-labeled dataset around the 2020 Chilean Referendum presented in our paper.</p> <p>Following Twitter's January 2023 User Protection Policy update, tweet or user IDs related to sensitive political events cannot be publicly shared. We respect this policy, and only share:</p> <ul> <li>The anonymized user ID, their weak-stance label, the label predicted by each model and the data split (train, validation or test) the user was assigned to.</li> <li>Anonymized user network edges used by the different network classifiers</li> <li>The type of tweet the edge represents (Original, Reply, or Quote)</li> <li>The User Embeddings produced by the User Transformer and which serve as input for the different network models.</li> </ul> <p>This repository is comprised of the following files:</p> <ol> <li>Main_Predictions.7z: Compressed folder containing anonymized user IDs their stance label and each model&rsquo;s prediction for the country it was trained on. The performance metrics for each model can be obtained based on the test split for each country. This folder includes the results for the Chilean Referendum.</li> <li>Cross_Predictions.7z: Compressed folder containing the results of the cross-country experiments for each anonymized user. The performance metrics for each model, when applied on a different country can be obtained based on each complete file. Users seen during the training of each model are excluded as described in the paper.</li> <li>Tweet_Level_Edgelists.7z: Compressed folder containing &nbsp;anonymized tweet edge lists indicating its interaction type (Original, Reply, or Quote).</li> <li>User_Networks.7z: Compressed folder containing &nbsp;different anonymized user edge lists for each interaction type.</li> <li>Embeddings.zip: Compressed Pytorch tensor files containing the User Embeddings produced by the User Transformer and which serve as input for the different network models. R script used for: Telomeres in a spatial context: a tool for understanding ageing pattern variation in wild populations

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Ageing refers to the loss of organismal functionality with age, a process that is characterised by decreased reproduction and survival probability. In natural populations, it is expected that environmental conditions influence an individual's ageing trajectory. Understanding the role of environmental heterogeneity on ageing variation could provide criticleinsights into population resilience and species distribution but remains overlooked. Telomeres, the end cap of chromosomes, are a promising integrative physiological marker of an individual's health and a possible proxy to aid the understanding of variation in ageing trajectories. Here, we review the existing information on telomere length and its dynamics in wild populations distributed across spatial scales. Despite a relative scarcity of information, there is evidence for divergence in telomere length between populations facing contrasting environments. Nonetheless, a higher spatial resolution and temporal replication is needed to fully understand the role that environmental conditions play on telomere length variation. Since most of the existing studies are correlational, future field and laboratory experiments are required. For the first time, we demonstrate the use of population telomere data to predict species habitat suitability through Species Distribution Models (SDMs). This represents a promising new research area in the study of ageing pattern variation in wild populations. Furthermore, the inclusion of telomere data in future physiological-SDMs may improve our understanding of species distribution and population resilience. However, the use of telomeres within this context could be limited if no previous knowledge on the relevance of telomeres as markers of health and survival at the species level is available. Finally, we suggest some key practical and theoretical considerations that, ideally, future studies combining biogeographic and telomere data should pay attention. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Forbidden fruits? Ecosystem services from seed dispersal by fruit bats in the context of latent zoonotic risk

<p>Old world fruit bats are important seed dispersers of forest plants as well as of commercial fruit crops. Bats scatter seeds across landscapes and also aggregate (clump) seeds under feeding and roosting trees. In agroforestry landscapes, bat frugivory and seed dispersal can result in simultaneous accrual of socio-economic benefits and costs to humans, which may be further affected by human health risks from zoonotic spillover through human-bat interactions. In our study, we used an integrated approach to assess socio-economic benefits (from seed dispersal) and costs (from frugivory) from bats, in relation to latent zoonotic risk. We carried out the study in five agroforestry landscapes along India's Western Ghats, for selected commercial fruit crops (cashew, areca, banana, and other pulpy/fleshy fruits). Specifically, we hypothesized that people's perceptions of benefits from fruit bats would be correlated with measured extents of clumped seed dispersal in fruit plantations. We conducted ecological studies to investigate the effects of fruit crop type and plantation attributes on clump-dispersal, and in turn, on perceived "net benefits" assessed from interviews with plantation-associated people. We then explored associations between perceived socio-economic net benefits and spatial data on disease risk factors for fruit-bat-linked henipavirus transmission. We found that the extent of bat-mediated clump-dispersal was highest for cashew, especially in isolated plantations. People's perceptions of benefits from fruit bats matched the measured extents of clump-dispersal of cashew and areca. These benefits came with some costs from scatter-dispersal and damage to other fleshy fruits from frugivory by bats. Interestingly, we did not detect tradeoffs between perceived net benefits from bats and disease risk, which is of significance for bat conservation and its implications for human well-being. Overall, our results highlight that bat-mediated seed dispersal needs to be sustained as an important ecosystem service, despite some latent zoonotic risk, in the Anthropocene.</p>

Context dependent variation in corticosterone and phenotypic divergence of Rana arvalis populations along an acidification gradient

<p class="Normal1"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><i>Background</i></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Normal1"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Physiological processes, as immediate responses to the environment, are important mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity and can influence evolution at ecological time scales. In stressful environments, physiological stress responses of individuals are initiated and integrated via the release of hormones, such as corticosterone (CORT). In vertebrates, CORT influences energy metabolism and resource allocation to multiple fitness traits (e.g. growth and morphology) and can be an important mediator of rapid adaptation to environmental stress, such as acidification. The moor frog,<i> Rana arvalis, </i>shows adaptive divergence in larval life-histories and predator defense traits along an acidification gradient in Sweden. Here we take a first step to understanding the role of CORT in this adaptive divergence. We conducted a fully factorial laboratory experiment and reared tadpoles from three populations (one acidic, one neutral and one intermediate pH origin) in two pH treatments (Acid versus Neutral pH) from hatching to metamorphosis. We tested how the populations differ in tadpole CORT profiles and how CORT is associated with tadpole life-history and morphological traits.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Normal1"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><i>Results</i></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Normal1"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>We found clear differences among the populations in CORT profiles across the developmental stages, but only weak effects of pH treatment on CORT. Tadpoles from the acid origin population had, on average, lower CORT levels than tadpoles from the neutral origin population, and the intermediate pH origin population had intermediate CORT levels. Overall, tadpoles with higher CORT levels developed faster and had shorter and shallower tails as well as shallower tail muscles.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Normal1"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><i>Conclusions</i></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p class="Normal1"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Our common garden results indicate among population divergence in CORT levels, likely reflecting acidification mediated divergent selection on tadpole physiology, concomitant to selection on larval life-histories and morphology. However, CORT levels were highly environmental context dependent. Jointly these results indicate a potential role for CORT as a mediator of multi-trait divergence along environmental stress gradients in natural populations. At the same time, the population level differences and high context dependency in CORT levels suggest that snapshot assessment of CORT in nature may not be reliable bioindicators of stress.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p>Dataset for the paper&nbsp;Eye image effect in the context of pedestrian safety: a French questionnaire study</p> <p>Introduction: Human behavior is therefore influenced by the presence of others, which scientists also call &lsquo;the audience effect&rsquo;. The use of social control to produce more cooperative behaviors may positively influence road use and safety. This study uses an online questionnaire to test how eyes images affect the behavior of pedestrians when crossing a road.</p> <p>Material and methods: Different eyes images of men, women and a child with different facial expressions -neutral, friendly and angry- were presented to participants who were asked what they would feel by looking at these images before crossing a signalized road. Participants completed a questionnaire of 20 questions about pedestrian behaviors (PBQ). The questionnaire was received by 1,447 French participants, 610 of whom answered the entire questionnaire. 71% of participants were women, and the mean age was 35&plusmn;14 years.</p> <p>Results: Eye images give individuals the feeling they are being observed at 33%, feared at 5% and surprised at 26%, and thus seem to indicate mixed results about avoiding crossing at the red light. The expressions shown in the eyes are also an important factor: feelings of being observed increased by about 10-15% whilst feelings of being scared or inhibited increased by about 5% as the expression changed from neutral to friendly to angry. No link was found between the results of our questionnaire and those of the Pedestrian Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ).</p> <p>Conclusion: This study shows that the use of eye images could reduce illegal crossings by pedestrians, and is thus of key interest as a practical road safety tool. However, the effect is limited and how to increase this nudge effect needs further consideration.</p>

Data from: Parallel processing in speech perception with local and global representations of linguistic context

<p>Speech processing is highly incremental. It is widely accepted that human listeners continuously use the linguistic context to anticipate upcoming concepts, words, and phonemes. However, previous evidence supports two seemingly contradictory models of how a predictive context is integrated with the bottom-up sensory input: Classic psycholinguistic paradigms suggest a two-stage process, in which acoustic input initially leads to local, context-independent representations, which are then quickly integrated with contextual constraints. This contrasts with the view that the brain constructs a single coherent, unified interpretation of the input, which fully integrates available information across representational hierarchies, and thus uses contextual constraints to modulate even the earliest sensory representations. To distinguish these hypotheses, we tested magnetoencephalography responses to continuous narrative speech for signatures of local and unified predictive models. Results provide evidence that listeners employ both types of models in parallel. Two local context models uniquely predict some part of early neural responses, one based on sublexical phoneme sequences, and one based on the phonemes in the current word alone; at the same time, even early responses to phonemes also reflect a unified model that incorporates sentence-level constraints to predict upcoming phonemes. Neural source localization places the anatomical origins of the different predictive models in nonidentical parts of the superior temporal lobes bilaterally, with the right hemisphere showing a relative preference for more local models. These results suggest that speech processing recruits both local and unified predictive models in parallel, reconciling previous disparate findings. Parallel models might make the perceptual system more robust, facilitate processing of unexpected inputs, and serve a function in language acquisition.</p>

Alignments of chloroplast noncoding regions for context-dependency analysis

<p>Substitutions between closely related noncoding chloroplast DNA sequences are studied with respect to the composition of the three bases on each side of the substitution, that is the hexanucleotide context. There is about 100-fold variation in rate, amongst the contexts, particularly on substitutions of A and T. Rate heterogeneity of transitions differs from that of transversions, resulting in a more than 200-fold variation in the transitions:transversion bias. The data are consistent with a CpG effect, and it is shown that both the A+T content and the arrangement of purines/pyrimidines along the same DNA strand are correlated with rate variation. Expected equilibrium A+T content ranges from 36.4% to 82.8% across contexts, while G-C skew ranges from -77.4 to 72.2 and A-T skew from -63.9 to 68.2. The predicted equilibria are associated with specific features of the content of the hexanucleotide context, and also show close agreement with the observed context-dependent compositions. Finally, by controlling for the content of nucleotides closer to the substitution site it is shown that both the third and fourth nucleotide removed on each side of the substitution directly influence substitution dynamics at that site. Overall, the results demonstrate that noncoding sites in different contexts are evolving along very different evolutionary trajectories and that substitution dynamics are far more complex than typically assumed. This has important implications for a number of types of sequence analysis, particularly analyses of natural selection, and the context-dependent substitution matrices developed here can be applied in future analyses.</p>
