Dataset related to the article "Activation of Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway and Human Atherosclerotic Plaque Vulnerability: an In Vitro and In Vivo Study"

<p>This record contains raw data related to the article &ldquo;Activation of Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway and Human Atherosclerotic Plaque Vulnerability: an In Vitro and In Vivo Study&quot;</p> <p>Abstract: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce nuclear factor erythroid 2&ndash;related factor 2 (Nrf2) activation as an adaptive defense mechanism, determining the synthesis of antioxidant molecules, including heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1). HO-1 protects cells against oxidative injury, degrading free heme and inhibiting ROS production. HO-1 is highly expressed in macrophages during plaque growth. Macrophages are morpho-functionally heterogeneous, and the prevalence of a specific phenotype may influence the plaque fate. This heterogeneity has also been observed in monocyte-derived macrophages(MDMs), a model of macrophages infiltrating tissue. The study aims to assess oxidative stress status and Nrf2/HO-1 axis in MDM morphotypes obtained from healthy subjects and coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, in relation to coronary plaque features evaluated in vivo by optical coherence tomography (OCT). We found that MDMs of healthy subjects exhibited a lower oxidative stress status, lower Nrf2 and HO-1 levels as compared to CAD patients. High HO-1 levels in MDMs were associated with the presence of a higher macrophage content, a thinner fibrous cap, and a ruptured plaque with thrombus formation, detected by OCT analysis. These findings suggest the presence of a relationship between in vivo plaque characteristics and in vitro MDM profile, and may help to identify patients with rupture-prone coronary plaque.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Vulnerability of six cold-water corals to sediment resuspension from bottom trawling fishing - DATASET

<p>The dataset is related to &quot;Vulnerability of six cold-water corals to sediment resuspension from bottom trawling fishing&quot; research article. The aim of the experiment was to evaluate survival, growth and physiology&nbsp;of six cold-water coral species when exposed to increased suspended sediment concentration (SSC). The treatments are labeled Control, Low SSC and High SSC. The experiment was performed at&nbsp;Institut de Ci&egrave;ncies del Mar (ICM) in Barcelona during&nbsp;9 months.&nbsp;</p> <p>The dataset consists of five sheets in an excel workbook.&nbsp;</p> <ol> <li>Scle_polypN sheet includes scleractinian species polyp numbers at the 0, 4 and 9 months since the start of the experiment.</li> <li>Scle_BW sheet&nbsp;includes&nbsp;scleractinian species buoyant weight in grams measured at 0, 4, 7 and 9 months of the start of the experiment. There are two columns at 9 month, one labeled incubation (when the coral was measured after metabolic incubation) and final (when coral was measured day before the end of the experiment).&nbsp;</li> <li>BC_Gor_Length sheet includes nubbin length data in meters&nbsp;for a black coral (BC) and gorgonian (Gor) measured at 1, 4 and 9 months from the start of the experiment. For each measure error of the scale bar is reported as well.&nbsp;</li> <li>Respiration sheet includes data collected during metabolic incubations performed at 4 and 9 months of the start of the experiment. For scleractinian species it is reported as &micro;mol O2 g-1d-1&nbsp;and for black coral and gorgonian as &micro;mol O2 cm-1d-1&nbsp;, found in the last column.</li> <li>Excretion sheet includes data collected during metabolic incubations performed at 4 and 9 months of the start of the experiment.&nbsp; For scleractinian species it is reported as &micro;mol NH4&nbsp;g-1d-1&nbsp;and for black coral and gorgonian as &micro;mol NH4 cm-1d-1&nbsp;, found in the last column.</li> </ol>
