Cryogenic Liquid Level-Sensing using Fiber-Optic Strain Sensor (FOSS) Technology Project

Armstrong innovators have developed a highly accurate method for measuring liquid levels using optical fibers. Unlike liquid level gauges that rely on discrete measurements to give broad approximations of liquid levels, Armstrong’s novel method provides measurements at ¼-inch intervals within a tank. The system uses fiber optic Bragg sensors located along a single fiber optic cable. These sensors actively discern between the liquid and gas states along a continuous fiber to pinpoint the liquid level. This significant leap forward in precision and accuracy in liquid level sensing offers significant benefits to many industries. Designed to monitor a rocket’s cryogenic fuel levels, the technology can be used in many medical and industrial applications.

Work to date: The technology has been demonstrated in multiple environments using conventional validation techniques. First, water level measurements have been conducted to demonstrate operation within a benign environment. Second, liquid level measurements were conducted in liquid nitrogen using a 6-foot dewer. Measurements also were conducted within a liquid hydrogen environment using a 4-foot dewer. The technology performed well in all three cases, demonstrating the ability to measure liquid to ¼ inch.

Looking ahead: The team continues to push the fields of application with future tests to determine boundary layers between different fluids such as oil and water. Also there are planned opportunities to demonstrate the technology in a NASA-operated cryogenic test bed, simulating a cryogenic fuel management scenario.

Benefits

Precise: Can gauge liquid levels within a ¼-inch

Simple: Requires just one fiber optic strand and one metallic wire, as opposed to conventional measurement systems, which require many more wires

Safe: Is not susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI)

Robust: Can be used in corrosive or toxic liquids without damaging the fiber or contaminating the liquid

Applications

Aerospace launch vehicles and satellites

Chemical and refinery plants

Industrial tanks

Compact Fiber Optic Strain Sensors (cFOSS) Element

Armstrong researchers are reducing the Fiber Optic Sensing Sysme (FOSS) technology’s size, power requirement, weight, and cost to effectively extend opportunities for broader fields of application. Unlike current commercially available systems, which are limited by the number of fibers that are interrogated simultaneously, Armstrong’s cFOSS technology maintains its multi-fiber capability (four or eight fibers) while providing a smaller overall form factor. FOSS is the size of a shoebox and weighs 28.5 pounds; cFOSS will be the size of a 6-inch cube and weigh less than 10 pounds. Each component within the system has been custom-designed specifically for miniaturization, thus reducing capital costs. As industries strive for ever smaller profiles, this miniaturization will be an important benefit for multiple markets. For example, small aviation UAVs would benefit significantly from this smaller, more compact, and lightweight package.

Work to date: In partnership with the AERO Institute, researchers have flown the cFOSS v1.0 system, a convection-cooled 5-lb version, on a small UAV, interrogating four fibers simultaneously.

Looking ahead: By the end of December 2015, cFOSS v2.0, with conduction cooling, will fly on an Antares rocket.

Benefits

Cost-efficient: Each component within the system has been custom designed specifically for miniaturization, thus reducing capital costs

Compact: The miniaturized size requires less associated hardware than existing systems

Reliable: Components are customized for aggressive environments yet maintain a compact form factor

Applications

Aeronautics and launch vehicles

Medical procedures

Drilling

Wind energy

Automotive testing

Industrial processes

Data set from "Combining fiber Brillouin amplification with a repeater laser station for fiber-based optical frequency dissemination over 1400 km"

The data set contains the data underlying the fiber link performance evaluation published in Koke et al 2019 New J. Phys. 21 123017 (https://doi.org/10.1088/1367-2630/ab5d95). The experimental setup and the methodology used is explained in this publication.

The data is stored in the Matlab(R)-native file format. Although proprietary, import of data from this file format is supported by other numerical computing environments, too. An example script for importing into Python is included.

The files 'data_export_campaign_*.mat' contain the timeseries data shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. Each of these files include variables with the following meaning:
'date_year', 'date_month', 'date_day', 'time_hour', 'time_minute', 'time_second': Timestamp of the data sample in UTC time
'inloop1' and 'inloop2': $\Lambda_{1s}$ frequency offset from nominal value in Hz of the beat signal used for stabilizing the uplink
'aom': $\Lambda_{1s}$ frequency offset from nominal value in Hz of the uplink servo acoustic-optical modulator's drive frequency
'remote1' and 'remote2': $\Lambda_{1s}$ frequency offset from nominal value in Hz of the roundtrip beat signal used for out-of-loop characterization of the frequency transfer error
'no_of_run_in_NJP_21_123017': A flag indicating the measurement runs discussed in the paper. Samples with the same non-zero integer values belong to the same measurement run. Samples marked with 0 did not enter the publication.
'DataCollected_FBAPTBLocked_CavityLocked': Result of our current monitoring of the fulfillment of the prerequisites for fiber link performance evaluation; values of 1/True indicate that data logging was active, the transfer laser was locked to the signal of the ultra-stable cavity, and the lock of the FBA(PTB) pump laser was active.

The file 'data_export_uplink_downlink_aom.mat' contains the data underlying the fiber phase noise correlation analysis in Fig. 5.
'aom_uplink': $\Lambda_{1s}$ frequency offset from nominal value in Hz of the uplink servo acoustic-optical modulator's drive frequency
'aom_downlink': $\Lambda_{1s}$ frequency offset from nominal value in Hz of the downlink servo acoustic-optical modulator's drive frequency

Since publication of the paper, we discovered a slight inconsistency of the nominal frequencies used in our analysis. Hence, remote fractional frequency offsets published in Koke et al 2019 New J. Phys. 21 123017 have to be corrected by subtracting fractional frequency values of 4.2E-22 (campaigns 2015-06, 2016-03, 2018-03) and 3.3E-22 (campaign 2018-12). This inconsistency does not change the conclusions drawn in the paper as these corrections are well below the associated statistical uncertainties. The correct nominal frequency values have been employed for the uploaded data set.
