Neural mechanism of experience-dependent sensory gain control in c. elegans

<p>Animals' sensory systems adjust their responsiveness to environmental stimuli that vary greatly in their intensity. Here we report the neural mechanism of experience-dependent sensory adjustment, especially gain control, in the ASH nociceptive neurons in Caenorhabditis elegans. Using calcium imaging under gradual changes in stimulus intensity, we find that the ASH neurons of naive animals respond to concentration increases in a repulsive odor 2-nonanone regardless of the magnitude of the concentration increase. However, after preexposure to the odor, the ASH neurons exhibit significantly weak responses to a small gradual increase in odor concentration while their responses to a large gradual increase remain strong. Thus, preexposure changes the slope of stimulus-response relationships (i.e., gain control). Behavioral analysis suggests that this gain control contributes to the preexposure-dependent enhancement of odor avoidance behavior. Mathematical analysis reveals that the ASH response consists of fast and slow components, and that the fast component is specifically suppressed by preexposure for the gain control. In addition, genetic analysis suggests that G protein signaling is required for the fast component. Thus, our integrative study demonstrates how prior experience dynamically modulates stimulus-response relationships in sensory neurons, eventually leading to adaptive modulation of behavior.</p>

SatTerm experience: vocabulary control and facet analysis help improve the software requirement solicitation process

<p>One of the most difficult steps in the software development process is moving from&nbsp;requirements written in natural, uncontrolled language, to the formalisms required by the design&nbsp;modelling languages. To solve this issue, practitioners should pay attention to the possibility of&nbsp;applying vocabulary control and knowledge representation techniques to produce better&nbsp;specifications. The use of controlled vocabularies and the modelling of the conceptual relationships&nbsp;between concepts in a specific domain are expected to improve the quality of the specifications.<br> Vocabulary control and semantic modelling are promising tools to avoid the most frequent problems&nbsp;in the requirements specification process: lack of consistency and ambiguity.&nbsp;This paper provides a detailed description of the development process of an ontology used for&nbsp;requirements modelling in the area of satellite control systems. The process applied is based on well-established practices and guidelines applied for the construction of controlled vocabularies and&nbsp;faceted classifications schemas. Engineers can use the ontology when writing system specifications&nbsp;using predefined templates. The use of this ontology ensures the consistency of the specifications&nbsp;written by different engineers improves the communication with other parties involved in the system&nbsp;construction activities and sets the foundations for a semi-automated generation of models for&nbsp;subsequent design activities.</p>

Controlled Experiment in Crosscutting Concerns Identification from Software Requirements Specification

<p>The concern is a group of requirements with the same purpose, which are known as crosscutting concerns when they are scattered and tangled in the system. Identifying and separating these concerns is a matter of huge importance to software maintainability and evolution. For this, some approaches are proposed. There are few experimental studies comparing and analyzing these approaches in detail. In this paper, our aim is to provide empirical evidence about two approaches in this context. We conducted a controlled experiment to compare the effectiveness of two approaches, which identify crosscutting concerns in the requirements specification, followed by an assessment of its perceived utility and ease of use. Our results indicate that, in this given context and planned scenario, there are significant differences between the effectiveness of ObasCId and Theme/Doc approaches.</p>

Data from: Windows of opportunity for germination of riparian species after restoring water level fluctuations: a field experiment with controlled seed banks

1. Restoration activities aiming at increasing vegetation diversity often try to stimulate both dispersal and germination. In wetlands, dispersal and germination are coupled as water and water level fluctuations (WLF) simultaneously influence seed transport and germination conditions (soil moisture). Water regime shifts have been shown to affect vegetation composition. However, the interactions between WLF, dispersal and subsequent germination as drivers of such changes are still poorly understood, especially within the complexity of a field situation. 2. We tested the effect of soil moisture on ten riparian species in the greenhouse and sowed these species on 135 field locations in nine wetlands with recently restored WLF. We used quantile regressions to test the effects of WLF on the window of opportunity for germination from sown seeds and other seeds naturally dispersed to our plots, as well as on community diversity. 3. Soil moisture significantly affected germination both in the greenhouse and in the field. In the complexity of a field situation, a flooding depth just below the soil level, an intermediate flooding duration and a high flooding frequency provided the best opportunities for maximal germination. This was because these conditions enhanced germination from the seed bank as well as increasing germination from dispersed seeds. Seedling diversity showed identical patterns. 4. Other known (i.e., light conditions) and unknown factors played a role as we found low and variable germination, even under optimal conditions. We found evidence that WLF can affect vegetation zonation as flooded seedling communities contained more species with high moisture affinity. 5. Synthesis and applications. Water level fluctuations provide clear windows of opportunity for germination both from the seed bank and from dispersed seeds. Water regime changes are therefore likely to strongly affect recruitment opportunities and subsequent community assembly in riparian ecosystems, for instance through climate change or management. Water level fluctuations can be used as management tool to stimulate plant recruitment and seedling diversity in riparian wetlands.

Suplemental data for material radiopurity control in the XENONnT experiment

<p>The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of the utmost importance for rare-event searches and thus critical to the XENONnT experiment. Results of an extensive radioassay program are reported, in which material samples have been screened with gamma-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Several live years of data, aggregated across all instruments, were acquired throughout the radioassay program of XENONnT. Relevant measurements for detector construction are covered in the manuscript &#39;<strong>Material radiopurity control in the XENONnT experiment</strong>&#39; (<em>arxiv:2112.05629v1</em>) . Supplemental data is available in here.</p> <p><strong>NOTE:</strong> Current screening results are only preliminary, and contain a small set of the overall screened dataset.</p>
