Data from: Tracing the origin of Oriental beech stands across Western Europe and reporting hybridization with European beech – implications for assisted gene flow
<p>The benefits and risks of human-aided translocation of individuals within the species range, assisted gene flow (AGF), depend on the genetic divergence, on the rate and direction of hybridization, and on the climate transfer distance between the host and donor populations. In this study, we explored the use of Oriental beech (<em>Fagus</em> <em>sylvatica</em> subsp. <em>orientalis</em>), growing from Iran to the Balkans, for AGF into European beech populations (<em>F</em>. <em>sylvatica</em> subsp. <em>Sylvatica</em>) that increasingly suffer from climate warming. Using samples from natural populations of Oriental and European beech and microsatellite loci, we identified 5 distinct genetic clusters in Oriental beech with a divergence (FST) of 0.15 to 0.25 from European beech. Using this knowledge, we traced the origin of 11 Oriental beech stands in Western Europe established during the 20<sup>th</sup> century. In two stands of Greater Caucasus origin, we found evidence for extensive hybridization, with 18% and 41% of the seedlings having hybrid status. Climate data revealed higher seasonality with warmer and drier summers across the native Oriental beech sites in comparison to the planting sites in Western Europe. Accordingly, we found that bud burst of Oriental beech occurred four days earlier than in European beech. Overall, our results suggest that AGF of Oriental beech could increase the genetic diversity of European beech stands and may foster introgression of variants adapted to expected future climatic conditions. Our study showcases the evaluation of the benefits and risks of AGF and call for similar studies on other native tree species.</p>

AALTO - Analysis of Drone Propagation With Ray Tracing From Sub-6 GHz Upto TeraHertz Frequencies in a Real World Urban Environment - DATA
<p>The data set includes simulation results from radio propagation modelling of TERAWAY links (at W, D and THz bands) in realistic 3D propagation environments. The modelling is performed using a Ray Tracing Tool developed in MATLAB environment at Aalto University. Ray tracing technique used in this tool is based on Image Theory (IT) algorithm. Unlike a quasi three-dimensional environment, it supports ray tracing in full three dimension. </p> <p>This data set contains propagation modelling results of the TERAWAY link. Dataset for: The biogeography of extant lungfishes traces the breakup of Gondwana
<p>Aim: Lungfishes are one of the two surviving clades from the once diverse grade of lobe-finned fishes leading to tetrapods. This classic living fossil lineage, which is the living sister to four-limbed terrestrial vertebrates, appeared approximately 425 million years ago and rapidly diversified. However, the evolution of lungfishes after their initial radiation is poorly understood, and whether their present distribution tracks ancient geographic change is a classic problem in biogeography.</p> <p>Location: Global</p> <p>Taxon: Lungfishes (Dipnoi)</p> <p>Methods: Here, we combine mitogenomic, nuclear gene, and fossil data to reconstruct the timing of lungfish diversification, and integrate fossil species in a Bayesian tip-dating approach to quantitatively test hypotheses of lungfish historical biogeography and divergence times. We sample all major living and extinct lungfish lineages, including three of the four species of African lungfishes (<em>Protopterus</em> spp.), the Australian lungfish <em>Neoceratodus forsteri</em>, the South American lungfish <em>Lepidosiren paradoxa</em>, and 13 fossils representing extinct lineages from across the globe.</p> <p>Results: Our results demonstrate that the divergences of the three major living lungfish clades closely recapitulate the stepwise fragmentation of the Gondwana during the Mesozoic. All of our model-based biogeographic reconstructions support a Gondwanan vicariance model for the origins of the present distribution of lungfish lineages.</p> <p>Conclusions: In turn, lungfishes provide an excellent example of how the integration of fossil data may drastically change support for historical biogeographic hypotheses previously discounted by molecular data and are one of the few living animal lineages that record incredibly ancient geographic changes in their phylogeny.</p>

<p>The expansion of industrial-scale wind-energy facilities has increased the production of low-carbon emission energy but has also resulted in mortality of wildlife, including migratory bats. Management decisions can be limited by a lack of understanding of the geographic impact of bats killed at wind-energy facilities. Several studies have leveraged stable hydrogen isotope ratios (δ<sup>2</sup>H) of bat fur to illuminate this issue but are limited in the precision of conclusion because δ<sup>2</sup>H values vary primarily across latitudinal and elevational bands. One approach to increase the precision of geographic assignment is to combine independent inferences about spatial location from additional biomarkers and other related information. To test this possibility, we assigned known-origin individuals of three bat species commonly killed at on-shore wind-energy facilities in North America (<em>Lasiurus</em> <em>borealis</em>, <em>L</em>. <em>cinereus</em>, and <em>Lasionycteris</em> <em>noctivagans</em>) to probable origin using δ<sup>2</sup>H values, trace element concentrations, and species distribution models. We used cross-validation calibrated combined model tuning to determine the degree to which assignment probabilities improved when combining datasets. We found that combining markers typically performed better than single approaches. For <em>L. borealis</em> and <em>L. cinereus</em>, combining all three data sources outperformed any single or other combined approach. With an accuracy set at 80%, an average of 39.7% and 36.0% of each species' total geographic range was considered a potential origin, respectively; stable hydrogen alone included 51.8% and 50.6% of the total geographic area. In contrast, for <em>L. noctivagans</em>, including trace elements did not increase precision, and adding distribution data to δ<sup>2</sup>H values only improved precision by 0.6%. Thus, we found that a combination of multiple biomarkers typically, but not always, outperforms single marker approaches, and optimized combinations of different markers outperform equal weighting of each marker. From a practical perspective, δ<sup>2</sup>H values performed better than trace elements alone; in cases where cost is a limiting factor, the stable hydrogen should be the single biomarker used in conjunction with species distribution models. Overall, these results highlight the importance of validating methods for each species they are applied to and show that combining information from intrinsic biomarker approaches is a useful tool to document bat movements.</p>

The occurrence and speciation of trace elements in streams and rivers are controlled by interconnected hydrogeological, biogeochemical, and anthropogenic factors that include rock weathering, climate, vegetation, and land use within the watershed. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a broad overview of trace element abundance, speciation, and mobility in streams and rivers. We also discuss how trace elements are mobilized into stream networks and transformed during transport. Select isotopic systems are reviewed in order to provide examples of how isotopic analyses can be used to understand geochemical and anthropogenic processes. The occurrence and speciation of trace elements in streams and rivers are controlled by interconnected hydrogeological, biogeochemical, and anthropogenic factors that include rock weathering, climate, vegetation, and land use within the watershed.
