Measurements of dissolved inorganic concentrations of nutrient iron and of iron limitation at selected stations and depths from CalCOFI cruises in the California Current System, Nov. 2002 - July 2004 (completed)

Measurements were made of iron (Fe) and the potential for phytoplankton iron limitation on CalCOFI survey cruises (2002-2004) in coastal transition zones of the southern California Current System. This is a weak upwelling regime that is relatively low in nutrients and chlorophyll. The majority of seawater samples from the mixed layer were collected using a pole sampler, others were collected using a trace metal clean Teflon pump system. Profiles for dissolved Fe analysis were collected using GO Flo bottles attached to a synthetic line and the seawater samples were filtered under ultra-pure conditions. Dissolved Fe was measured using an FeLume flow injection analysis system. Changes in phytoplankton (Chla response to Fe+) and nutrient parameters upon iron addition were also investigated.

Data from: Evolution of root plasticity responses to variation in soil nutrient distribution and concentration

Root plasticity, a trait that can respond to selective pressure, may help plants forage for nutrients in heterogeneous soils. Agricultural breeding programs have artificially selected for increased yield under comparatively homogeneous soil conditions, potentially decreasing the capacity for plasticity in crop plants like barley (Hordeum vulgare). However, the effects of domestication on the evolution of root plasticity are essentially unknown. Using a split container approach, we examined differences in root plasticity among three domestication levels of barley germplasm (wild, landrace, and cultivar) grown under different concentrations and distribution patterns of soil nutrients. Domestication level, nutrient concentration, and nutrient distribution interactively affected average root diameter; differential root allocation (within-plant plasticity) was greatest in wild barley (H. spontaneum), especially under low nutrient levels. Correlations of within-plant root plasticity and plant size were most pronounced in modern cultivars under low nutrient conditions. Barley plants invested more resources to root systems when grown in low nutrient soils and allocated more roots to higher nutrient locations. Root plasticity in barley is scale dependent and varies with domestication level. Although wild barley harbors a greater capacity for within-plant root plasticity than domesticated barley, cultivars exhibited the greatest capacity to translate within-plant plasticity into increased plant size.

Data from: Relationships between leaf mass per area and nutrient concentrations in 98 Mediterranean woody species are determined by phylogeny, habitat and leaf habit

Leaf structural and nutrient traits are key attributes of plant ecological strategies, as these traits are related to resource-use strategies and plant growth. However, leaf structure and nutrient composition can vary among different habitats, leaf habits or phylogenetic groups. In this study, we measured 13 leaf traits (one structural—leaf mass per area, LMA—and 12 nutrient traits) in 98 Mediterranean woody species growing over a wide range of environmental conditions, with the final aim of discerning the main causes of leaf trait variability. The variance decomposition results show that phylogeny, leaf habit and habitat type affected in several ways the structural and nutrient traits studied. Leaf nutrient concentrations are strongly positively correlated amongst themselves, and negatively correlated with LMA, in accordance with the "leaf economics spectrum". We found that leaf habit and phylogeny were important causes of variation in LMA and in a broad number of leaf nutrients (i.e., C, N, Mg, S, K), while other micronutrients seemed to be more dependent on the environment (i.e., Cu and Mn). In summary, our study reinforces the existence of the leaf economics spectrum in a broad pool of Mediterranean woody species, and demonstrates the strong influence of phylogeny, leaf habit and environmental context as the main drivers of variability in some leaf structural and nutrient traits.

Calcium concentration regulates interspecific interaction of algae along the nutrient gradient

<p><span>Although many studies have focused on the influence of </span><span>abiotic stress gradient</span><span>s on biological interactions, few studies explained the effects of both resource and non-resource stress gradients on the facilitation between species.</span><span> We conducted a controlled experiment to study the effects of nutrient stress gradient on the interspecific relationship between <em>Phormidium corium</em> and <em>Scenedesmus quadricauda</em> under different calcium concentration. The results showed that when the calcium concentration was high, the change of interspecific relationship between the two algae along the nutrient stress gradient accorded with the SGH theory, that is, the competitive interaction changed into positive interaction. The reason for this phenomenon may be that in the stress environment, the population density is low and the encounter rate is low; secondly, facilitation may improve the harsh environment and make it more beneficial to the beneficiary species, which may enable the beneficiary species to survive in the environment that they could not survive before. When the calcium concentration was low, the change of interspecific relationship along resource stress was in line with the "Hump hypothesis", that is, facilitation reached the peak under medium resource stress. This phenomenon may be caused by the interaction between salt stress and nutrient. When calcium stress was high, it may not be conducive to the absorption of nutrients by algae, resulting in the fierce competition for limited resources in the harsh environment. While the facilitation effect may be strongest in the medium stress environment due to the relatively sufficient resource. These results emphasized the joint effects of various stress factors on interspecific relationships, especially the importance of non-resource stress in the study of community composition, pointed out a new direction for the study of facilitation, and provided theoretical guidance for the prevention and control of freshwater blooms.</span></p>

Global Distribution of Root Nutrient Concentrations in Terrestrial Ecosystems

Nutrient measurements for fine roots were compiled from 56 published studies providing information on 372 different combinations of species, root diameter, rooting depths, and soils at a variety of locations. The compilation was used to examine dynamics of 14 nutrients, including translocation properties of roots of varying size and status.Fine roots are an important source and sink for nutrients in terrestrial biogeochemistry. The data collected come from 56 published studies that give information on fine root (less than 5mm diameter) nutrient concentrations, root diameters, and retranslocation of nutrients. These studies include diverse vegetation and biomes, including grass, shrub, and tree functional types from temperate, tropical, boreal and tundra systems. The preponderance of data comes from experiments with temperate and coniferous trees.

A Global Database of Carbon and Nutrient Concentrations of Green and Senesced Leaves

This data set provides carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations in green and senesced leaves. Vegetation characteristics reported include species growth habit, leaf area, mass, and mass loss with senescence. The data were compiled from 86 selected studies in 31 countries, and resulted in approximately 1,000 data points for both green and senesced leaves from woody and non-woody vegetation as described in Vergutz et al (2012). The studies were conducted from 1970-2009. There are two comma-delimited data files with this data set.
