Dietary flavanols restore hippocampal-dependent memory in older adults with lower diet quality and habitual flavanol consumption
<p>Dietary flavanols are food constituents found in certain fruits and vegetables that have been linked to cognitive aging. Previous studies suggested that consumption of dietary flavanols might specifically be linked to the hippocampal-dependent memory component of cognitive aging and that memory benefits of a flavanol intervention might depend on habitual diet quality. Here, we tested these hypotheses in the context of a large-scale study of 3,562 older adults, who were randomly assigned to a 3-y intervention of cocoa extract (500 mg of cocoa flavanols per day) or a placebo [(COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study) COSMOS-Web, NCT04582617]. Using the alternative healthy eating index in all participants and a urine-based biomarker of flavanol intake in a subset of participants [n = 1,361], we show that habitual flavanol consumption and diet quality at baseline are positively and selectively correlated with hippocampal-dependent memory. While the prespecified primary endpoint testing for an intervention-related improvement in memory in all participants after 1 y was not statistically significant, the flavanol intervention restored memory among participants in lower tertiles of habitual diet quality or habitual flavanol consumption. Increases in the flavanol biomarker over the course of the trial were associated with improving memory. Collectively, our results allow dietary flavanols to be considered in the context of a depletion–repletion paradigm and suggest that low flavanol consumption can act as a driver of the hippocampal-dependent component of cognitive aging.</p>

Older adults on the move
<p>The world population is ageing. Led by diminishing birth rates, increased material prosperity, improved working and environmental conditions, better nutrition, and medical advances, this growing demographic change towards an ageing population poses challenges to national health and social security systems. For the individuals themselves, however, increasing life expectancy opens up opportunities to start a new phase in life after retirement. One practice of particular importance for ageing populations is transnational mobility. Older adults can, for example, travel the world, move to another country or spend part of the year in a place of their choice.<br> To provide a better understanding of such transnational mobilities in old age, a mixedmethods research project was conducted in the framework of the NCCR-on the move.<br> This project produced quantitative data through two Transnational-Ageing Surveys, and a qualitative study conducted in Switzerland and Spain. The mixed-methods project aimed to collect complementary data on transnational practices developed by<br> ageing populations with a connection to Switzerland.<br> This codebook summarizes data collected in the qualitative part of the mixedmethods research project. It presents information related to</p> <ol> <li>the interview modes and contexts;</li> <li>the socio-demographic characteristics of participants;</li> <li>the postretirement mobilities observed in the field; and</li> <li>cross-border financial transfers.</li> </ol>
Dataset for: Older adults' suggestions of research topics on ageing well in urban environments – a participatory study
<p>Dataset related to the manuscript <em>Older adults’ suggestions of research topics on ageing well in urban environments – a participatory study</em>.</p> <p>For this study, a total of 1000 participants aged 65 years or older from five different neighborhoods of Berlin were randomly chosen and were sent a single item questionnaire allowing them to freely propose research topics regarding ageing well in the city. This dataset contains the valid answers we received by participants. Only information that potentially allowed identification of the participants (name, addresses, exact location descriptions) were redacted.</p>
Community attachment as a factor in the subjective well-being of older adults in urban and rural areas: A case study in Tokyo, Osaka, and Shikoku region in Japan
<p>This study explored the relationship between community participation/community attachment and subjective well-being (SWB) among Japanese older adults. The study was conducted in Japanese urban (Tokyo and Osaka) and rural (Shikoku region) areas. Structural equation modelling was performed to assess the potential relationship between community participation, community attachment and SWB. Results showed that community participation and community attachment were positively associated in both areas. However, community attachment had a significant impact on SWB only in rural areas with little impact on increasing SWB in urban areas. We conclude that the role of community attachment varies according to regions with different socioeconomic properties. These findings contribute to the design of detailed region-specific initiatives to improve SWB of older adults.</p>
