Dataset: Glass-forming ability and structural features of melt-quenched and gel-derived SiO2-TiO2 glasses

Research data for Manuscript submission with title

Glass-forming ability and structural features of melt-quenched and gel-derived SiO2-TiO2 glasses

Abstract

SiO2-TiO2 glasses produced by melt-quenching or sol-gel spray-drying were compared to highlight their structural differences. Glass formation was possible by melt-quenching up to 10 mol% TiO2, while higher contents led to devitrification. Raman spectroscopy and solid-state 17O and 29Si MAS NMR confirmed the clear emergence of Ti-O-Si bonds and a tetrahedral oxygen coordination of Ti4+ leading to full network connectivity, as also substantiated by the synthesis of TiO2-doped cristobalite. In gel-derived glasses, water content induced partial network depolymerization, thereby enhancing the solubility of TiO2 in the hydrous silicate matrix. However, full dehydration during heating proved challenging due to the competing devitrification tendency: the glass-forming range in the anhydrous binary SiO2-TiO2 system does not therefore appear to be significantly enlarged by the sol-gel synthesis route.

Data from: A meiotic driver alters sperm form and function in house mice: a possible example of spite

The ability to subvert independent assortment of chromosomes is found in many meiotic drivers, such as the t haplotype in house mice Mus musculus, in which the t-bearing chromosomal homolog is preferentially transmitted to offspring. This is explained by a poison-antidote system, in which developing + and t sperm in testes of + /t males are exposed to 'poison' coded by t loci, from which t sperm are protected, allowing t sperm an overwhelming fertilisation advantage in monogamous matings. This system is thought to result in poorly and normally motile sperm subpopulations within + /t sperm, leaving t sperm unharmed. Conversely, we found that the fastest quartile of sperm from + /t males swam more slowly, both forwards and along their travel path, and had reduced straightness and linearity, compared to the fastest quartile of + / + sperm. Moreover, sperm from + /t males had shorter tails and narrower heads than + / + sperm, and these morphological differences covaried with motility differences. Finally, + /t traits did not show evidence of bimodal distributions. We conclude that the t haplotype drive results in lasting damage to the motility of both + and t developing sperm, although previous studies indicate that + must be more harmed than t sperm. This damage to all sperm may explain the low success of + /t males in sperm competition with + / + males, seen in earlier studies. We propose that the harm the t causes to itself could be termed 'spiteful', which may also be common to other gamete-harming meiotic drive systems.

Ideational Franciscanism: Form-of-life + Life-works

“Ideational Franciscanism: Form-of-life + Life-works” – MP4 (PPT2MP4) – 428.6 MB – 29:25

Until a new and coherent ontology of potentiality (beyond the steps that have been made in this direction by Spinoza, Schelling, Nietzsche, and Heidegger) has replaced the ontology founded on the primacy of actuality and its relation to potentiality, a political theory freed from the aporias of sovereignty remains unthinkable.

– Giorgio Agamben

Intellectual and artistic achievements are often a case of covering up an impoverished heart, though they need not be so. Perhaps this is also the reason why early Franciscanism discouraged bookish intentions and “scholarly disquisitions” in the manner of Medieval scholastics. Perhaps this is also the reason why the Franciscan Rule (form-of-life) went from fairly straightforward to florid and then to bare bones – ending with Francis more or less issuing a reduction, on his deathbed, very close to the (in)famous Augustinian proclamation, “Love and do what you will.”

Agamben’s “aporias of sovereignty” suggest the holes in ideological posturing, through which one might drive a cart full of wares destined not for the markets but for “else-where.” His hoped-for “ontology of potentiality” without measure (ends) suggests the otherwise suggestive devolution of this-worldly justifications for forms of knowledge that might, under the right conditions, lead to this proverbial else-where. Yet grounding it in the expectation of a “political theory” seems ill-advised. The remnant that he often refers to in his theological and a-theological musings has little to do with socio-political intrigue; and his own position in constructing a response to the “primacy of actuality” seems often based upon far too many actualities in the form of historically determined impositions upon subjects from the empty centers of ideological posturing.

Video presentation prepared for the colloquium, “Justice as Translation and Counter-storytelling,” UCILeR (Instituto Jurídico da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra, University of Coimbra Institute for Legal Research), ISSL (Italian Society for Law and Literature) and ATFD (Associação Portuguesa de Teoria do Direito, Filosofia do Direito e Filosofia Social, the Portuguese section of IVR), Coimbra, Portugal, May 26-28, 2022

Dataset from: An intuitive form of the energy functional for resistive plasma perturbations

The energy functional of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is extended to the regime of finite resistivity and transformed to an intuitive form, which separates pressure-gradient, current-density drive and stabilizing phenomena, analogously to the ideal version of the functional derived by Johnson and Greene. The resulting resistive energy functional is not in the form of a solvable eigenvalue problem but is intended to analyze the energetic composition of eigenfunctions which were calculated in advance by solving the MHD equations. The new resistive energy functional provides information on the different energetic drives and stabilizing phenomena of an eigenfunction. The new energy functional has been implemented in the CASTOR3D code in general 3D curvilinear coordinates and successfully validated across three different coordinate systems for a numerical test case.

Pin1 two-state structural ensembles of apo, FFpSPR-bound and pCDC25c-bound form

Pin1 is a two-domain cell regulator that isomerizes peptidyl-prolines. The catalytic domain (PPIase) and the other ligand-binding domain (WW) sample extended and compact conformations. Ligand binding changes the equilibrium of the interdomain conformations through an interdomain allosteric mechanism. We have described ligand-specific conformational changes that occur upon binding of pCDC25c and FFpSPR. pCDC25c binding doubles the population of the extended states compared to the virtually identical populations of the apo and FFpSPR-bound forms. pCDC25c binding to the WW domain triggers conformational changes to propagate via the interdomain interface to the catalytic site, while FFpSPR binding displaces a helix in the PPIase that leads to repositioning of the PPIase catalytic loop.

Here, we deposit the entire magnetic resonance-based CYANA structure calculation protocols of Pin1 two-state structural ensembles of apo, FFpSPR-bound and pCDC25c-bound form that allowed us to determine the coupling of intra- and interdomain structural sampling Pin1.

Endogenous rhythmic growth modulates priming of antiherbivore defenses in subsequently formed new leaves of oak trees

Priming of plant defenses provides increased plant protection against herbivores and reduces the allocation costs of defense. Defense priming in woody plants remains obscure, in particular due to plant development traits such as the endogenous rhythmic growth displayed by oaks (Quercus robur).

By using bioassays with oak microcuttings, and by combining transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, we investigated how leaf herbivory by Lymantria dispar and root inoculation with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Piloderma croceum prime oak defenses. We further investigated how defense priming is modulated by rhythmic growth of the oaks.

A first herbivory challenge in oak leaves primed newly grown leaves for an enhanced induction of jamonic acid (JA)-related direct defenses, or enhanced emission of volatiles, depending on the specific growth stage at which the plants where challenged. Root inoculation with Piloderma abolished the enhanced induction of JA-related defenses and volatile emission.

Our results indicate that a first herbivore attack primes direct and indirect defenses of newly formed oak leaves, and that the specific display of defense priming is modulated by rhythmic growth. Our results further show that the priming memory in oaks can be transmitted to the next growth cycle - even to the leaves of the new shoot unit.

Data from: Responses of invasive and native plants to different forms and availability of phosphorus

Premise—Many studies have assessed the various responses of alien plants to changes in overall nutrient or different nitrogen (N) availabilities. However, in natural soils, nutrients are present as different chemical elements (e.g., N and phosphorus [P]) and forms (e.g., inorganic and organic). Few studies have explored yet whether invasive and native species differ in their responses to varying P availability and forms.

Key results—We found that invasive species did not show an overall higher biomass production than that of native species under varied P conditions. However, the biomass response to organic P was, relative to the response to inorganic P, stronger for the invasive species than that for the native species. This coincided with the pattern that invasive species mainly allocated biomass to the root system under organic P conditions.

Conclusions—Our study indicates that while invasive species were not more promiscuous than native species were, they took great advantage of the organic-P forms. Therefore, the invasion risk of alien species may increase in habitats with more organic P sources.
