15th C. Ship Graffiti, Calatrava la Vieja, Esp
Medieval graffiti from Calatrava la Vieja, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Late medieval Christian period (3rd quarter 15th century CE). Located in the crypt of the Santa María La Blanca Church, inside the alcazar. The main motif is a "coca" from the later 15th C, a merchant ship etched with precision and detail, probably by a sailor who knew this type of ship well, and with this act requested the protection of the virgin, as a votive graffiti. It is an interesting drawing because it depicts the complete rigging, including the crow´s nests, the bow castle, the stern fortress, and the "codaste" rudder-an element of great importance in the history of navigation, given that its use after 1425 allowed navigation on the high seas, and gave way to the Age of Discovery. Horsemen Graffiti Haddington Church
Graffiti on two men on horses on stone work on south wall of St Mary's Parish Church, Haddington. There are also marks from musket balls probably made during the siege of Haddington in 1548. 'The eighteen month occupation of Haddington 1548–1549 is said to be Scotland's longest siege. French, German and Scottish armies battered the defences of the burgh town trying to dislodge a stubborn and forlorn English garrison. In September 1549, the English relief column arrived unopposed and extricated the remaining plague-ridden defenders, leaving the fortifications to be levelled by the besiegers.' Graffiti Rueiro de Figueiriñas
Where are the boundaries between what it's and what is not archaeology? Every set of material culture is suitable of archaeological study. That's the case of this okupa (squatter) house in Santiago de Compostela. Surveying the yard, we found that the squatters had orchards and a gathering place around a fire, with some chairs. They also barricade the back entrance. Power is not just manifested in terms of violence (Clastres 2016), wherever is power, there is resistance or multiplicity of resistances (Miller & Tilley 1984). Resistance doesnt mean direct clash, there are tinny actions, strategies, which could difficult the work of a domination system (Ruibal & Ayan 2018). Squatterization is one example of this, because the people involved denies statehood, tributary system, aceptance of property, etc. Materially this could be seen in a reformulation of the spaces, reuse of objects of different chronology and the symbolism of the fachade art. The model shows some of the graffiti preserved in the prison of the town of Picón (Ciudad Real, Spain). The jail of Picón had two cells located on the ground floor of the City Hall. Its construction dates from the sixteenth century and is one of the few examples that are preserved in La Mancha. On its walls the prisoners recorded numerous graffiti among which we can see deer, crosses, buildings, hearts ... It was in use until the nineteenth century, at which time the Spanish judicial and prison system changed. 3D model made using 266 images in Reality Capture. Paris catacombs - Graffitis in the German bunker
Evidence of the German occupation is visible beneath the streets of Paris. After WWI, bunkers and shelters began to be prepared throughout Paris to protect the population against bombs and gas attacks of a future war. Three of those shelters still exist in the catacombs, one of which is the bomb-proof bunker beneath the Montaigne high school, requisitioned in WWII by the Luftwaffe as their command post. It's a large room with interesing murals as well as some german signs painted (arrows to avoid being lost) or "Rauchen Verboten" and "Ruhe" (i.e. "Smoking prohibited" and "Silence"). Electric wires and the remains of a chemical toilet are still here. This wall has a German flag painted with a white pattern over it (not sure about the meaning of it). Scanned with the iPhone12 Pro and Scaniverse. Paris catacombs - "Frotte Connard" graffiti
The Paris catacombs are filled with graffitis. Some are true pieces of art, but others are just garbage (unfortunately). There's a story behind these two letters. A few *cataphiles* and officials are regularly cleaning some grafitis (especially in the most beautiful rooms like the *Fontaine des Chartreux*). Other groups are mocking them by tagging "FC", meaning "Frotte, Connard" or "Scrub, you dumbass". Scanned with the iPhone12 Pro and Scaniverse.
