Level of play and coach-rated game intelligence are related to performance on design fluency in elite soccer players
<p>Executive brain functions are innate mechanisms for regulating behavior. While the impact of suboptimal executive functions has been characterized in patients, their contribution to individual success has not been elucidated. We set out to understand how executive functions relate to successful human behavior by examining their relation to game intelligence in sport - the ability to read a game and quickly adapt the behavior. In elite soccer players (n = 51), those playing in national teams (national team players) significantly outperformed those only playing at premier league level (premier league players) in Design Fluency (DF), a complex visuo-spatial executive function test that includes measures of creativity and cognitive flexibility. Their result showed a moderate correlation with coach rated game intelligence, also when correcting for low level cognitive capacity and was most evident when considering cognitive flexibility. DF capacity also correlated with number of assists made during the season but not with number of made goals during the same period, linking the fast planning of several steps in DF to fast planning of several steps in the soccer game. Altogether, our data suggests that DF capacity relates to success in soccer both on a subjective and on an objective level.</p>
The brains of elite soccer players are subject to experience-dependent alterations in white matter connectivity
<p>Soccer is the only major sport with voluntary unprotected head-to-ball contact. It is crucial to determine if head impact through regular soccer sports training is manifested in brain structure and connectivity, and whether such alterations are due to sustained training per se. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we documented a comprehensive view of soccer players' brains in a sample of twenty-five right-handed male elite soccer players aged from 18 to 22 years and twenty-five non-athletic controls aged 19 to 24 years. Importantly, none had recalled a history of concussion. We performed a whole-brain tract-based spatial statistical analysis, and a tract-specific probabilistic tractography method to measure differences of white matter properties between groups. Whole-brain integrity analysis showed increased microstructural integrity within the corpus callosum tract in soccer players compared to controls. Further, tract-specific probabilistic tractography revealed that the anterior part of corpus callosum may be the brain structure most relevant to training experience, which may put into perspective prior evidence showing corpus callosum alteration in retired or concussed athletes practicing contact sports. Intriguingly, experience-related alterations showed left hemispheric lateralization of potential early signs of concussion-like effects. This is the first study to-date providing a definitive characterization of soccer-specific experience-related structural alterations. In sum, we concluded that the observed gains and losses may be due to a consequence of engagement in protracted soccer training that incurs prognostic hallmarks associated with minor injury-induced neural inflammation. <p>The <strong>E</strong>ssential therma<strong>L</strong> <strong>I</strong>nfrared remo<strong>T</strong>e s<strong>E</strong>nsing (<strong>ELITE</strong>) product suite currently has four types of products, including land surface temperature (LST: clear-sky and all-sky), emissivity (NBE: narrowband emissivity; BBE: broadband emissivity; and spectral emissivity), the component of surface radiation and energy budget (SLUR: surface longwave upwelling radiation; SLDR: surface longwave downward radiation SLDR; SLNR: surface longwave net radiation), and the component of Earth's radiation budget (OLR; outgoing longwave radiation; RSR: reflected solar radiation). The spatial-temporal resolutions of the ELITE products are mainly determined by the employed satellite data sources. For more information about ELITE products, please refer to the website (<a href="https://elite.bnu.edu.cn">https://elite.bnu.edu.cn</a>).</p> <p>This dataset is the ELITE hourly seamless 4 km LST dataset covering the FY-4A/AGRI nominal fixed disc (80.6°N-80.6°S, 24.1°E-174.7°W). First, an improved temperature and emissivity separation algorithm was used to obtain the clear-sky LST. Then, under the framework of the SEB theory, a unique way was proposed to solve the temperature difference between the cloudy-sky LST and hypothetical clear-sky LST caused by cloud radiative effects. The in situ validation results show that the bias (RMSE) of the AGRI hourly seamless LST is 0.02 K (2.84 K). The temporal resolution and spatial resolution of this dataset are 1 hour and 4 km, respectively.</p> <p>This is the ELITE FY-4A/AGRI seamless LST product in 2023. Firstly, the iTES algorithm is employed to retrieve the Himawari-8/AHI LST. Secondly, the CLDAS LST is corrected to eliminate its system deviation. Finally, the multi-scale Kalman filter is employed to fuse Himawari-8/AHI LST and the bias-corrected CLDAS LST to generate 0.02 ° hourly seamless LST. The in situ validation results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the seamless LST is about 3k. The temporal resolution and spatial resolution of this dataset are 1 hour and 0.02°, respectively.</p> <p>This is the seamless LST dataset in 2022.7-2022.12.
