A digital archive of human activity in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica from 1902 to present
Over the last half century, the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) of East Antarctica have become a globally important site for scientific research and environmental monitoring. Historical data can make important contributions to current research activities and environmental management in Antarctica, but tend to be widely scattered and difficult to access. We address this need in the MDV by compiling over 5,000 historical photographs, sketches, maps, oral interviews, publications, and other archival resources into an online digital archive. The data have been digitized and georeferenced using a standardized metadata structure, which enables intuitive searches and data discovery via an online interface. The ultimate aim of the archive is to create as comprehensive as possible a record of human activity in the MDV to support ongoing research, management, and conservation efforts. This is a valuable tool for scientists seeking to understand the dynamics of change in lakes, glaciers, and other physical systems, as well as humanistic inquire into the history of the Southern continent. In addition to providing benchmarks for understanding change over time, the data can help target field sampling for studies working under the assumption of a pristine landscape by enabling researchers to identify the date and extent of past human activities. Maximizing human effort for analyzing scientific images: a case study using digitized herbarium sheets

<p>This webinar was funded by the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, thanks to the “Simon Barton Postgraduate & ECR Conference Prize 2020” awarded to Nerea Fernández Cadenas (https://www.societymedievalmediterranean.com/simon-barton-postgraduate-conference-prize)<br> It has been designed to offer a forum in which scholars can debate and share their experiences about the difficulties and advantages of researching and teaching through Digital Humanities when exploring Medieval Mediterranean History.</p> <p>Moderated by Nerea Fernández Cadenas , speakers were:<br> <strong>Dr David Natal Villazala: </strong>Lecturer in History at Royal Holloway. His research has focused on the social history of late antiquity, with special attention to the western, Latin-speaking part of the Roman Empire. Related to this subject is his monograph: Fugiamus ergo forum’. Ascetismo y poder en Ambrosio de Milán with University of León in 2010. His current project analyses how a ‘universal’ late antique Church was constructed despite the end of the Western Roman Empire through GIS software. This project is funded by the ERC-Starting Grant scheme (€1,465,316) and hosted at Royal Holloway, University of London and at the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities (Vienna).<br> <strong>Dr Antonio Blanco González</strong>: PhD viva 2009, held academic positions at the universities of Durham (UK) as a EU-funded Marie Sklodowska Curie fellow and Valladolid (Spain) as a Juan de la Cierva post-doctoral scholar. He nowadays works as a lecturer with the University of Salamanca (Spain). His interests include social and landscape archaeology and has published widely on these topics in top-ranked international journals.<br> <strong>Dr Evina Steinová:</strong> Postdoctoral researcher at the Huygens ING, an institute of the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in Amsterdam. She is the principal investigator of a three-year VENI project Innovating Knowledge dealing with the early medieval manuscripts of the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville, the innovations found in these manuscripts, and the intellectual networks that served as channels for the spreading of these innovations. Her PhD research focused on annotation symbols used in Western manuscripts in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. She published a monograph on this subject, Notam supere studui: The Use of Annotation Symbols in the Early Middle Ages, with Brepols in 2019.<br> This webinar was recorded on 29/09/20.</p>

InHARD-DT - Industrial Human Action Recognition Dataset - Digital Twin
<p>This paper explores the use of a Digital Twin of a real industrial workstation involving assembly tasks with a robotic arm interfaced with Virtual Reality (VR) to extract a digital human model. The DT simulates assembly operations performed by humans aiming to generate self-labeled data. Thereby, a Human Action Recognition dataset named InHARD-DT was created to validate a real use case in which we use the acquired auto-labeled DT data of the virtual representation of the InHARD dataset to train a Spatial–Temporal Graph Convolutional Neural Network with skeletal data on one hand. On the other hand, the Physical Twin (PT) data of the InHARD dataset was used for testing. Therefore, we introduce a RGB+S dataset named “Industrial Human Action Recognition Dataset - Digital Twin” (InHARD-DT) from a real-world setting for industrial human action recognition. </p> <p>We invited 12 distinct subjects from the LINEACT laboratory (4 females and 8 males) for the DT data collection to perform the same assembly tasks of the InHARD dataset (link below) in Virtual Reality via a VR application of an industrial real workstation. This dataset contains 13 different industrial action classes and over 4800 action samples. The introduction of this dataset should allow us the study and development of various learning techniques for the task of human actions analysis inside industrial environments involving human robot collaborations. It can be used also in cross-validation scenarios where the training phase can be done using the Physical Twin (PT) data of the InHARD dataset (real world scenarios) and then test using Digital Twin (DT) data of the InHARD-DT dataset which is the main objective of this paper. </p>
