Darwin Core Archive: Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at shallow outcrops

Nine nearshore, shallow-water rock outcrops, seven along the mainland and two off Anacapa Island, were monitored annually from 1995 to 2000. All locations were surveyed using scuba, and belt transects was were conducted at each site. These natural outcrops are geographically distributed across the Santa Barbara Channel providing opportunities for spatial and temporal comparisons between natural reef and oil/gas platforms. Darwin Core Archive: Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at shallow regions of oil and gas platforms (SCUBA)

This dataset included fish counts that were surveyed in the shallow sections (0 – 40 meters) of the oil and gas platforms using Scuba. The oil and gas platforms are located in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. Each of the eleven platforms (GILDA, GINA, HOLLY, IRENE, HERMOSA, HIDALGO, GAIL, GRACE, HARVEST, C, and HENRY) were surveyed multiple times a year from 1995 to 2000. This scuba project was conducted and reported under a cooperative agreement (Agreement 1445-CA09-95-0836) between the U. S. Geological Survey (Biological Resources Division) and the University of California, Santa Barbara. This dataset is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, occurrence core). Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON Darwin Core Archive: Nearshore kelp forest integrated benthic cover, 1980-ongoing

The Santa Barbara Channel Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (SBCMBON) tracks long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This dataset contains cover of kelp forest sessile invertebrates, understory macroalgae, and substrate types by integrating data from four contributing projects working in the kelp forests of the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. Divers collect data on using either uniform point contact (UPC) or random point contact (RPC) methods. The four contributing projects are two research projects: The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER) and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), the kelp forest monitoring program of the Santa Barbara Channel National Park, and the San Nicolas Island monitoring program supported by USGS. Together, these projects have recorded data for more than 200 species at approximately 100 sites on both the mainland coast and on the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Sampling began in 1982 and is ongoing. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. Percent cover is recorded for taxa where individuals cannot be counted. Cover can be calculated from the data here as the fraction of total points at which the taxon was present x 100. With UPC and RPC methods, multiple species can be recorded at any given point. The total percent cover of all species combined using this method can exceed 100%; however, the percent cover of any single species cannot exceed 100%. This dataset contains counts of algae and invertebrates (both sessile and mobile) by integrating data from four contributing projects working in the kelp forests of the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. The four contributing projects are two research projects: The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER) and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), the kelp forest monitoring program of the Santa Barbara Channel National Park, and the San Nicolas Island monitoring program supported by USGS. Together, these projects have recorded data for more than 200 species at approximately 100 sites on both the mainland coast and on the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Sampling began in 1982 and is ongoing. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. Stable isotope content (carbon, nitrogen) for epibenthic suspension feeders and Macrocyctis pyrifera at in the Santa Barbara Channel, 2010-2011

This dataset includes measurments of stable carbon, nitrogen isotopes in tissues of eight epibenthic suspension feeders and Macrocystis pyrifera (giant kelp) at three reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel during 2010 and 2011, as part of a study to (a) determine the contributions of phytoplankton and giant kelp detritus to the pool of suspended reef particulate organic matter (POM), and usage by benthic susupension feeders and (b) whether POM composition varies with distance from kelp forests. Species sampled include Chaceia ovoidea (bivalve), Aglaophenia spp (ostrich plume hydrozoan), Cucumaria piperata (echinoderm), Muricea californica (cnidarian), Phragmatopoma californica (tube worm), Parapholas californica (bivalve), Pachythyone rubra (echinoderm), and Styela montereyensis (tunicate). Samples were collected at three core SBC LTER research reefs: Arroyo Quemado, Arroyo Burro, and Mohawk. Potentially important food sources to benthic suspension-feeders on shallow subtidal reefs include phytoplankton-dominated seston, kelp-derived detritus, and for locations adjacent to sources of freshwater runoff, terrestrially-derived material. Our data will be input to mixing models to estimate the contribution of each source to the reef food web.

SBC LTER: Kelp blade characteristics to support turnover dynamics of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera in the Santa Barbara Channel

These data describe the age-specific changes in the size and related traits of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) blades in the Santa Barbara Channel (Isla Vista Reef) during the spring and summer of 2012-2013. Data are contained in three tables: 1) a time series of change in blade size with age due to growth and senescence for blades growing at different depths and locations in the kelp forest, 2) physical traits of blades (biomass density, nitrogen, chlorophyll a) of different ages collected at different depths and locations in the kelp forest, and 3) photosynthetic performance (Pmax, alpha) of blades of different ages collected at different depths and locations in the kelp forest. These data were used to test whether spatial variation in the turnover dynamics of giant kelp blades could be could be explained by leaf life span theory developed for higher plants. The data were also used in a mathematical model of frond growth and senescence to investigate the relative and absolute magnitude of blade senescence in a kelp forest, and to examine how these losses were affected by light availability. Kelp forest fish communities environmental DNA samples from Santa Barbara Channel

The dataset in this package is the processed fish community structure inferred from 12S eDNA metabarcoding in the Santa Barbara Channel. 49 water samples were collected across 11 sites in 2017 and the taxa were identified to the highest resolution possible. Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON: Gray Whales Count

This dataset documents the passage of gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) migrating northbound since 2007, through the nearshore areas of the Santa Barbara Channel, along a corridor extending approximately 3 nautical miles (nm) from the mainland shore. The data is collected by a non-profit organization Gray Whales Count (http://www.graywhalescount.org/GWC/The_Count/The_Count.htmt), which is a research and education project. The survey is conducted at the Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta, California, USA. The coastline runs east-west, with northbound whales traveling west, left to right across our Point towards Point Conception. Every year, we survey 98 consecutive days from early February through mid-May. Conditions permitting, each survey-day begins at 9 AM and ends usually at 5 PM.

MBON: Benthic percent cover in the Santa Barbara Channel

This study aims to quantify the percent cover of sessile species from shallow rocky reefs along the coast of Santa Barbara Channel, including the Channel Island National Park monitoring sites. BisQue (Bio-Imagery Semantic Query User Environment, a cloud-based analysis platform) was used to analyzed over 1500 images taken between 2013 and 2015 on the shallow reefs. This is the first phase of a bigger project that directs to improve the image analysis to complement or replace time-consuming in-situ surveys by divers. This data set contains percent cover and occurrence data of invertebrates, algae and fish from 22 subtidal rocky reef sites (Anacapa Landing, Arroyo Burro, Arroyo Quemado, Carpinteria, Cathedral Cove, Cuyler-Bat Rock, Diablo, Ellwood Mesa, Fry’s, Gull Island, Hazards, Isla Vista, Johnsons Lee-North, Mohawk, Naples, Pelican, Prisoners, Rhodes, Scorpion, Solimar, West-End and Cat Rock, Yellowbank). One survey image was collected at each site. Images were processed from 2015-2017 using BisQue with over 300 unique identifying tags. Data are organized in two tables (1) percent cover, (2) occurrence (present-absent).

SBC LTER: data summary from UNOLS cruises in the Santa Barbara Channel beetween 2001-2006

This data package includes a summary list of data that were collected from the RV Pt. Sur. Cruises which took place from 2001 to 2006 in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. There are total of 16 cruises and 3-4 times per year with approximately 7 days in length. Three data types are included in the summary sheet: 1. CTD and rosette profile bottle data; 2. SBC LTER: Ocean: High-resolution Landsat 8 chlorophyll imagery of the Santa Barbara Channel

This is a timeseries of Landsat 8 images of the Santa Barbara Channel, processed for both chlorophyll and particulate backscattering. These data are at a particularly high spatial resolution (30 m), making them useful for analysis of submesoscale biophysical and biogeochemical interactions in the SBC, and for comparison with high-resolution modeling results. Data are contained in netcdf files, and there are 88 images in total, spanning the deployment of Landsat 8 (2013 - present). MATLAB scripts are available to load the netcdf files, flag the bad pixels, interpolate over the flagged pixels, and plot images, in the matlab folder. In addition, Landsat8_chl_imagery.zip contains jpegs of all of the images. A recommended workflow to users would be looking through all the jpegs to decide what images you want, and then downloading those specific netcdf files and using the matlab scripts and accompanying functions to process them. Our hope is that concurrent study of submesoscale variability in phytoplankton biomass via both submesoscale-resolving model studies and high-resolution satellite imagery may reveal further insights into the importance of submesoscale biophysical variability to regional and global biogeochemical processes.

Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON: genomics study on 16S primer comparison

This project examined the effects of 16S rRNA gene primer selection on population representation and community ecology of bacteria and archaea in the Santa Barbara Channel. Four 16S rRNA primer sets targeting different hypervariable regions of the gene were compared using both mock communities of known composition constructed from cloned 16S rRNA genes and field samples covering the annual cycle. Amplicon results were compared with shotgun metagenomes prepared from a subset of the field samples. The field samples included in the comparison study are subsets of two more extensive field programs in the Santa Barbara Channel. Samples included from the Plumes and Blooms transect times-series program were collected between February 2012 and August 2014. Samples from University-National Oceanographic Laboratory Systems cruise PS1103 (Wear et al. 2015; DOI: 10.1002/lno.10042) were collected in May 2011. All datasheets represent curated, processed output of the bioinformatics pipeline. Unprocessed sequencing data are archived with the National Center for Biotechnology Information, with accession numbers specified in the individual datasheets. Four dataset entities included primer testing on a known mock community (Entity #1 and #2) as well as the application of the primers to field samples (Entity #3) and shotgun metagenomes from a subset of field samples (Entity #4): 1) Cloned 16S genes used to construct the mock community. 2) Mock community sequencing results - relative abundance of each clone with each of 4 primer sets. 3) Field sequencing results - relative abundance of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and weighted UniFrac distance matrices. 4) Metagenome results – taxonomic identities of individual 16S rRNA sequences identified in each metagenome. The data were collected by the Reef Check organization: https://reefcheck.org/ Every year, Reef Check trains thousands of citizen scientist divers who volunteer to survey the health of coral reefs around the world, and rocky reef ecosystems along the entire coast of California. The programs monitor rocky reefs inside and outside of California's marine protected areas (MPAs). The results are used to improve the management of these critically important natural resources. The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA).
