Single Particle Investigation of Triolein Digestion using Optical Manipulation, Polarized Video Microscopy, and SAXS
<p>Hypothesis: Understanding how soft colloids, such as food emulsion droplets, transform based on their environment is critical for various applications, including drug and nutrient delivery and biotechnology. However, the mechanisms behind colloidal transformations within individual oil droplets still need to be better understood.</p> <p>Experiments: This study employs optical micromanipulation with microfluidics and polarized optical video microscopy to investigate the pancreatic lipase- and pH-triggered colloidal transformations in a single triolein droplet. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) provides complementary statistical insights and allows for detailed structural assignment.</p> <p>Findings: Optical video microscopy recorded the transformation of individual triolein emulsion droplets, with the smooth surface of these spherical particles becoming rough and the entire volume eventually being affected. The polarized microscopy revealed the coexistence of at least two distinct structures in a single particle during digestion, with their ratio and distribution altered by pH. The SAXS analysis assigned the optical anisotropy to emulsified inverse hexagonal- and multilamellar phases, coexisting with isotropic structures such as the micellar cubic phase. These results can help understand the liquid-liquid crystalline phase transformations inside an emulsion droplet and guide the design of advanced food emulsions.</p>
Polar atmospheric and aerosol river detection catalogs
<p>These detection catalogs of atmospheric and aerosol rivers were created for the publication <em>Lapere et al., "Polar aerosol atmospheric rivers: detection, characteristics and potential applications", Journal of Geophysical Research, Submitted</em>. The associated methodology is described in this publication.</p> <p>They provide binary detection of Atmospheric river (AR), Black carbon aerosol atmospheric river (BC_AER), Dust aerosol atmospheric river (DU_AER), Sea salt aerosol atmospheric river (SS_AER) and Organic carbon aerosol atmospheric river (OC_AER), in NetCDF format, for the period 1980-2022, with a 3-hour time resolution and 1x1° spatial resolution, for the regions 30°-90°N (indicated by the suffix "NH") and 30°-90°S (indicated by the suffix "SH").</p> <p>The code for pre-processing raw MERRA2 data, along with the detection algorithm are also provided here as Python Jupyter notebooks.</p>

Timing uncertainty in collective risk dilemmas encourages group reciprocation and polarization
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Social dilemmas are often shaped by actions involving uncertain returns only achievable in the future, such as climate action or voluntary vaccination. In this context, uncertainty may produce non-trivial effects. Here, we assess experimentally — through a collective risk dilemma — the effect of timing uncertainty, i.e. how uncertainty about when a target needs to be reached affects the participants' behaviours. We show that timing uncertainty prompts not only early generosity but also polarised outcomes, where participants' total contributions are distributed unevenly. Furthermore, analysing participants' behaviour under timing uncertainty reveals an increase in reciprocal strategies. A data-driven game-theoretical model captures the self-organizing dynamics underpinning these behavioural patterns. Timing uncertainty thus casts a shadow on the future that leads participants to respond early, while reciprocal strategies appear to be important for group success. Yet, the same uncertainty also leads to inequity and polarisation, necessitating the inclusion of new incentives handling these societal issues. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
How to reveal metastable skyrmionic spin structures by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy
<p>We predict the occurrence of metastable skyrmionic spin structures such as antiskyrmions and<br> higher-order skyrmions in ultra-thin transition-metal films at surfaces using Monte Carlo simulations<br> based on a spin Hamiltonian parametrized from density functional theory calculations.Weshow that<br> such spin structures will appear with a similar contrast in spin-polarized scanning tunneling<br> microscopy images. Both skyrmions and antiskyrmions display a circular shape for out-of-plane<br> magnetized tips and a two-lobe butterfly contrast for in-plane tips. An unambiguous distinction can<br> be achieved by rotating the tip magnetization direction without requiring the information of all<br> components of the magnetization.</p>

Transition between distinct hybrid skyrmion textures through their hexagonal-to-square crystal transformation in a polar magnet
<p>The file Manuscript data files.7z contains the experimental data used for creating the figures in the manuscript entitled "Transition between distinct hybrid skyrmion textures through their hexagonal-to-square crystal transformation in a polar magnet" that appear in Nature Communications 14, 8050 (2023).</p><p>Paper abstract: Magnetic skyrmions, topological vortex-like spin textures, garner significant interest due to their unique properties and potential applications in nanotechnology. While they typically form a hexagonal crystal with distinct internal magnetisation textures known as Bloch- or Néel-type, recent theories suggest the possibility for direct transitions between skyrmion crystals of different lattice structures and internal textures. To date however, experimental evidence for these potentially useful phenomena have remained scarce. Here, we discover the polar tetragonal magnet EuNiGe3 to host two hybrid skyrmion phases, each with distinct internal textures characterised by anisotropic combinations of Bloch- and Néel-type windings. Variation of the magnetic field drives a direct transition between the two phases, with the modification of the hybrid texture concomitant with a hexagonal-to-square skyrmion crystal transformation. We explain these observations with a theory that includes the key ingredients of momentum-resolved Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that compete at the observed low symmetry magnetic skyrmion crystal wavevectors. Our findings underscore the potential of polar magnets with rich interaction schemes as promising for discovering new topological magnetic phases.</p>

The Eclipse Clock-Eclipse on a Polar Day
<p>First place winner in the 2023 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Still images of the day arc of the Sun and solargraphs: The Eclipse Clock-Eclipse on a Polar Day, by Stephanie Ziyi Ye</p> <p>Constructed by combining multiple images over the course of a 24-hour period, the image was captured in Union Glacier, Antarctica, during the total solar eclipse of 4 December 2021, and showcases the day arc of the Sun. It illustrates the unique phenomenon of a polar day, during which the Sun travels around the sky without setting. During polar days, areas within the polar circles experience 24 hours of continuous daylight, and the Sun doesn’t set for an extended period. The image also offers a rare perspective of a solar eclipse, where the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and as viewed from Earth.
