This research in progress explores their indexing situation in detail, their development, which is closely connected to political history, their (non-)usage, and affiliations as well as career-stages of their authors. Furthermore, it also pays attention to East-Africa-based SSH researchers who use other publication venues. Any bibliometric analysis in this field needs to rely on manual data collection, otherwise it would be heavily biased. This study lays out the foundation for citation analyses, qualitative research on the publications' content and the self-description of East-African scholars against the background of an academic environment that is often described as “international”.</p>

The FORTH-TRACE dataset for human activity recognition of simple activities and postural transitions using a Body Area Network
<p>The dataset is collected from 15 participants wearing 5 Shimmer wearable sensor nodes on the locations listed in Table 1. Present status, future trends, and control strategies of invasive alien plants in China affected by human activities and climate change
<p>Invasive alien plants (IAPs) have serious environmental and economic impacts, especially in vulnerable areas of China. However, IAP richness distribution patterns, their driving factors, and the dynamic shifts in potential distribution areas remain elusive. We assessed IAP richness distribution patterns and drivers using 402 IAPs recorded in China at 88,926 occurrence points, and then predicted their potential distribution areas. The results show that IAP hotspots were mainly located in southeastern China, especially coastal areas of the South and East and large inland cities. Population density, gross domestic product (GDP), and four climate variables associated with precipitation and temperature jointly influenced the richness distribution pattern of all IAPs. Specifically, population density and GDP impacted the richness distribution pattern of narrow-range IAPs, and population density, GDP, distance to the nearest national highway, and five climate variables affected the richness distribution pattern of widespread IAPs. Only GDP contributed significantly to the richness distribution pattern of the top 5% hotspot grid cells, whereas population density, GDP, and precipitation in the driest month (BIO14) significantly influenced the richness distribution patterns of hotspots for both the top 10% and top 20%. Prediction analysis demonstrated that southeastern China would have a particularly high invasion risk under both current and future climate scenarios. Regions with increases in predicted species richness are more common (44.83%–64.97%) than those with decreases, except under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 scenario. Climate change will contribute greatly to the expansion of potential IAP distribution areas under both optimistic (RCP 2.5) and pessimistic scenarios (RCP 8.5). The results of this study provide insights into the priority management of IAPs through developing promising strategies for the control and prevention of IAP invasion.</p>
Data from: Diurnal variation of brain activity in the human suprachiasmatic nucleus
<p>The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the central clock for circadian rhythms. Animal studies have revealed daily rhythms in the neuronal activity in the SCN. However, the circadian activity of the human SCN has remained elusive. In this study, to reveal the diurnal variation of the SCN activity in humans, the SCN was localized, and its activity was investigated using perfusion imaging. We scanned each participant four times a day, every six hours, and higher activity was observed at noon while lower activity was recorded in the early morning. The SCN activity was then measured every thirty minutes for six hours from midnight to dawn and showed a decreasing trend and was comparable with the rodent SCN activity after switching off the lights. These results suggest that the diurnal variation of the human SCN follows the zeitgeber cycles of mammals and is modulated by physical lights rather than the local time.</p>
Data from: Coordinated ARP2/3 and glycolytic activities regulate the morphological and functional fitness of human CD8+ T cells
<p>CD8<sup>+</sup> T cells rely on actin cytoskeleton remodeling to search for target cells and assemble the immunological synapse (IS) for lethal hit delivery. We here investigated how the energy expenditure related to actin remodeling might influence the fitness of human cytotoxic T cells. We first established that the spreading ability of CD8<sup>+</sup> T cells in conditions of LFA-1 and TCR engagement mirrored the cytotoxic potential of these cells. Morphological and functional fitness were both potentiated by IL-2, which co-stimulated the transcription of glycolytic enzymes, actin isoforms and the subunits of the ARP2/3 complex. This molecular program scaled with F-actin content and cell spreading. Blockade of glycolysis impaired F-actin remodeling at the lamellipodium, chemokine-driven motility and synaptic adhesion, while blockade of mitochondrial OXPHOS affected F-actin less severely and selectively reduced cell elongation during confined migration. Although T cells deficient for the ARP2/3 subunit ARPC1B increased their ATP content upon IL-2 exposure, their morphological and functional defects were only partially corrected, pointing to the pivotal position of ARP2/3 mediated actin polymerization as integrator of T cell energetic state. Our study therefore highlights that the ability of effector T cells to migrate, form IS and ultimately kill target cells depends on a tight coordination of their metabolic and actin remodeling activities.</p>

PfRH5-induced human monoclonal antibodies show broadly neutralizing activity in P. falciparum clinical isolates
<p>Vaccines to the <em>Plasmodium falciparum </em>reticulocyte binding-like protein homolog 5 (PfRH5) target the blood stage of the parasite's life cycle. PfRH5 has the potential to trigger the production of strain-transcendent antibodies and has proven its efficacy both in pre-clinical and early clinical studies. Vaccine-induced monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to PfRH5 showed promising outcomes in cultured <em>P. falciparum </em>strains from distinct geographic areas. Here, we assessed the functional impact of vaccine-induced mAbs to PfRH5 on the genetically more complex <em>P. falciparum </em>clinical isolates. We used mAbs isolated from single-cell sorted B-cells of volunteers enrolled in the phase 1a (NCT02181088) clinical trial of the viral-vectored PfRH5 vaccine and used ex-vivo growth inhibition assays (GIA) to assess their efficacy in <em>P. falciparum </em>clinical isolates. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to assess the breadth of genetic diversity in <em>P. falciparum </em>clinical isolates and to infer the genotype/phenotype relationship involved in antibody susceptibility. We showed a dose-dependent inhibition of clinical isolates with three main GIA groups, high, medium, and low. Except for one isolate, our data shows no significant differences in antibody GIA profile between the <em>P. falciparum </em>clinical isolates and the 3D7 reference strain, which harbours the vaccine allele. We observed an additive relationship, where the combination of GIA-low and GIA-medium antibodies resulted in increased GIA activities, having important implications for the contribution of specific monoclonal antibodies in polyclonal IgG responses. While our NGS analysis showed the occurrence of novel mutations in the <em>pfrh5 </em>gene, these mutations were predicted to have little or no functional impact on the antigen's structure or recognition by known mAbs. Our present findings complement earlier reports on the strain transcendent potential of mAbs to PfRH5 and constitute, to our knowledge, the first report on the susceptibility of <em>P. falciparum </em>clinical isolates from natural infections to vaccine-induced mAbs to PfRH5.</p>

Ripples reflect a spectrum of synchronous spiking activity in human anterior temporal lobe
<p>Direct brain recordings have provided important insights into how high-frequency activity captured through intracranial EEG (iEEG) supports human memory retrieval. The extent to which such activity is comprised of transient fluctuations that reflect the dynamic coordination of underlying neurons, however, remains unclear. Here, we simultaneously record iEEG, local field potential (LFP), and single unit activity in the human temporal cortex. We demonstrate that fast oscillations within the previously identified 80–120 Hz ripple band contribute to broadband high-frequency activity in the human cortex. These ripple oscillations exhibit a spectrum of amplitudes and durations related to the amount of underlying neuronal spiking. Ripples in the macro-scale iEEG are related to the number and synchrony of ripples in the micro-scale LFP, which in turn are related to the synchrony of neuronal spiking. Our data suggest that neural activity in the human temporal lobe is organized into transient bouts of ripple oscillations that reflect underlying bursts of spiking activity.</p>
Raw Data for the article: Extracellular Vesicle-Derived microRNAs of Human Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stromal Cells May Activate Endogenous VEGF-A to Promote Angiogenesis
<p>Despite low levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, the secretome of human Wharton's jelly (WJ) mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) effectively promoted proangiogenic responses in vitro, which were impaired upon the depletion of small (~140 nm) extracellular vesicles (EVs). The isolated EVs shared the low VEGF-A profile of the secretome and expressed five microRNAs, which were upregulated compared to fetal dermal MSC-derived EVs. These upregulated microRNAs exclusively targeted the <em>VEGF-A</em> gene within 54 Gene Ontology (GO) biological processes, 18 of which are associated with angiogenesis. Moreover, 15 microRNAs of WJ-MSC-derived EVs were highly expressed (Ct value ≤ 26) and exclusively targeted the thrombospondin 1 (<em>THBS1</em>) gene within 75 GO biological processes, 30 of which are associated with the regulation of tissue repair. The relationship between predicted microRNA target genes and WJ-MSC-derived EVs was shown by treating human umbilical-vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with appropriate doses of EVs. The exposure of HUVECs to EVs for 72 h significantly enhanced the release of VEGF-A and THBS1 protein expression compared to untreated control cells. Finally, WJ-MSC-derived EVs stimulated in vitro tube formation along with the migration and proliferation of HUVECs. Our findings can contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the proangiogenic responses induced by human umbilical cord-derived MSCs, suggesting a key regulatory role for microRNAs delivered by EVs.</p>

<p>This is an updated version of our original data archive (which can be found under the doi 10.5281/zenodo.5513025) that reflects changes we've made to the manuscript over the course of the review process and incorporates the new data we've collected since the time of the initial bioRxiv submission.</p> <p>This data archive contains all raw data EXCEPT for single-particle microscopy movies (which are deposited separately due to their size) for our paper titled "Endoplasmic reticulum stress activates human IRE1a through reversible assembly of inactive dimers into small oligomers". These raw data are stored in "non_SPT_data_final_v2.zip". Additionally, full plasmid sequences for all plasmids used in this paper are stored in GenBank format in the file "plasmid_sequences_v2.zip". Finally, this repository contains processed single-particle movies in the form of dual-color tracks from the TrackMate ImageJ plugin in XML format (file: "SPT_processed_data_and_settings_final_v2.zip").</p> <p>The processed XML tracks are organized in the same way as the raw data files in the separate repository. They are sorted into subfolders by date of acquisition first, followed by experimental conditions. To recreate the figures from the paper, follow instructions in the README.md file included with the source code repository and use the JSON settings files saved here under "analysis_settings".</p>
