Bioenergy and Land Use Survey at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (2012 to 2012)
Dataset Abstract The goal of this mail survey was to explore landowners’ attitudes, perceptions, and willingness to grow energy crops on marginal land in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. A major objective was to predict the potential supply of four potential bioenergy crops on three land types (cropland, hay & pasture land, farmable non-crop land), with special focus on the latter two categories of “marginal” land. The contingent valuation completely randomized experimental design covers four energy crops (corn, switchgrass, hybrid poplar, trees, mixed prairie) with four pre-defined rental rate offers ($50, $100, $200, $300 per acre) at one of two rental contract durations (5 or 10 years) for a total of 32 versions of the questionnaire. The area frame sample targeted owners of plots of 10 acres (4 hectares) or more of “marginal” land, using the USDA Cropland Data Layer 2010 where “marginal land” was defined as fallow cropland, shrubland, grassland, and hay or pasture. The two-stage clustered random sampling design began with random selection of 12 selected non-metropolitan counties in southern Michigan (the clusters) and within each one random selection of 100 owners of land parcels of at least 10 acres (4 ha.), where possible. The 4-wave direct mail survey asked landowners about their land uses, attitudes about their land, awareness of bioenergy crops, opinions about bioenergy and environment, concerns about land rental, and demographic background. The contingent valuation section asked for respondent willingness to rent each of the three land types for each of the four bioenergy crops at a specified rental rate for a specified contract period. Dataset Abstract A compilation of data from John Hoben’s thesis work. Six rates of nitrogen fertilizer (0-225 kg N ha-1) were broadcast and incorporated prior to planting on commercially farmed fields in Michigan at four farms and one experiment station. Comprehensive Soil Water Chemistry at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (1999 to 2003)
Dataset Abstract Soil water samples are collected every other week during the growing season from treatments 1-7 (replicates 2-4) and the successional and forest sites using Prenart soil water samplers (sometimes referred to as lysimeters). Three sampling stations are located in each treatment and are grouped in this analysis. In this dataset, the following chemical variables were measured from 1999-2005: Ca, Mg, Na, K, NO3, total alkalinity, Cl, SO4, NH4,PO4, DOC, specific conductance, total dissolved phosphorus and Si. Trace gas on the Resource Gradient Study at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (2001 to 2003)
Dataset Abstract This study provides a gradient of nitrogen fertilization under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Nitrogen applications range from 0 to 291 kg N/ha . Plots are 5×30 m arranged in each of 4 replicate blocks. The crop rotation (wheat, corn, soybean) follows the pattern of the main site. The study started in 2002 as a rainfed only study on the south end of the main site. In 2005 a new rainfed and irrigated study was started at the south end of the lysimeter field. The original study site was discontinued in 2006. Crop yields, nitrous oxide and soil temperature, moisture and nitrogen data are available for this study. Treatments are numbered as follows: 1 = 0 kg N/ha, 2= 34 kg N/ha, 3= 67 kg N/ha, 4= 101 kg N/ha, 5= 134 kg N/ha, 6= 168 kg N/ha, 7 = 202 kg N/ha, 8= 246 kg N/ha, 9= 291 kg N/ha. original data source http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/datasets/79
Hamilton-KBS lake chemistry database, Hickory Corners, MI 1998-2011
This dataset contains water chemistry measurements for lakes sampled near the Michigan State University Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners, MI (n=139 lakes). Lake chemistry and chlorophyll samples were collected using an integrated tube sampler of the entire epilimnion (epilimnion depth was determined based on temperature profile) with sampling occuring from May-October with multiple sampling events per year. Samples were collected from 1998-2011, with no samples collected for several years in the mid-2000s. The data prior to 2010 were primarily collected by university researchers but beginning in 2010 sampling was undertaken by a graduate student funded by the Gull Lake Quality Organization (GLQO) to support monitoring of Gull Lake and its inflow streams. Lake samples were processed in the lab of Steve Hamilton, Michigan State University Kellogg BIological Station researcher.
