<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>An ELAC Nautik 3020 multibeam echo sounder with a 20 kHz transducer mounted on the hull of the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov, was used to collect multibeam bathymetry data during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Raw meteorological dataset from the Southern Ocean collected on board the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A Vaisala MAWS240 meteorological station was installed on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of Antarctica in the austral summer season of 2016/2017. This dataset contains the raw text files of meteorology data collected in the Southern Ocean and Atlantic Ocean as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Data coverage is from 17th November 2016 until 11th April 2016.</p> <p>Data files have undergone no processing or quality-checking and are as-recorded, directly from the instrumentation.</p> <p>Wind speed and direction parameters were recorded with a resolution of three seconds. Air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, solar radiation, ultraviolet radiation, cloud level and sky cover were recorded with a resolution of 30 seconds.</p> <p>Time of the measurement should be used with the TIMEDIFF to convert it to UTC. Latitude and longitude recorded are not corrected. Five-minute average cruise track and ship velocity of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.

12.5 kHz raw echosounder data collected on the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>These data consist of raw echosounder observations collected during ACE (Leg1-Leg3) using an EK80 WBT operating at 12.5 kHz. The instrument was calibrated at South Georgia during the expedition (Leg 3) and corrections were applied prior to calculation of the volume backscattering strength (Sv). The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was analysed and was deemed very poor at depths greater than 1000 m. Therefore, only data collected between the transducer depth (8.4 m) and 1000 m were archived. Sv values within this depth range that had poor SNRs (<2) were deemed to be bad data and set to a value of NA. Observations were made using a pulse duration of 16.384 ms (c. 24 m) and are therefore not suitable for fine-scale studies (e.g. analysis of krill swarms). <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains phytoplankton pigment concentrations sampled during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) Leg 1-3 and analysed using high performance liquid chromatography. Water samples were collected from the underway seawater supply every 3 hours and at multiple depths from select CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth) rosette deployments. Pigment concentrations have been quality controlled. Trace gas mixing ratios measured over the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/2017, during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The authors would highly appreciate to be contacted if the data is used for any purpose.</p> <p>We measured mixing ratios of CO, CO<sub>2</sub> and CH<sub>4</sub> with a PICARRO G2401 Gas Analyzer. Ozone (O<sub>3</sub>) mixing ratios were measured with a 2B Technology ozone monitor, model 205. We report five-minute averaged data cleaned from exhaust gas influence. Temporal coverage is from December 20, 2016 to April 10, 2017.</p> <p>The trace gas concentrations represent a large number of atmospheric processes that happen on different time scales. CO for example, has basically no sources other than combustion and can hence be used as tracer for air mass transport from regions with combustion activities (e.g., South Africa). CO has a lifetime of a few weeks. CO<sub>2</sub> and CH<sub>4</sub> are longer-lived trace gases which disperse globally. The data set shows that concentrations in the Northern Hemisphere are higher than in the Southern Hemisphere. Both trace gases are emitted by anthropogenic activities as well as natural sources. Over the cruise track, areas of the Southern Ocean were passed where these trace gases either outgas or are absorbed. Ozone is a secondary trace gas, meaning that it is formed in the atmosphere. Seawater temperature profiles from Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) probe deployments during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE)
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set contains vertical seawater temperature profiles measured by Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) probes that were deployed in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov. 40 XBT probes were deployed during legs 2 and 3 of the expedition in the period 25th January, 2017 to 17th March, 2017. The XBT probes are manufactured and distributed by T.S.K./Sippican Tsurumi-Seiki Co. Ltd., Yokohama, Japan (http://www.tsk-jp.com) and are of the type T-07, which is rated at a ship speed of up to 15 knots. These probes have a measuring time of 123 seconds and maximum measurement depth of about 789 m. Probes were launched from a handheld device from the stern of the ship either on the port or starboard side while the ship was moving. The deck unit recorded the temperature and the time since the probe was launched. This time was then converted to depth using the known fall rate of the probe in seawater and the coefficients provided by the manufacturer (WMO standards; Hanawa et al., 1995). The profiles were corrected for known surface biases (Kizu and Hanawa, 2002; Uehara et al., 2008). We provide the raw data, the data produced by using the coefficients provided by the manufacturer, and a corrected version in which we apply an empirical correction based on a comparison with CTD data (Henry et al., 2019), where XBT profiles were launched alongside the CTD deployment. The data has been quality controlled by comparing it to a number of CTD profiles. Data is provided at full vertical resolution and a 1-m averaged resolution. In addition, we provide derived variables such as surface mixed layer depth (temperature threshold) estimates. We are grateful to the crew of the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov and AARI for donating these probes to our project. Their use-by date had expired, however this was not seen as an issue. Particulate methylsulfonic acid (MSA), sodium and chloride concentrations from high-volume air filter samples over the Southern Ocean during austral summer of 2016/2017 on board the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Aerosol particles come from a variety of sources: a look at the chemical composition gives insights on the particle origin. Ion chromatography was performed for aerosol particles smaller than 10 micrometers (PM10 inlet), giving concentrations of sodium and chloride, as well as particulate methylsulfonic acid (MSA). For this, aerosol particles where sampled on quartz fibre filters for 24 hours each. The sampled filters were stored at -20 degrees C on the research vessel, transported frozen back to the chemistry lab of TROPOS and analysed for main ions. Temporal coverage is from December 20, 2016 to March 20, 2017. Quality-checked, one-second cruise track of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), undertaken in the austral summer of 2016/2017 recorded the cruise track using two independent geo-location instruments: one using GLobal NAvigation Satellite Systems (GLONASS; hereafter referred to as GLONASS) and another primarily using the Global Positioning System (GPS; hereafter referred to as the Trimble GPS). Daily log files were recorded in real-time from both instruments during the expedition and added to MySQL database tables. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset includes the raw data of stable water vapour isotope (δ18O, δ2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements taken in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2130. This data has to be calibrated using the calibration runs and applying an appropriate calibration procedure following the IAEA guide lines.</p> <p>Two similar datasets also measuring stable water isotopes (SWIs) in water vapour were collected during the same expedition and can be distinguished from this dataset due to the height of the measurement collection (8 m a.s.l rather than 13.5 m a.s.l). The three ACE datasets of SWIs in water vapour are described and compared in Thurnherr et al. L2130-i was operated only during two months in February and March 2017 from Hobart (Australia) to Cape Town (South Africa). Particulate organic carbon concentration in seawater profiles collected on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov in the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Seawater samples were collected from a Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) rosette, which was deployed from the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov. The samples were collected at a number of locations in the Southern Ocean as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the expedition that took place in the Austral summer of 2016/2017. Particulate organic matter (POC) is inclusive of all living and detrital material. It is the most common form of organic carbon matter that results from photosynthesis by phytoplankton. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A HYDRINS Inertial Navigation System (INS) was installed on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as it circumnavigated Antarctica as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).</p> <p>This dataset is uncorrected but has been converted from text files to daily comma-separated files for ease of use. Otherwise the dataset has undergone no further processing.</p> <p>It covers the period from November 2016 – April 2017. Calibrated data of stable water isotope measurements in water vapour at 8 m a.s.l. on the port side of the ship, made in the austral summer of 2016/2017 around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set includes the calibrated data of stable water vapour isotope (δ18O, δ2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at approximately 8 m a.s.l. on the port of the ship, taken around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometers L2120. The data provide continuous timelines of atmospheric water vapour properties in the marine boundary layer for studies of the atmospheric water cycle.</p> <p>The raw data from which this calibrated dataset originates has been published separately (Kozachek, 2020; DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3667535).</p> <p>Two other calibrated stable water isotope measurement datasets were also collected during ACE. Ammonium concentrations in surface seawater profiles in the Southern Ocean collected on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Seawater samples were collected from the ship's underway system or from the surface niskin bottle from the CTD rosette. Some incidental samples were collected from the surface using a bucket from the side of the ship or a zodiac. The samples were collected every 6 hours from the underway and from every CTD cast as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) which took place in the Austral summer of 2016/2017.</p> <p>Ammonium is representative of the recycled nitrogen pool in the upper mixed layer where inputs include marine production and terrestrial runoff. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains decoded reports of surface weather observations in the Southern Ocean made aboard the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), in the austral summer of 2016/2017. The observations were made by a meteorologist on board the ship and sent as telegrams encoded with World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) FM 13 code form. Posteriorly, the telegrams were decoded to produce this dataset.</p> <p>The telegrams were recorded on a 3-hourly basis and contain information about present and past weather; latitude, longitude, speed and direction of the ship; visibility; type, height and amount of clouds; speed and direction of wind; air, dew-point and sea-surface temperatures; barometric pressure; period, height and direction of waves; concentration of sea ice; etc. For more information on this type of report, please see the WMO Manual on Codes (WMO-No.306), Volume I.1, Part A. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains original reports of surface weather observations in the Southern Ocean made aboard the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), in the austral summer of 2016/2017. The observations were made by a meteorologist on board the ship and encoded with FM 13–XIV Ext. SHIP code form (Report of surface observation from a sea station). The encoded telegrams were sent to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and archived on the ship.</p> <p>The telegrams were usually recorded on a 3-hourly basis (at 0000, 0300, 0600, 0900, 1200, 1500, 1800, 2100 UTC) and on some dates on a 6-hourly basis. Five-minute average horizontal wind velocity data combined from both sensors (which has been corrected for air-flow distortion) from the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) 2016/2017 legs 0 to 4.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The horizontal wind velocity data from the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) 2016/2017 legs 0 to 4 has been corrected for air-flow distortion. The measurements from both the port and starboad side anemometer were averaged to five-minute resolution and have been combined via vector averaging of the data. The ten meter neutral wind speed (U10N) has been estimated using ERA-5 surface heat fluxes, which were interpolated onto the ship's track, and the COARE 3.5 drag coefficient.
