A coupled MD-FE methodology to characterize mechanical interphases in polymeric nanocomposites: pseudo-experimental data

<p>readme.txt</p> <p><strong>Abstract:</strong><br> (from [1])</p> <blockquote> <p>This contribution introduces an unconventional procedure to characterize spatial profiles of elastic and inelastic properties inside polymer interphases around nanoparticles. Interphases denote those regions in the polymer matrix whose mechanical properties are influenced by the filler surfaces and thus deviate from the bulk properties. They are of particular relevance in case of nano-sized filler particles with a comparatively large surface-to-volume ratio and hence can explain the frequent observation that the overall properties of polymer nanocomposites cannot be determined by classical mixing rules, which only consider the behavior of the individual constituents.<br> <br> Interphase characterization for nanocomposites poses hardly solvable challengesto the experimenter and is still an unsolved problem in many cases. Instead of real experiments, we perform pseudo experiments using our recently developed Capriccio method, which is an MD-FE domain-decomposition tool specifically designed for amorphous polymers. These pseudo-experimental data then serve as input for a typical inverse parameter identification. With this procedure, spatially varying mechanical properties inside the polymer are, for the first time, translated into intuitively understandable profiles of continuum mechanical parameters.</p> <p><br> As a model material, we employ silica-enforced polystyrene, for which our procedure reveals exponential saturation profiles for Young&rsquo;s modulus and the yield stress inside the interphase, where the former takes about seven times the bulk value at the particle surface and the latter roughly triples. Interestingly, hardening coefficient and Poisson&rsquo;s ratio of the polymer remain nearly constant inside the interphase. These two resolutions are coupled in a concurrent multiscale fashion using the so-called Capriccio method. We observe the deformation state of the MD and FE domain, as well as the relative displacement of the two nanoparticles with respect to each other. Prevalence and Characterization of Asymptomatic Thyroid Nodules in Assin North District, Ghana

<p><strong>Study design and sampling </strong></p> <p>The study was cross-sectional involving six (6) communities in the Assin North District of the Central Region of Ghana. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, with this reference number: UCCIRB/EXT/2017/18. All community entry protocols with local authorities were observed before the study commenced.&nbsp; Further, protocol involving informed consent was also duly observed during and after this study. Both verbal and written consent were obtained from each participant prior to participation. Participation in the study was strictly on voluntary basis.</p> <p>Each of these six (6) communities was considered a stratum in which all households were listed to constitute a sampling frame from which the respective number of households in each community were sampled using systematic random sampling technique. The sampling interval (<em>K</em><sup>th</sup>) in each community was determined by dividing the total number of listed households (N) by the number of households respectively require (n) (based on proportion-to-population size) as shown in Table 1. The simple random sampling technique was then employed to select the first household (<em>i</em>&lt;<em>K</em>) in each community, from which every <em>K</em><sup>th</sup> household was selected until the expected number of households in each community was met. One eligible consenting participant in each selected household was then randomly selected for the study.&nbsp; In a few instances where there were no consenting or eligible participant, the next household on the roll was considered.</p> <p>Exclusion criteria included participants with anterior neck swelling or clinical evidence of thyroid disease, smokers, persons on lithium, phenytoin, oral contraceptive drugs, and women during menstruation, pregnant women or women who had delivered within the last 12 months and persons with any systemic disorder</p> <p><strong>Data collection</strong></p> <p>Data collection was conducted in July, 2019 in two phases. The first phase consisted of face-to-face interviews with participants using a structured interview guide to elicit socio-demographic information such as age, sex, marital status, and highest level of education; history dietary salt intake (often intake- at least 5g or one teaspoon of iodized salt per day and not often intake- less than 5g or one teaspoon of iodized salt per day or not at all); and history of alcohol intake (yes- consumed alcohol regardless of quantity and no- had not consume alcohol before). Anthropometric measurements of body weight (kg) and height (cm) were measured using standard anthropometric techniques and further computed to generate measures of body surface area (BSA) and body mass index (BMI). Data collection in the phase was conducted by six (6) trained research assistants from UCCSMS and duly supervised by key investigators (listed authors) of the study.</p> <p>The second phase of the data collection mainly focused on diagnostic imaging of the thyroid gland by a specialist radiologist with over five (5) working experience in thyroid examination using various imaging technologies. A screening center was staged in each of the study communities on different days while ensuring that such days did not conflict with market days or other important community events. Participants who were interviewed at the household level were given an identification chit to present with to the screening stage for easy synchronization of their interview data with thyroid data. Given that ultrasound has been recognized as the initial imaging modality of choice for the early detection of thyroid nodules [2,9,22,23], a real-time ultrasound scanner (MEDISON SA8000SE-MAI, 1003 Dachi-Dong, Gangnam-Gu, Seoul Korea) with a 7.5 MHz, 50 mm linear transducer was used in examining the thyroid gland of study participants.</p> <p>Participants were examined while in a supine position with hyperextended cervical spine. Ultrasound gel was applied over the thyroid area with the transducer directly placed on the skin over the thyroid gland. Longitudinal and transverse scans were performed, to obtain length and width in centimeters, of each thyroid nodule. If there were multiple nodules in a single thyroid lobe only the dimensions of the largest were recorded. Documented characteristics of thyroid nodules included the location of nodules in the thyroid lobe; number of nodules (solitary or multiple), nodule composition (cyst, solid or mixed), calcifications, and nodule size (length and width in centimeters).&nbsp; Out of the 343 participants interviewed in the initial phase of the data collection, 23 participants failed showed up for the thyroid screening in the second phase despite countless attempts to contact them. Hence the current study is based on 320 participants who were successfully interviewed and screened.</p> <p><strong>Statistical analysis</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The data was captured using SPSS and later exported to STATA 11.0 for further management and analysis. A protocol was designed from the outset for imputing, ensuring data quality and preserving of data for reuse. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation were used to summarize participants&rsquo; socio-demographic and thyroid characteristics. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine factors associated with ATN. Odds ratios and corresponding confidence intervals were reported with statistical significance at p &lt; 0.05</p>

Statistical characterization of Andalusian wave climate for several combinations of Global Climate Models and Regional Climate Models and periods 2026 - 2045 and 2081 - 2100.

<p>The following text is an extract of the extended abstract entitled &quot;<strong>Parametric Characterization of Wave Climate along the Andalusian Coast for Non-Stationary Stochastic Simulation</strong>&quot; whose authors are Manuel Cobos, Pedro Maga&ntilde;a, Pedro Oti&ntilde;ar and Asunci&oacute;n Baquerizo, and that was included&nbsp;in proceedings of <em>39th IAHR World Congress</em> where this dataset is included.</p> <p><em>Processed data comes from PIMA Adapta Costas project (Ram&iacute;rez et al., 2019), in particular, from projections of maritime climate for 2026-2045 and 2081-2100. Sea climate contains, among other information, time series of the significant wave height (H<sub>s</sub>) obtained for several combinations of GCM-RCM projections of EUR-11 for the RCP 8.5. GCM-RCM combinations ACCE, CMCC, CNRM, GFDL, HADG, IPSL, MIRO with a 0.1 degrees grid were used for the Atlantic facade while CNRM, HADG, IPSL, MIRO, MEDC, MPIE, ESM2, EART models with 1/11 degrees were used for the Mediterranean one. A total of 210 locations were analyzed, 54 at the Atlantic facade and 156 at the Mediterranean one (Figure 1). The data was bias adjusted using the Empirical Quantile Mapping (D&eacute;qu&eacute; et al., 2007; Michelangeli et al., 2009). Information of the significant wave height and the dependence between the values at a given time with previous values with a VAR(q) model is already available. </em></p> <p><em>At each location, the methodology of Lira-Loarca et al. (2021) was applied, using the software described in Cobos et al. (2022a). More precisely, for every GCM-RCM (hereinafter, model n for n = 1, .., N where N = 7 for Atlantic data and N = 8 for the Mediterranean data), a non-stationary marginal distribution of H<sub>s</sub>, , assuming that the year was the largest periodicity of the climate, was fitted to data using a lognormal model for the central part and two generalized Pareto distribution for the lower and upper tails, as in Solari and Losada (2011). The non- stationarity is considered by assuming a decomposition of the parameters of the distribution and of the percentiles of the common end points of the interval into a trigonometric truncated expansion.</em></p> <p><em>In addition, the coefficients of the matrix, C<sub>n</sub>, of a VAR(q) model with q up to 92 hours were estimated. Dataset: Characterizing Anti-Asian Rhetoric During The COVID-19 Pandemic: A Sentiment Analysis Case Study on Twitter

<p>This is the dataset, trained model, and software companion for the paper titled: Characterizing Anti-Asian Rhetoric During The COVID-19 Pandemic: A Sentiment Analysis Case Study on Twitter accepted for the Workshop on Data for the Wellbeing of Most Vulnerable of the&nbsp;ICWSM 2022 conference.</p> <p>The COVID-19 pandemic has shown a measurable increase in the usage of sinophobic comments or terms on online social media platforms. In the United States, Asian Americans have been primarily targeted by violence and hate speech stemming from negative sentiments about the origins of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus. While most published research focuses on extracting these sentiments from social media data, it does not connect the specific news events during the pandemic with changes in negative sentiment on social media platforms. In this work we combine and enhance publicly available resources with our own manually annotated set of tweets to create machine learning classification models to characterize the sinophobic behavior. We then applied our classifier to a pre-filtered longitudinal dataset spanning two years of pandemic related tweets and overlay our findings with relevant news events.</p>

Characterization of different surface materials and their antifouling activity

<p>The long-term performance of five surface materials - glass, perspex, polystyrene, epoxy-coated glass, and a silicone hydrogel coating - in inhibiting biofilm formation by cyanobacteria was evaluated concerning biofilm cell number, wet weight, chlorophyll a content, and biofilm thickness. In order to obtain more insight into the effect of surface properties on biofilm formation, they were characterized concerning their hydrophobicity and roughness.</p>

Building and characterizing a fluorescence setup to measure very low concentrations of analytes/biomarkers

<p>This training report is the result of my internship in the B-Phot Brussels Photonics team of the VUB<br> that took place between February 3 and April 3, 2020. The project of this internship nds its context<br> in the European SensApp project which regroups several European research institutes and universities,<br> including the VUB. The goal of this project is to develop a method to diagnose the Alzheimer&#39;s disease<br> in a faster and non-invasive manner, simply through a blood test, which is currently not possible because<br> the concentration of biomarkers of the Alzheimer&#39;s disease in the blood is too low. During this internship,<br> I was lead to build, align and calibrate a uorescence detection setup. Using this setup, I made mea-<br> surements of the uorescence intensity of low concentrations of dye solutions. From those measurements,<br> I performed calculations of the signal to noise ratio in order to determine the limit of detection of the<br> setup. Finally, I studied the kinetics of photobleaching in order to get to a better understanding of its<br> impact on the measurements.</p>

Dataset for a physical model characterizing visualization of the cervix during pelvic exams

<p>This dataset accompanies our manuscript draft: <em>A physical model for improving visualization of the cervix &nbsp;during pelvic exams: A steppingstone towards reducing &nbsp;disparities in women&#39;s health</em>.</p> <p><strong>Manuscript Draft Abstract</strong></p> <p>Pelvic exams are frequently complicated by collapse of the lateral vaginal walls, obstructing the physician&rsquo;s view of the cervix. A commonly utilized method in the clinical setting, passed down from mentors to trainees, is repurposing either a condom or a glove as a sheath placed over the speculum blades to retract the lateral vaginal walls during the exam. Despite their regular use in clinical practice, little research has been done comparing the relative efficacy of these methods. Better visualization of the cervix can benefit patients by decreasing examination-related discomfort, aiding in cancer screening, and preventing the need to move the examination to the operating room under general anesthesia.</p> <p>This study presents a physical model that simulates vaginal pressure being exerted around a speculum. Using it, we then compare the efficacy of different condom types, glove materials, glove sizes, and methods of application onto the speculum.</p> <p>The results showed that condoms provided minimal lateral wall retraction, while vinyl-material gloves with the speculum placed into the third finger had the best lateral wall retraction. However, the nitrile-material gloves are overall preferred over the vinyl gloves as they provided adequate lateral wall retraction without applying a significant vertical compressive effect on the speculum, and thus had overall better cervical visualization. Glove size had minimal impact.</p> <p>This study serves as a guide for clinicians as they use tools commonly found in a clinical setting to perform difficult pelvic exams. We recommend that clinicians consider the use of a nitrile glove as a sheath around a speculum. Additionally, this study demonstrates proof-of-concept of a physical model that can quantitatively describe different materials on their ability to improve cervical visualization. This model can be used in future research with more speculum and material combinations, including with materials custom-designed materials for this purpose.</p>

Stability characterization of microfluidic lipid-stabilized double emulsions under physiologically-relevant conditions

<p>Double emulsions (DEs) are water-in-oil-in-water (or oil-in-water-in-oil) droplets with the potential to deliver combinatory therapies due to their ability to co-localize hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules in the same carrier. However, DEs are thermodynamically unstable and only kinetically trapped. Extending this transitory state, rendering DEs more stable, would widen the possibilities of real-world applications, yet characterization of their stability in physiologically-relevant conditions is lacking. In this work, we used microfluidics to produce lipid-stabilized DEs with reproducible monodispersity and high encapsulation efficiency. We investigated DE stability under a range of physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, pH and mechanical stimulus. Stability through time was inversely proportional to temperature. DEs were significantly stable up to 8 days at 4 oC, 5 days at RT and 2 days at 37 oC. When encapsulating a cargo, DE stability decreased significantly. When exposed to a pH change, unloaded DEs were only significantly unstable at the extremes (pH 1 and 13), largely outside physiological ranges. When exposed to flow, unloaded DEs behaved similarly regardless of the mechanical stimulus applied, with approximately 70% remaining after 100 flow cycles of 10s. These results indicate that lipid-stabilized DEs produced via microfluidics could be tailored to endure physiologically-relevant conditions and act as carriers for drug delivery. Special attention should be given to the composition of the solutions, e.g. osmolarity ratio between inner and outer solutions, and the interaction of the molecules, e.g. carrier and cargo, involved in the final formulation.</p>

Optical tweezer platform for the characterization of pH-triggered colloidal transformations in the oleic acid/water system

<p>Hypothesis: Soft colloidal particles that respond to their environment have innovative potential for many fields ranging from food and health to biotechnology and oil recovery. The in situ characterisation of colloidal transformations that triggers the functional response remain a challenge.</p> <p>Experiments: This study demonstrates the combination of an optical&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/micromanipulation">micromanipulation</a>&nbsp;platform, polarized optical video microscopy and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/microfluidics">microfluidics</a>&nbsp;in a comprehensive approach for the analysis of pH-driven structural transformations in emulsions. The new platform, together with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/synchrotron">synchrotron</a>&nbsp;small angle X-ray scattering, was then applied to research the food-relevant, pH-responsive,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/oleic-acid">oleic acid</a>&nbsp;in water system.</p> <p>Findings: The experiments demonstrate structural transformations in individual oleic acid particles from micron-sized onion-type multilamellar oleic acid vesicles at pH 8.6, to nanostructured emulsions at pH &lt; 8.0, and eventually oil droplets at pH &lt; 6.5. The smooth particle-water interface of the onion-type vesicles at pH 8.6 was transformed into a rough particle surface at pH below 7.5. The pH-triggered changes of the interfacial tension at the droplet-water interface together with mass transport owing to structural transformations induced a self-propelled motion of the particle. The results of this study contribute to the fundamental understanding of the structure&ndash;property relationship in pH-responsive emulsions for nutrient and drug delivery applications.</p>

<p>A dataset for the publication:&nbsp;T. Puttonen, M. Salmi, J. Partanen, Mechanical Properties and Fracture Characterization of Additive Manufacturing Polyamide 12 After Accelerated Weathering, 2021.</p> <p>The paper studies the mechanical properties and fracture mechanics of Additive Manufacturing (AM) polyamide 12 (PA12) in two build orientations exposed to a 1500-hour accelerated weathering cycle (ISO-4982-3) followed by tensile testing (ISO-527). Fracture surfaces of X and Z build orientation AM PA12 and X build orientation AM glass-filled PA12 were studied with scanning electron microscopy. The tested AM materials were PA12, glass-filled PA12, and carbon-reinforced PA12. Experimental characterization of transversal-heterogeneous clay mixtures by the spectral induced polarization method

<p>In this folder you will find multiple datasets (*.txt) from SIP measurements of transversal-heterogeneous clay mixtures using spectral induced polarization acquired between April and May 2022. Additionally, we include two python codes to read and process the data.</p> <p>SIP_Plot_ReWrite.py is a python program aimed to process a .res file from a SIP Fuchs III.<br> It gives a .txt file with the frequency, the resistivity, the phase and the associated errors.<br> In order for the program to give the resistivity, you will need to enter the geometric factor of the studied sample.</p> <p><br> The six text files in the folder (excluding README.txt) were created using SIP_Plot_ReWrite.py.</p> <p>IL_1by1.txt and IL_1by1_V2.txt are from two different homogeneous mixtures of illite and water with a concentration of initially 0.01 mol/L of NaCl.<br> MtR_1by1.txt is from a homogeneous mixture of red montmorillonite and water with a concentration of initially 0.01 mol/L of NaCl.</p> <p>IL_MtR_1by2.txt, IL_MtR_1by4.txt and IL_MtR_1by8.txt are from three transversal-heterogeneous mixtures of illite and red montmorillonite with water containing a concentration of initially 0.01 mol/L of NaCl.</p> <p><br> For IL_MtR_1by2.txt, there was one portion of each clay types, occupying a half of the cylindrical container each.</p> <p><br> For IL_MtR_1by4.txt, there was two portions of each clay types, occupying a quarter of the cylindrical container each.</p> <p><br> These two samples were made using the same mixtures as for IL_1by1.txt and MtR_1by1.txt.</p> <p><br> For IL_MtR_1by8.txt, there was four portions of each clay types, occupying an eighth of the cylindrical container each.<br> This sample was made using the same mixtures as for IL_1by1_V2.txt and MtR_1by1.txt.</p> <p><br> TestDoubleColeColeFit.py is a python program which optimizes a double Cole-Cole model by multiplication on SIP data.<br> This program needs a file with the same structure as the .txt file made by SIP_Plot_ReWrite.py.</p>

<p><strong>Characterization of the polyspecific transferase of murine type I fatty acid synthase (FAS) and implications for polyketide synthase (PKS) engineering</strong></p> <p><a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acschembio.7b00718">https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acschembio.7b00718</a></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Fatty acid synthases (FASs) and polyketide synthases (PKSs) condense acyl compounds to fatty acids and polyketides, respectively. Both, FASs and PKSs, harbor acyltransferases (ATs), which select substrates for condensation by &beta;-ketoacyl synthases (KSs). Here, we present the structural and functional characterization of the polyspecific malonyl/acetyltransferase (MAT) of murine FAS. We assign kinetic constants for the transacylation of the native substrates, acetyl- and malonyl-CoA, and demonstrate the promiscuity of FAS to accept structurally and chemically diverse CoA-esters. X-ray structural data of the KS-MAT didomain in a malonyl-loaded state suggests a MAT-specific role of an active site arginine in transacylation. Owing to its enzymatic properties and its accessibility as a separate domain, MAT of murine FAS may serve as versatile tool for engineering PKSs to provide custom-tailored access to new polyketides that can be applied in antibiotic and antineoplastic therapy.</p> <p><strong>Raw dataset for protein databank accession code (PDB) 5my0</strong></p> <p><a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.2210/pdb5my0/pdb">http://dx.doi.org/10.2210/pdb5my0/pdb</a></p>
