<p>Article, Dataset for article</p> <p> </p> <h1>Hop Flower Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extracts Coupled with Carriers with Solubilizing Properties—Antioxidant Activity and Neuroprotective Potential</h1> <p> </p> <h2>Abstract</h2> <div><span>Lupuli flos</span> shows many biological activities like antioxidant potential, extended by a targeted effect on selected enzymes, the expression of which is characteristic for neurodegenerative changes within the nervous system. <span>Lupuli flos</span> extracts (LFE) were prepared by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO<sub>2</sub>) extraction with various pressure and temperature parameters. The antioxidant, chelating activity, and inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and tyrosinase by extracts were studied. The extracts containing ethanol were used as references. The most beneficial neuroprotective effects were shown by the extract obtained under 5000 PSI and 50 °C. The neuroprotective effect of active compounds is limited by poor solubility; therefore, carriers with solubilizing properties were used for scCO<sub>2</sub> extracts, combined with post-scCO<sub>2</sub> ethanol extract. Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) in combination with magnesium aluminometasilicate (Neusilin US2) in the ratio 1:0.5 improved dissolution profiles to the greatest extent, while the apparent permeability coefficients of these compounds determined using the parallel artificial membrane permeability assay in the gastrointestinal (PAMPA GIT) model were increased the most by only HP-β-CD.</div> <div> <div> <div>Keywords: </div> <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/search?q=neuroprotection">neuroprotection</a>; <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/search?q=hop+strobile">hop strobile</a>; <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/search?q=inhibition+of+enzymes">inhibition of enzymes</a>; <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/search?q=xanthohumol">xanthohumol</a></div> </div>
DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF PEPTIDES WITH NEUROPROTECTIVE PROPERTIES
<p>The main purpose of this project is to search for novel compounds that will protect neurons against oxidative stress (6-hydroxydopamine, 6-OHDA) and glucocorticoids (corticosterone, CORT) in a human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) and elucidate the mechanism by which attenuated the physiological changes induced by these neurotoxins. We will explore whether this protective role of tested compounds will be involved also in the regulation of apoptosis, maintaining oxidoreductive balance, and stabilization of mitochondrial membrane potential. Furthermore, the involvement of the BDNF/TrkB-ERK-CREB/mTOR signalling pathway in neuronal survival will be examined.</p>
Data from: Burrowing crab effects on the properties and functions of coastal soft sediments
<p>Burrowing ecosystem engineers, such as termites, crabs, marmots, and foxes, can profoundly affect the biological structure and ecosystem functions of their environments. However, the relative importance of burrowing engineers on sediments are challenging to predict and are expected to be influenced by engineer density, engineer functional traits (e.g., burrow morphology), and environmental conditions (e.g., geomorphology, vegetation presence). To develop robust hypotheses predicting the impacts of burrowing ecosystem engineers, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis evaluating the effects of burrowing crabs on sediment properties, nutrient stocks, and ecosystem functions in coastal soft-sediment habitats (e.g., salt marshes, mangrove forests, tidal flats). The data set includes 1422 effect size calculations for the effects of burrowing crabs on sediments collected from 59 total manuscripts. The data suggest that burrowing crabs rework and oxygenate sediments and accelerate rates of nutrient cycling (i.e., nitrification and CO<sub>2</sub> flux). However, the magnitude and direction of burrowing crab effects depend on burrowing crab superfamily, the presence of vegetation, and their interaction. Crab burrow density does not consistently predict burrowing engineer effects on sediments. </p>

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii) after vacuum drying.
<p>The study was conducted on Pinus roxburghii (Chir pine) wood under a convective vacuum dryer. Wooden planks were seasoned at 45℃ above 20% moisture content and at 50℃ below 20% moisture content to final moisture content of 8 % to 12 %. It was found that all the physical and mechanical properties under study were increased. This study will encourage convective vacuum seasoning of timber for fast and defect-free drying.</p>
Advancing Wood Quality with Convective Vacuum Drying and its Influence on Multiple Properties of Mangifera Indica L. Timber
<p>This study explores the impact of convective vacuum drying on the quality of Mangifera indica L. timber, focusing on key parameters such as drying rate, time, and alterations in mechanical, physical, and anatomical properties. By significantly reducing moisture content, this method aims to enhance basic density, reduce volumetric shrinkage, and improve mechanical strength. Additionally, the study examines potential anatomical changes, including vessel and fiber dimensions, and assesses the overall suitability of convective vacuum drying for improving timber quality for industrial applications.</p>

Synergistic effect of salicylic acid and biochar on biochemical properties, yield and nutrient uptake of triticale under water stress
<p><span>The reduction of soil fertility and water sources in arid regions treats crop production. One of the practical solutions to overcome these problems is application of salicylic acid (SA) with biochar.</span><span> A pot experiment was conducted to consider the combination</span><span> of </span><span>SA with biochar</span><span> on biochemical and physiological parameters of triticale</span><span>.</span><span> Treatments consisted of irrigation regime (normal irrigation and irrigation according to 50% field capacity), salicylic acid application [without SA (SA0) and 3mM SA (SA3)] and fertilizer type including without fertilizer (control), application of 50 kg ha<sup>-1</sup> phosphorus (P), and application of wheat biochar (WB), cotton biochar (CB) and sesame biochar (SB) (2% w/w).</span><span> Under water stress, CB at SA0 and SA3 could improve the total chlorophyll by 119.4 and 70.6%, compare to control respectively.<span> Also, carotenoid content in SA3 treatments increased in the range of 75.8 to 34.6% compared to SA0</span>. </span><span>CB at SA3, created the highest catalase activity (11.4% increase) compared to SB.</span><span> At SA3, the highest RWC was observed in WB and CB by 26.7 and 18.1% increases compared to SA0, respectively. </span><span>At SA3, CB could enhance grain yield by 24.8% under water stress. </span><span>Under water stress, at SA3, remobilization efficiency from 63.2% in control was enhanced to 69.2, 74.3 and 68.1% in WB, CB and SB, respectively. CB and WB had better chemical properties in terms of EC, N, P, K and micronutrients compared to SB. These properties of BC and WB enhanced their ability to increase the nutrient availability, biochemical properties and consequently the grain yield enhancement, especially when applied with SA3.</span></p>

Evolution of plasma properties in 2D particle-in-cell simulations of pulsar polar caps as function of dipole inclination angle

Evolutionary and ecological processes determining properties of the $\bm G$-matrix
<p>The $\bm G$-matrix is the matrix of additive genetic variances and covariances for a vector of phenotypes. Here we apply the classical theory for the balance between selection drift and mutations to find the contributions to $\bm G$ from each locus. The fitness is approximated by a linear function of phenotypes. Fluctuations in the environment generate variation in the coefficients of the fitness function. We show that the $\bm G$-matrix can be decomposed into 4 additive components generated by selection, drift, mutations and environmental fluctuations. Selection is on average counteracted by the other three processes included in Fisher's concept of the deterioration of the environment, in accordance with Frank's approximate conservation law proposing that the response to selection at stasis on average is canceled by effects of drift and mutations. The theory illustrates that Fisher's fundamental theorem cannot be used to accumulate selection through time to describe adaption unless the other effects are corrected for. Another implication of the analyses is that the factor loadings to the eigenvector of the $\bm G$-matrix with the least eigenvalue are likely to indicate which characters contributing the most to the fitness function. This is information notoriously difficult to obtain in natural populations. </p>

Slope position affects growth and allometry of the endangered conifer Calocedrus macrolepis by mediating soil properties and microbial communities
<p><strong>Premise:</strong><em> </em>The allometric relationships among growth traits are highly relevant for a tree's fitness, however, the mechanism of how the slope position affects the plant growth and allometry remains poorly understood, hindering our understanding of the variation in allometry of trees along slope position in mountainous areas.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> A typical slope of <em>Calocedrus macrolepis</em> plantation in southwest China was chosen to measure growth traits and their allometric relationships. In addition, spatial variations in soil properties and microbial communities were also investigated.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong><em> </em>Slope position altered the allometric growth pattern with the larger allometric exponents of the tree height, diameter and wood volume relative to the crown size and height under the branch for the downslope. Additionally, most of soil nutrients, microbial diversity and abundances were greater at mesoslope and downslope, especially at the surface soil layer. The relative abundance both in Chloroflexi and Actinobacteria differed significantly among slope positions, while fungal dominant phyla abundances varied little across slope positions, indicating that bacterial community was more sensitive to slope position than fungal community. The growth traits and allometry were affected by the slope position, which is mainly caused by the variations of soil properties and microbial communities, and bacteria were more important than fungi in their relationships to growth traits and allometry.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Together, results emphasized that slope position indirectly influences the growth traits and allometry of <em>C. macrolepis</em> by regulating soil nutrients and microbial communities, which will provide important theoretical basis for the plantation management of <em>C. macrolepis</em>.</p>
DFT-GIPAW NMR properties of sodium-silicate glasses
<p>DFT-GIPAW calculations (with VASP) of NMR properties of structural models of SiO2-Na2O glasses generated by classical and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. The database contains compositions with 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% mol. Na2O (10Na, 20Na, 30Na, 40Na and 50Na) with 300 atoms and 600 atoms, aiMD models of 700 atoms with 22.5% and 43.1% mol. Na2O (NS22.5 and NS43.1).</p> <p>Structures (300 atoms) have been extracted at 300K, 1000K, 1500K and 2000K (300K.zip, 1000K.zip, 1500K.zip and 2000K.zip) . Models at 300K have been optimized by CP2K before DFT-GIPAW (cellopt.zip). Evaluating Cloud Properties Across New Zealand: Ceilometer Network Data
<p><span>A network of 16 Vaisala CL31 ceilometers operated by MetService at airports across New Zealand had data available and were processed using ALCF with a cloud threshold mask of 6e-6. Nine sites were in Te Ika-a-Māui / North Island, six in Te Waipounamu / South Island and one site on Chatham Island. Metadata for the 16 sites are available in the Processed Ceilometer Medata.csv file.<br></span></p>
