Worker Cooperatives' Potential for Migrant Women's Self-Empowerment. Insights from a Case Study in New York City

<p>Many migrant women in New York City face structural discrimination and administrative hurdles that complicate their access to safe and well-paid labor. Worker cooperatives have been shown to reduce the precarity and economic exclusion of marginalized groups. However, although much is known about worker cooperatives&rsquo; economic potential for improving workers&rsquo; lives, other social effects remain far less well explored. The present research contributes to exploring this gap by examining how joining a worker cooperative empowers migrant women in their everyday lives. We apply the concept of self-empowerment to several spheres of the everyday lives of migrant women. At an empirical level, the study focuses on migrant women who are members of nine cleaning- or care-worker cooperatives in New York City. The data were gathered using a participatory research approach and consist of interviews, participant observations, and a quantitative survey. The findings are that worker cooperatives have empowering effects on migrant women beyond the sphere of paid work. Although the additional unpaid workload as co-owners of cooperatives represents an extra burden for many migrant women, they now have better wages, more flexibility, and safer workplaces. Furthermore, they acquire a range of leadership skills, enlarge their social network beyond their ethnic communities, and earn increased esteem as co-owners of businesses. Through worker-ownership, migrant women thus increase their economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital, which enables them to exercise more agency not only in their paid work but also in their families and leisure time.</p>

Drivers of change and stability in the gut microbiota of an omnivorous avian migrant exposed to artificial food supplementation

<p>Human activities shape resources available to wild animals, impacting diet and likely altering their microbiota and overall health. We examined drivers shaping microbiota profiles of common cranes (Grus grus) in agricultural habitats by comparing gut microbiota and crane movement patterns (GPS-tracking) over three periods of their migratory cycle, and by analyzing the effect of artificially-supplemented food provided as part of a crane-agriculture management program. We sampled fecal droppings in Russia (non-supplemented, pre-migration) and in Israel in late fall (non-supplemented, post-migration) and winter (supplemented and non-supplemented, wintering). As supplemented food is typically homogenous, we predicted lower microbiota diversity and different composition in birds relying on supplementary feeding. We did not observe changes in microbial diversity with food supplementation, as diversity differed only in samples from non-supplemented wintering sites. However, both food supplementation and season affected bacterial community composition and led to increased abundance of specific genera (mostly Firmicutes). Cranes from the non-supplemented groups spent most of their time in agricultural fields, likely feeding on residual grain when available, while food-supplemented cranes spent most of their time at the feeding station. Thus, non-supplemented and food-supplemented diets likely diverge only in winter, when crop rotation and depletion of anthropogenic resources may lead to a more variable diet in non-supplemented sites. Our results support the role of diet in structuring bacterial communities and show that they undergo both seasonal and human-induced shifts. Movement analyses provide important clues regarding host diet and behavior towards understanding how human-induced changes shape the gut microbiota in wild animals.</p>

Exploring opportunities and challenges for intangible cultural heritage at the intersection of institutions, civil society, and migrant communities

<p>This data set was produced in the CultureLabs project to explore the needs and expectations of migrant and refugee communities in several European countries in relation to communicating and sharing their intangible cultural heritage (ICH) practices as well as of cultural and civil society organisations&nbsp;that plan to support this.&nbsp;</p> <p>The data was gathered across Europe in early 2019 and consists of 101 surveys administered and 27 interviews. 101 surveys were administered to people belonging to migrant and refugee communities in several hosting countries, mostly Italy and Germany, while the countries of origin of respondents covered four continents. The survey consisted of closed-ended questions and was structured into eight thematic areas related to a balanced mix of independent and dependent variables for the generation of correlations and clusters. The thematic areas included: background information; employment status; socioeconomic status; residency or migration status; individual preferences, attitudes, and activities; intercultural awareness; extent of interest and preparedness to become actively involved in cultural activities; and access to and use of digital tools. 27 semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The interviewees were recruited from the collaborative network of the nine partner institutions in the CultureLabs project. Although each interview gave space to the issues raised by the interviewees, four themes were deepened with the majority of participants: interest in cultural activities, expectations from cultural activities, the importance of digital tools for cultural activities, and the relevance of cultural heritage activities for individuals and their socio-cultural integration in the host society.</p> <p>The findings resulted in a peer-reviewed publication available at the following link: <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13527258.2021.1922934">https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13527258.2021.1922934</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The original dataset has been processed by removing details and parts that might compromise the anonymity of the participant.&nbsp;</p> <p>This work is supported by the European Union&rsquo;s Horizon2020 project CultureLabs: Recipes for Social Innovation, under Grant Agreement 770158. Local weather and endogenous factors affect the initiation of migration in short- and medium-distance songbird migrants

<p>Migratory birds employ a variety of mechanisms to ensure appropriate timing of migration based on the integration of endogenous and exogenous information. The cues to fatten and depart from the non-breeding area are often linked to exogenous cues such as temperature or precipitation and the endogenous program. Shorter-distance migrants should rely heavily on environmental information when initiating migration given the relatively close proximity to the breeding area. However, the ability to fatten and subsequently depart may be linked to individual circumstances, including current fuel load and body size. For early and late departing migrants, we investigate the effects of temperature, precipitation, lean body mass, fuel load, and day of year on the initiation of migration (i.e., fuel load and departure timing) from the non-breeding region by analyzing 21 years of banding data for four species of short- and medium-distance migrants. Temperatures at the non-breeding area were related to temperatures at potential stopover areas. Despite local cues being predictive of conditions further north, the amount of variation explained by local weather conditions in our models differed by species and temporal period but was low overall (&lt; 33% variation explained). For each species, we also compared lean body mass and fuel load between early and late departing migrants, which showed mixed results. Our combined results suggest that most individuals migrating short or medium distances in our study did not time the initiation of migration with local predictive cues alone, but rather other factors such as lean body mass, fuel load, and day of year, which may be a proxy for the endogenous program, and those beyond the scope of our study also influenced the initiation of migration. Our study contributes to understanding which factors influence departure decisions of short- and medium-distance migrants as they transition from the non-breeding to the migratory phase of the annual cycle.</p>

Migration strategies, performance and annual activity budget in a short-distance migrant, the common starling Sturnus vulgaris

<p><span>Migratory birds typically separate energetically demanding parts of the annual cycle like breeding, moult, and migration with some species engaging in so-called moult-migration. Moult-migration is known to occur in starlings from the northern breeding populations, however, little is known about the dynamics of this phenomenon and the costs and benefits for the involved individuals. Here, using state-of-the-art multi-sensor geolocators, we gathered information about the annual cycles of 10 starlings from two breeding sites in Latvia. We used a novel analytical approach based on atmospheric pressure measurements to reveal that all but one of the tracked individuals migrated to wintering sites in the British Isles. Tracking data exposed two separate migration strategies – (1) departure from the breeding grounds in mid-June soon after chick fledging with long stationary periods at moulting sites approx. 900 km westward (n = 5 of 10); (2) residing in close vicinity of the breeding sites up until the end of October (n = 5 of 10). Accelerometer data revealed significantly higher activity budgets during moult for the individuals exhibiting moult-migration. Furthermore, birds that underwent moult-migration arrived at the breeding sites in the following year on average 10 days later and showed significantly higher activity levels during the pre-breeding period compared to birds without moult-migration. Activity tracking also showed that 67% of all migratory flights were performed during the night, contradicting previous assumptions of starlings being predominantly diurnal migrants. Maximum recorded flight altitudes reached 2500 m.a.s.l. and the longest uninterrupted flight lasted 22.5 hours. Our results highlight energetic trade-offs of moult-migration in starling, but their downstream consequences remain to be tested.</span></p>

The <em>first</em> impact chain (&ldquo;risk sender&rdquo;) models the components of the decision to migrate for rural Senegalese, accounting for hazard occurrence as well as the exposure and vulnerability. The outcome of the individual arbitrage is migration (internal or international), or immobility (willing or trapped). The <em>second</em> impact chain (&ldquo;risk receiver&rdquo;) considers the integration process for international migrants, accounting for the exposure and vulnerability of Paris in multiple dimensions (economic, social, cultural, linguistic, residential).</p>

Nowhere to escape: The cross-age avian haemosporidian exposure of migrants in Northeast China

<p>Pathogen infection has been progressively recognized as a potential driver of animal migration, and the infection pattern in a certain host may be related to its migration status. Nestling viability can be a crucial life stage in the evolution of the migration cycle but has been irregularly studied to date. In this study, we tested the 'migratory exposure' hypothesis by comparing the prevalence and diversity of avian haemosporidian parasites in the breeding area between two dominant species including adults and nestlings: yellow-rumped flycatcher (<em>Ficedula zanthopygia</em>), which is a summer migratory species, and Japanese tit (<em>Parus minor</em>), which is a local resident species. The yellow-rumped flycatcher harboured more diverse parasite lineages than the Japanese tit, which is in line with the expectation of the 'migratory exposure' hypothesis, while nestlings present a similar but more applicable pattern. Among the 40 unique identified parasite lineages, only one was shared between host species and three between age classes. Nestlings suffered a high parasite diversity with plenty of age-specific lineages in the breeding area, mainly Leucocytozoon, which may suggest an extraordinary selection pressure in the life-stages not just for adults during migration. However, the most common lineages in adults were not detected in nestlings, and the prevalence of infection is significantly lower in nestlings than in adults. Our results suggest that migratory birds may have suffered from more frequent parasite infections during migration, but escaped from more virulent lineages at the same time. The difference in susceptibility and parasite assembly between adults and nestlings in migrants may result from an intricate interaction along the evolution of life history. Our investigations have revealed the significance of avian haemosporidian parasite infection patterns in nestlings in breeding areas, and provide a novel insight into the driving forces of migration.</p>

A gradual migratory divide determines not only the direction of migration but also migration strategy of a social migrant bird

<p>Migratory divides separate populations of migratory animals, facilitating the evolution of intraspecific differences in migration strategies. Migration strategies are expected to be different for birds using different flyways and environments, but the knowledge regarding the impact of the flyway on individual migration strategies is scarce. By using satellite tracking and neckband resightings, we reveal the existence and structure of a gradual migratory divide between two European flyway populations of greylag geese <em>Anser anser</em>. Birds breeding at the far end of the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea coast use the Western Flyway; those breeding in the Gulf of Finland the Central Flyway and those breeding between these extremes scatter to the two flyways. By using Gaussian process modelling, we show that migration strategies differed between the flyways. The birds using Western Flyway migrated earlier in autumn, performed longer annual migration and made a clear stopover during migration, whereas the birds using Central Flyway flew directly to their wintering sites. The gradual migratory divide that also divides migration strategies provides insights to migratory divides in birds with learned migration. Distinct migration strategies in different flyways provide exciting possibilities to further study the factors driving migration strategies.</p>
