Data from: Perceived duration of brief visual events is mediated by timing mechanisms at the global stages of visual processing
There is a growing body of evidence pointing to the existence of modality-specific timing mechanisms for encoding sub-second durations. For example, the duration compression effect describes how prior adaptation to a dynamic visual stimulus results in participants underestimating the duration of a sub-second test stimulus when it is presented at the adapted location. There is substantial evidence for the existence of both cortical and pre-cortical visual timing mechanisms; however, little is known about where in the processing hierarchy the cortical mechanisms are likely to be located. We carried out a series of experiments to determine whether or not timing mechanisms are to be found at the global processing level. We had participants adapt to random dot patterns that varied in their motion coherence, thus allowing us to probe the visual system at the level of motion integration. Our first experiment revealed a positive linear relationship between the motion coherence level of the adaptor stimulus and duration compression magnitude. However, increasing the motion coherence level in a stimulus also results in an increase in global speed. To test whether duration compression effects were driven by global speed or global motion, we repeated the experiment, but kept global speed fixed while varying motion coherence levels. The duration compression persisted, but the linear relationship with motion coherence was absent, suggesting that the effect was driven by adapting global speed mechanisms. Our results support previous claims that visual timing mechanisms persist at the level of global processing.
Data from: Investigating the timing of origin and evolutionary processes shaping regional species diversity: insights from simulated data and Neotropical butterfly diversification rates
Different diversification scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of extant biodiversity. However, most existing meta-analyses of time-calibrated phylogenies rely on approaches that do not quantitatively test alternative diversification processes. Here, I highlight the shortcomings of using species divergence ranks, which is a method widely used in meta-analyses. Divergence ranks consist of categorizing cladogenetic events to certain periods of time, typically to either Pleistocene or to pre-Pleistocene ages. This approach has been claimed to shed light on the origin of most extant species and the timing and dynamics of diversification in any biogeographical region. However, interpretations drawn from such method often confound two fundamental questions in macroevolutionary studies, tempo (timing of evolutionary rate shifts) and mode ("how" and "why" of speciation). By using simulated phylogenies under four diversification scenarios, constant-rate, diversity-dependence, high extinction, and high speciation rates in the Pleistocene, I showed that interpretations based on species divergence ranks might have been seriously misleading. Future meta-analyses of dated phylogenies need to be aware of the impacts of incomplete taxonomic sampling, tree topology, and divergence time uncertainties, as well as they might be benefited by including quantitative tests of alternative diversification models that acknowledge extinction and diversity dependence.

Harmony Point Chinstrap penguin GPS and Time-Depth-Recorder processed data
<p>Tracking data from Chinstrap Penguins (<em>Pygoscelis antarcticus</em>) tracked with axy-trek marine loggers in Harmony Point (Nelson Island, Maritime Antarctic Peninsula) in the breeding seasons of 2019/20 and 2021/22.</p> <p>The zip file is composed of two folders containing outputs from the R script named "GPS_TDR_processing.R", which process raw data from Axy-trek marine loggers producing 3 outputs that are within each of the folders. The outputs are: (1) 5-min resampled foraging trips (with trip ID identified), (2) dive statistics and (3) foraging trip summaries.</p> <p> </p> <p>Each file is named as the TagID, type of data (GPS or TDR), period (IB for late incubation / brooding - from late december to early january; CR for Chick-Rearing, from early to mid January) and season (2019/20 as 19 and 2021/22 as 21).</p> <p> </p> <p>GPS data is composed of the fields: Date (YYYY-mm-dd HH:MM:SS), distances, trip number and geographical coordinates in "+proj=longlat +datum=WGS84 +no_defs".</p> <p>TDR data is composed of outputs from dive statistics summarized using the "diveMove" R package. </p>
