Insights into Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) infestation levels in local honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies of Ethiopia
<p>These data were collected from three geographic regions of Ethiopia from September, 2020 to June 2022 in order to determine the prevalence of<em> varroa destructor </em>in Ethiopian honeybee colonies. The data was analyzed to compare the <em>Varroa destructor</em> mite among the honeybee development stages (brood Vs Adult), by the hive types (Local traditional Vs Frame modern) and across the geographic regions (Oromia, Amhara and SNNPR). </p> <p>Both the raw and the partially processed data were available here. </p>
SegInfoSoS Versão 2.0 - Ontologia para Gestão da Segurança da Informação em Sistemas-de-Sistemas com OWL API
<p>As intensas transformações ocorridas na sociedade nesta década tornaram os sistemas de informação mais complexos. Tal complexidade se relaciona a uma categoria de sistemas definida como sistemas-de-sistemas (SoS). Embora o SoS ofereça benefícios às organizações, a dificuldade dos gestores de Tecnologia da Informação (TI) em lidar com asegurança da informação nesses sistemas pode deixá-los vulneráveis a ameaças e impactos causados por ataques cibernéticos. As ontologias podem ser utilizadas como solução para esse problema porque elas definem estruturas de conhecimento e promovem um entendimento compartilhado de um domínio, tarefa ou aplicação. Nesse sentido, uma ontologia de domínio (SegInfoSoS Versão 2.0) foi desenvolvida por meio de OWL API em Java para garantir a gestão do conhecimento em segurança em SoS e o seu entendimento compartilhado de modo que os stakeholders, gestores de TI e suas equipes possam evitar os riscos, as vulnerabilidades e as ameaças em SoS. Cabe também destacar a praticidade para a extração das informações da ontologia para utilização em aplicativos de celular, sites, smartwhatches, smartphones e eletrodomésticos da linha smarts, assistentes virtuais como Alexa (Amazon), Siri (Apple), Cortana (Microsoft), ChatGPT, entre outros. Tal utilidade simula querys de Sistemas de Gerenciamento de Banco de Dados para o uso de pequenas e médias empresas. </p>

Securing Your Crypto-API Usage Through Tool Support - A Usability Study
<p>Developing secure software is essential for protecting passwords and other sensitive data. Despite the abundance of cryptographic libraries available to developers, prior work has shown that developers often unknowingly misuse the provided Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), resulting in serious security vulnerabilities. Eclipse CogniCrypt is an IDE plugin that aims at helping developers use cryptographic APIs more easily and securely by providing three main functionalities: (1) it provides a use-case oriented view of cryptographic APIs and guides the developer through their configuration, (2) it generates the code needed to accomplish the chosen use case based on the selected choices, and (3) it continuously analyzes the developer’s code to ensure that no API misuses are introduced later. However, so far the effectiveness of CogniCrypt was never empirically evaluated. In this work, we fill this gap through a controlled experiment with 24 Java developers. We evaluate the tool’s effectiveness in reducing API misuses and saving developer time. The results show that CogniCrypt significantly improves code security and also speeds up development for cryptograph-related tasks. The feedback received during the study suggests that developers particularly appreciate CogniCrypt’s code generation. Its static-analysis is valued for keeping the code up-to-date. Yet, the further integration of generated code into a developer’s project still presents a major challenge. Nonetheless, our results show that CogniCrypt effectively helps application developers produce more secure code.</p>
Resilin distribution and abundance in Apis mellifera across biological age classes and castes
<p>The presence of resilin, an elastomeric protein, in insect vein joints provides the flexible, passive deformations that are crucial to flapping flight. This study investigated the resilin gene expression and autofluorescence dynamics among <em>Apis</em> <em>mellifera</em> (honey bee) worker age classes and drone honey bees. Resilin gene expression was determined via ddPCR on whole honey bees and resilin autofluorescence was measured in the 1m-cu, 2m-cu, Cu-V, and Cu2-V joints on the forewing and the Cu-V joint of the hindwing. Resilin gene expression varied significantly with age, with resilin activity being highest in the pupae. Autofluorescence of the 1m-cu and the Cu-V joints on the ventral forewing and the Cu-V joint on the ventral hindwing varied significantly between age classes on the left and right sides of the wing, with the newly emerged honey bees having the highest level of resilin autofluorescence compared to all other groups. The results of this study suggest that resilin gene expression and deposition on the wing is age-dependent and may inform us more about the physiology of aging in honey bees.</p> <p> </p>

Signatures of adaptive decreased virulence of deformed wing virus in an isolated population of wild honey bees (Apis mellifera)
<p>Understanding the ecological and evolutionary processes that drive host-pathogen interactions is critical for combating epidemics and conserving species. The <em>Varroa</em> <em>destructor</em> mite and deformed wing virus (DWV) are two synergistic threats to Western honey bee (<em>Apis</em> <em>mellifera</em>) populations across the globe. Distinct honey bee populations have been found to self-sustain despite <em>Varroa</em> infestations, including colonies within the Arnot Forest outside Ithaca, NY, USA. We hypothesized that in these bee populations, DWV has been selected to produce an avirulent infection phenotype, allowing for the persistence of both host and disease-causing agents. To investigate this, we assessed the titer of viruses in bees from the Arnot Forest and managed apiaries, and assessed genomic variation and virulence differences between DWV isolates. Across groups, we found viral abundance was similar, but DWV genotypes were distinct. We also found that infections with isolates from the Arnot Forest resulted in higher survival and lower rates of symptomatic deformed wings, compared to analogous isolates from managed colonies, providing preliminary evidence to support the hypothesis of adaptive decreased viral virulence. Overall, this multi-level investigation of virus genotype and phenotype across different contexts reveals critical insight into global bee health and the ecological and evolutionary processes driving host-pathogen interactions.</p>

Data from: Population genomics and morphometric assignment of western honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in the Republic of South Africa
Backgrounds: Apis mellifera scutellata and A.m. capensis (the Cape honey bee) are western honey bee subspecies indigenous to the Republic of South Africa (RSA). Both bees are important for biological and economic reasons. First, A.m. scutellata is the invasive "African honey bee" of the Americas and exhibits a number of traits that beekeepers consider undesirable. They swarm excessively, are prone to absconding (vacating the nest entirely), usurp other honey bee colonies, and exhibit heightened defensiveness. Second, Cape honey bees are socially parasitic bees; the workers can reproduce thelytokously. Both bees are indistinguishable visually. Therefore, we employed Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS), wing geometry and standard morphometric approaches to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of these bees to search for diagnostic markers that can be employed to distinguish between the two subspecies. Results: Apis mellifera scutellata possessed the highest mean number of polymorphic SNPs (among 2,449 informative SNPs) with minor allele frequencies >0.05 (Np = 88%). The RSA honey bees generated a high level of expected heterozygosity (Hexp = 0.24). The mean genetic differentiation (FST; 6.5%) among the RSA honey bees revealed that approximately 93% of the genetic variation was accounted for within individuals of these subspecies. Two genetically distinct clusters (K = 2) corresponding to both subspecies were detected by Model-based Bayesian clustering and supported by Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) inferences. Selected highly divergent loci (n = 83) further reinforced a distinctive clustering of two subspecies across geographical origins, accounting for approximately 83% of the total variation in the PCoA plot. The significant correlation of allele frequencies at divergent loci with environmental variables suggested that these populations are adapted to local conditions. Only 17 of 48 wing geometry and standard morphometric parameters were useful for clustering A.m. capensis, A.m. scutellata, and hybrid individuals. Conclusions: We produced a minimal set of 83 SNP loci and 17 wing geometry and standard morphometric parameters useful for identifying the two RSA honey bee subspecies by genotype and phenotype. We found that genes involved in neurology/behavior and development/growth are the most prominent heritable traits evolved in the functional evolution of honey bee populations in RSA.
