December 2003 CTD, PAR, oxygen and chlorophyll profiles for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Altamaha River transect
Four hydrographic surveys were performed on December 2, 2003, along an east-to-west transect up the Altamaha River in Georgia (Altamaha River Transect, GCE-AL). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at 2km intervals from the -4km to 24km upriver along the transect during low and high tidal regimes. Conductivity, temperature, pressure, optical back scatter, photosynthetically-available radiation, oxygen and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected during the upcast were deleted. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.
December 2003 bin-averaged CTD profiles for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Intracoastal Waterway transect
Two hydrographic surveys were performed from December 2 to December 3, 2003, along the Intracoastal Waterway between the Altamaha River south of Wolf Island and Sapelo Sound (Intracoastal Waterway Transect, GCE-IC). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at various intervals from -17km to 26km along the transect during flood and ebb tidal regimes. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.

December 2003 surface water phytoplankton productivity for 10 Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle or by hand from just beneath the surface during low tide surveys at or near 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites in December 2003. The incorporation of radiolabelled bicarbonate in response to varying levels of illumination was measured using a photosynthetron apparatus. Photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves constructed from these measurements will be used in conjunction with algal biomass and PAR versus depth measurements to estimate instantaneous gross primary production in the water at each GCE sampling site. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
December 2003 surface water dissolved organic carbon concentrations at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle from just beneath the surface during tidal surveys at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites in December 2003. Water samples were immediately filtered through ashed Whatman GF/F filters and three replicate samples were acidified, refrigerated and transported to the laboratory for analysis. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were measured in each sample by high temperature combustion and chromatographic analysis using a Shimadzu TOC analyzer. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
December 2003 surface water bacterial abundance at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Surface water samples were collected during low tide surveys near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in December, 2003. Unfiltered subsamples were immediately preserved with buffered formalin and refrigerated for transport to the laboratory. The abundance of bacteria in each sample was determined using an epifluorescence microscope by counting DAPI-stained cells retained on a 0.2µm polycarbonate filter. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
December 2003 surface water bacterial productivity at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Surface water samples were collected during low tide survays near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in December, 2003. The incorporation of tritiated leucine in unfiltered samples during one hour incubations was measured using a standard microcentrifuge method to estimate bacterial productivity in each sample. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
Surface water DIC, total alkalinity, and pH for the September 2002 through December 2004 Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER oceanographic surveys
Surface water samples for total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TAlk), and pH were collected from the Altamaha River, Doboy Sound, Sapelo River and the Duplin River (anchor station near Marsh Landing) during the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER oceanographic surveys from September 2002 through December 2004. DIC was measured using a custom automated DIC analyzer. Total alkalinity was determined by Gran titration. pH of surface water at stations was measured on board using a glass electrode. This study was part of the GCE oceanographic monitoring program, and will be repeated periodically.
Study of Salt Marsh Consumer Diversity and Ecosystem Function on Sapelo Island, Georgia, from May-December 2011
This dataset contains the results of a field study investigating the effect of salt marsh consumer diversity on ecosystem functioning. Our field studies reveal that a diverse consumer assemblage significantly enhances simultaneous functioning of disparate ecosystem processes (i.e., productivity, decomposition, and infiltration). Extreme functional and phylogenetic differences among consumers underlie this relationship. Each marsh consumer affected at least one different ecosystem function and each individual function was affected by more than two consumers.
Rates of consumption of marsh periwinkles (Littoraria irrorata) by mud crabs (Eurytium limosum and Panopeus obesus) between August and December in a Georgia salt marsh
Predatory mud crabs (Panopeus obesus and Eurytium limosum) are two of the main resident infaunal predators in southeastern US salt marshes. The relative importance of the two species in the trophic control of marsh periwinkles (snails; Littoraria irrorata) is likley to change across seasons. We therefore manipulated the these predator species (Panopeus obesus and Eurytium limosum) in experimental cages in the field (at Dean Creek, Sapelo Island, GA) and assessed monthly predation rates over four months, between 15th August to 15th December. We included 3 treatments, consisting of two treatments containing each species alone, and one containing both species together; all treatments had the same density. Specifically, 1) 4 x Panopeus individuals; 2) 4 x Eurytium individuals; 3) 2 x Panopeus individuals + 2 Eurytium individuals. Only adult crabs (33-40mm carapace diameter) were used. We maintained the treatments over 4 months (15th Aug - 15th Dec 2009), replacing any missing crabs every two weeks and counting the number of snails killed by predators each month.
Forest survey of species richness and basal area for two tidal forest plots at GCE 11 on the Altamaha River in Southeast Georgia in December 2013
We established two 0.1-ha plots in the Site 11 tidal forest in December 2013 to monitor forest composition. In each plot, we identified the species and measured DBH (diameter at breast height) of every tree using standard diameter tapes. We also used the DBH measurements to calculate the basal area of each tree.
Soil accretion at 10 GCE marsh sampling sites from December 2011 to December 2016
The accretion of soil was measured in tidal marshes at 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites from December 2011 to May 2016 Feldspar marker layers were deposited in 0.25m by 0.25m quadrats in the marsh plain at each site in December 2011, then replicate soil cores were removed at approximately 6 month intervals to measure accretion above the marker layer. Due to bioturbation disturbing the sediments, Feldspar was re-deposited after cores were taken approximately every 6 months. This study is part of the GCE sediment monitoring program, and was conducted to evaluate the effects of freshwater input on soil accretion.
