Data and code for "Decoding the chaffinch "rain" call: a specialized alarm signal for nest predation"
<p>Summary of the project : <br>The chaffinch *Fringilla coelebs* is a very common passerine in Europe. One of the chaffinche's vocalisations, called "rain-call", is very common and conspicuous, however, it's function is still not well understood. Three hypotheses have been postulated as to what chaffinches rain-call are for: (1) the rain-call could be used in territorial context by males as a substitute for the song when the bird is in stressful conditions, (2) the rain-call is an alarm call, and (3) the rain-call is a mate-directed signal for communication within the pair. We tested these three hypotheses using two playbacks and behavioural observations in the wild. <br>- In the first playback, we broadcasted rain-calls, chaffinch songs and the song of balckbirds as a control. We measured if chaffinch males reacted to rain-calls similarely to a simulated territorial intrusion. <br>- In the second playback, we simulated the presence of predators (hawk and crows, compared to a balckbird's song as a control) and observed if chaffinches started rain-calling. <br>- Third, we closely followed five chaffinch males in the field, and took good note of the social and environemental context of rain-calling behaviour. <br>We find that chaffinches did not react to rain-calls with the same agresive response than to territorial intrusion, wich does not support the hypothesis of a song substitute. We found that chaffinches started rain-calling consistently when we broadcasted predator calls, as well as when we saw real predators, which supports teh alarm call hypothesis. Finaly, we found that male chaffinches reain-called much more often when a femal chaffinch was around, which might hint that females are intended recievers of the rain-call alarm. <br>We provide here the complete dataset for all thre experiment as well as the R code used to run statistical analyses. Variables and software versions are described further.</p>

Data from: Nonlinear decoding models enable music reconstruction from human auditory cortex activity
<p>This dataset is associated with the manuscript "Nonlinear decoding models enable music reconstruction from human auditory cortex activity", and provides all preprocessed files necessary to replicate the results.</p> <p>In this study, we recorded intracranial EEG data (specifically, ECoG) in 29 patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy while they were passively listening to a Pink Floyd song.</p> <p>The present dataset consists of preprocessed neural activity (High-Frequency Activity, 70-150 Hz), electrode coordinates (in MNI template space) and auditory stimulus (raw wave file, and 32- and 128-frequency-bin auditory spectrogram). HFA and both auditory spectrograms have a sampling rate of 100 Hz, and are temporally aligned (duration of 190.72 s).</p> <p>The code we used to preprocess and analyze the data is hosted on GitHub, <a href="https://github.com/ludovicbellier/PF_HFAdecoding">here</a> for the manuscript and <a href="https://github.com/ludovicbellier/PF_HFAdecoding">there</a> for the predictive modeling functions.</p>
Data from: Decoding the drivers of deep-time wetland biodiversity: insights from an early Permian tropical lake ecosystem
<p><span>Wetlands are important to continental evolution, providing both the arenas and refugia for emerging and declining biotas, respectively. </span><span>Based on this significance and the high preservation potential, the resulting fossiliferous deposits play a key role in understanding past and future biodiversity. We reconstruct the trophic structure and age of the early Permian Manebach-Lake ecosystem, Germany, thriving in a wetland when the tropical biosphere faced profound upheaval in the peaking Late Palaeozoic Icehouse. Nine excavations, the high-resolution, spatiotemporal documentation of fossils and sediments, and the U-Pb radioisotopic dating of tuffs allow us to distinguish autogenic and allogenic factors that shaped the limnic biocoenosis. The Manebach Lake was an exorheic, stratified, perennial water body in the 10<sup>1</sup>–10<sup>2</sup> km<sup>2</sup> scale, integrated into the catchment draining much of the European Variscides. Lake formation paralleled an Asselian regional wet climatic interval and benefited from rising groundwater tables due to post-Variscan tectonics. Stromatolite-forming cyanobacteria, bivalves, several crustacean groups, amblypterids resembling <em>Paramblypterus duvernoyi</em> and xenacanthid sharks formed a differentiated biocoenosis. Digestive remains prove the rare presence of acanthodians, branchiosaurs, and large tetrapods. Anoxic events affected the mainly epilimnal community. The results indicate woody-debris-bearing lake littorals devoid of semi-aquatic and aquatic plants as places suitable for large stromatolites to grow, underpin the model of declining freshwater shark diversity in most Permian Variscan basins, demonstrate fish/amphibian ratios in limnic taphocoenoses to measure lake perenniality and reveal taphonomic biases in freshwater plant assemblages. Our outcomes highlight the need for more knowledge about the diversity, ecology, and fossilisation pathways of past limnic biotas, particularly microorganisms and actinopterygian fishes, to reconstruct deep-time continental ecosystems. </span></p>
