Quality Attributes Assessment in Self-Adaptive Systems: An Empirical Evaluation

<p>Self-adaptive Systems (SAS) can monitor themselves and their context. They can detect changes and react to unexpected conditions with minimal human supervision during their execution. One of the challenges behind developing SAS is dealing with the decision-making process while analyzing the tradeoff points among the multiple quality attributes (QA). In Software Engineering, a widely accepted method of evaluating QA goals in software projects is the Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM). However, despite its importance and wide acceptance, there are few reports of empirical studies on analyzing QA tradeoffs in SAS. In this sense, the present investigation proposes an adapted version of ATAM called ATAM-4SAS to deal with the particularities of SAS. To achieve the research goal, we employed the UPPAAL SMC (statistical verification model) to analyze a set of QA. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method, we performed an empirical study on the execution of the ATAM-4SAS in a SAS developed according to the MAPE-K model. This model encompasses the Monitoring, Analysis, Planning, and Execution phases. Such steps share a knowledge base (K), which is fundamental in supporting decision-making. We complemented the empirical evaluation by conducting a focus group, which sought to assess the perceived ease of use and the perceived usefulness of the ATAM-4SAS to support the strategic choice of QA in a SAS. As a result, we observed that most participants agreed that ATAM-4SAS provides adequate support for the strategic choice of QA in SAS.</p>

Towards an Assessment Rubric for EiPE Tasks in Secondary Education: Identifying Quality Indicators and Descriptors

<p>This study reports on reseach to investigating indicators and descriptors which characterize the quality of students&rsquo; code explanations to EiPE (Explain in Plain English) tasks in secondary education.&nbsp;</p> <p>First, a literature review was carried out to identify quality characteristics and descriptors that differentiate the quality of students&rsquo; responses in tertiary education. Then, the quality of upper-secondary students&rsquo; responses to a simple EiPE task was analyzed. The results of that analysis were used to refine our quality characteristics and descriptors, which were then translated into a prototypical rubric. In the final phase, the rubric was iteratively tested by two teachers and improved based on their feedback. The final rubric prototype can be used to provide feedback during formative assessment.</p> <p><br> This repository includes the EiPE comprehension task, the student responses, and the results from coding the responses:<br> - StudentResponses.pdf: task and anonymized solutions provided by students, translated to English<br> - Coding_data.xls: coding by two researchers until they came to an agreement (full set of 34 responses), and coding by Teacher1 on complete set, and coding by Teacher2 on the base-set (with duplicate responses omitted)</p>

Assessing the Nature and Quality of Emergency Obstetric Care for Preventing Maternal and Perinatal Mortality in 8 Secondary and Tertiary Hospitals in Nigeria: Results of a Formative Research Study

<p>Nigeria suffers some of the highest rates of maternal and perinatal mortality in the world. Poor quality of obstetric care is a key factor, and although not quantified at a national level, local studies suggest that high rates of maternal and perinatal deaths are due to clinical management errors in hospitals. This project therefore explored the nature of existing practices and quality of clinical management of three leading causes of maternal and perinatal deaths (primary postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, and obstructed labour); implement an intervention package aimed at improving the quality of clinical management of these causes of deaths; and test the effectiveness of this package on quality of care indicators and maternal and perinatal outcomes. </p> <p>The study follows a quasi-experimental research design, using interrupted time series analysis for assessment over a three year period.  Six public secondary care hospitals and two public tertiary care hospitals in both north and south of Nigeria were selected randomly. Formative research was  conducted in all eight hospitals, and thereafter the intervention will be carried out in four hospitals, with the remaining four hospitals functioning as control sites.  </p> <p>Clinical outcomes will be compared between intervention and control sites in a total of 2334 cases of PPH, preeclampsia/eclampsia and obstructed labour (based on an anticipated 50% reduction in case fatality rates, significance level of 0.05 and 80% power). This will consist of 1167 cases in the intervention sites and 1167 in the control sites.  Maternal and perinatal mortality rates will serve as primary outcome measures. Secondary outcomes involve quality of care drawn from United Nations process indicators, skilled attendance index and data derived from this formative audit phase of the project.</p> <p>The results will enable the identification of a system-wide quality of care framework for improving the delivery of emergency obstetric care for the prevention of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in Nigeria.</p>

This will consist of 1167 cases in the intervention sites and 1167 in the control sites.  Maternal and perinatal mortality rates will serve as primary outcome measures.
