Dataset of the study "Think globally, act locally": A glocal approach to old and new literacies for social media skills

<p>This Zenodo item contains the dataset of the study: Manca, S., Bocconi, S., &amp; Gleason, B. (2020).&nbsp;&ldquo;Think globally, act locally&rdquo;. A glocal approach to old and new literacies for social media skills. Computers &amp; Education.</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Despite the documented number of studies that investigate social media in teaching and learning settings, the topic of social media literacy is still an under-researched area. This study adopts the theoretical lens of New Literacy studies to suggest a combined perspective for investigating social media literacies. This perspective considers both social media skills that are transversal across different social media (global skills) or that pertain to a specific social media platform (local skills). It examines practices that are decontextualized (literacy as something to be acquired) or situated and context-dependent (literacy through participation). To map current research on social media skills, a systematic literature review was conducted. Analysis of 54 publications was carried out following the UNESCO DLGF framework for digital literacy competencies, and also using a critical lens based on four metaphors whereby, for learning purposes, social media are seen as a <em>tool</em>, as a <em>process</em>, as <em>collaboration</em>, and as <em>participation</em>. The results show that most of the studies consider global social media skills, while only a few examine skills sets specific to a particular social media platform. Besides, most of the identified skills concern decontextualized practices, with very few studies emphasizing the importance of fostering situated social media practices. We conclude that there is a need for more expansive theoretical elaboration in the field, and provide a number of recommendations for investigating, understanding, and designing educational curricula and activities that support the development of social media literacy.</p>

Data from: Vasohibin1, a new IRES trans-acting factor for induction of (lymph)angiogenic factors in early hypoxia

Hypoxia, a major inducer of angiogenesis, triggers major changes of gene expression at the transcriptional level. Furthermore, global protein synthesis is blocked while internal ribosome entry sites (IRES) allow specific mRNAs to be translated. Here we report the transcriptome and translatome signatures of (lymph)angiogenic genes in hypoxic HL-1 cardiomyocytes: most genes are not induced at the transcriptome-, but at the translatome level, including all IRES-containing mRNAs. Our data reveal activation of (lymph)angiogenic factor mRNA IRESs in early hypoxia. We identify vasohibin1 (VASH1) as an IRES trans-acting factor (ITAF) able to bind RNA and to activate FGF1 and VEGFD IRESs in hypoxia while it exhibits an inhibitory effect in normoxia. This suggests a generalized process of IRES-dependent induction of (lymph)angiogenic growth factors in early hypoxia, with a variable IRESome composition. IRES-dependent translation thus appears as a pivotal process to trigger new vessel formation in ischemic heart.

Vasohibin1, a new mouse cardiomyocyte IRES trans-acting factor that regulates translation in early hypoxia

Translational control thus appears as a pivotal process triggering new vessel formation in ischemic heart.

Transcription regulator ACTR contributes pathogenicity through mediating ACT toxin synthesis gene ACTS4 in Alternaria alternata

<p>Host-selective ACT toxin are critical for the pathogenesis of the citrus fungal pathogen <em>Alternaria alternata</em>. The biosynthesis of ACT toxin is mainly regulated by multiple ACT toxin genes located in the secondary metabolite gene cluster. However, the regulatory hierarchy of ACT toxin synthesis by these ACT genes have not been explored. In this study, we reported a transcription regulator <em>ACTR</em> contributes ACT toxin biosynthesis through mediating ACT toxin synthesis gene ACTS4 in <em>Alternaria alternata.</em> We generated <em>ACTR</em>-disrupted and -silenced mutants in the tangerine pathotype of <em>A. alternata.</em> Phenotype analysis showed that the <em>ACTR</em> mutants displayed a significant loss of ACT toxin production and a decreased virulence on citrus leaves whereas the vegetative growth and sporulation were not affected, indicating an essential role of <em>ACTR</em> in both ACT toxin biosynthesis and pathogenicity. To elucidate the transcription network of ACTR, we performed RNA-Seq experiments on wild-type and <em>ACTR</em> null mutant and identified genes that were differentially expressed between two genotypes. Transcriptome profiling and RT-qPCR analysis demonstrated that the ACT toxin biosynthetic gene <em>ACTS4</em> is down-regulated in<em> ACTR </em>mutant<em>.</em> We generated <em>ACTS4 </em>knock-down mutant and found that the pathogenicity of <em>ACTS4</em> mutant was severely impaired. Interestingly, both <em>ACTR</em> and <em>ACTS4</em> are not involved in the response to different abiotic stresses including oxidative stress, salt stress, cell-wall disrupting regents, and Cu<sup>2+</sup>, indicating the function of these two genes is highly specific. In conclusion, our results highlight the important regulatory role of <em>ACTR</em> in ACT toxin biosynthesis through mediating ACT toxin synthesis gene ACTS4 and underline the essential role of in the tangerine pathotype of <em>A. alternata</em>.</p>

Data from: Microevolutionary selection dynamics acting on immune genes of the green veined white butterfly, Pieris napi

Insects rely on their innate immune system to successfully mediate complex interactions with their microbiota, as well as the microbes present in the environment. Previous work has shown that components of the canonical immune gene repertoire evolve rapidly and have evolutionary characteristics originating from interactions with fast-evolving microorganisms. Although these interactions are likely to vary among populations, there is a poor understanding of the microevolutionary dynamics of immune genes, especially in non-Dipteran insects. Here we use the full set of canonical insect immune genes to investigate microevolutionary dynamics acting on these genes between and among populations by comparing three allopatric populations of the Green Veined White butterfly, Pieris napi (Lepidoptera, Pieridae). Immune genes showed increased genetic diversity compared to genes from the rest of the genome and various functional categories exhibited different types of signatures of selection, at different evolutionary scales, presenting a complex pattern of selection dynamics. Signatures of balancing selection were identified in 10 genes, and 17 genes appear to be under positive selection. Genes involved with the cellular arm of the immune response as well as the Toll pathway appear to be enriched among our outlier loci, regardless of functional category. This suggests that the targets of selection might focus upon an entire pathway, more than on functional subsets across pathways. Our microevolutionary results are similar to previously observed macroevolutionary patterns from diverse taxa, suggesting that either the immune system is robust to dramatic differences in life history and microbial communities, or that diverse microbes exert similar selection pressures.

Immigrant males' memory acts to reduce ranging overlap and mating competition in wild baboons

<p>Mechanistic models suggest that information acquired by animals ("knowledge") could shape home range patterns and dynamics, and how neighbours share space. In social species this would suggest that immigrants could bring new knowledge into social groups, potentially affecting the dynamics of home range overlap. We tested this "immigrant knowledge hypothesis" in a wild population of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus). We used data collected between 2005 and 2013 on two neighbouring troops in Namibia, comprising GPS records of daily ranges, male natal origins, daily females' reproductive status, and a satellite index of vegetation growth. We found that when the ratio of fertile females to adult males in the focal troop increased (i.e. increasing inter-troop mating competition costs for focal troop males), the focal troop tended to overlap less with a neighbouring troop's home range only when the alpha male had immigrated from that neighbouring troop and so was "knowledgeable" about its home range. When the alpha male was "not knowledgeable" the reverse was observed, with troops showing greater overlap, most likely reflecting an influence of fertile females on ranging patterns. Our findings support the immigrant knowledge hypothesis of group ranging behaviour, and suggest that dispersal and spatial memory may sometimes act to increase rather than decrease spatial segregation between groups. Very few previous studies have reported an effect of mating competition on ranging dynamics in social species, perhaps because previous studies did not consider divergent adaptive interest among group members and how they can be solved through collective-decision processes.</p>

Integrating REBT and ACT : An intervention study for managing academic self-handicapping behaviour among young adults

<p>The data consists of pre and post interventions scores of 25 participants who were selected based on their ratings on&nbsp;Academic self -handicapping scale (Geetika &amp; Gupta, 2020) . Thirteen participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group which was exposed to 8 hours of&nbsp;intervention that combined REBT and ACT. Twelve participants were randomly assigned&nbsp;to the control group and did not receive any intervention. The pre-intervention scores on Academic self -handicapping scale (Geetika &amp; Gupta, 2020) were assessed at the beginning of the intervention and at two weeks since the beginning of the intervention. Sub scale scores on Behavioural and Claimed self -handicapping were recorded and overall score by adding the two were also obtained.&nbsp;</p>

Different functional networks underlying human walking with pulling force fields acting in forward or backward directions

<p><span>Walking with pulling force fields acting at the body center of mass (in </span><span>the </span><span>forward or backward directions) is compatible with inclined walking and is used in clinical practice for gait training. From the perspective of known differences in the motor strategies that underlie walking with the respective force fields, the present study elucidated whether the adaptation acquired by walking on a split-belt treadmill with either one of the force fields affects subsequent walking in other directions. Walking with the force field induced an adaptive and de-adaptive behavior of the subjects</span><span>, with the aspect evident </span><span>in the anterior breaking and posterior propulsive impulses of the ground reaction force as parameters. In the parameters, </span><span>the </span><span>adaptation acquired during walking with </span><span>a force field </span><span>acting in one direction was transferred to that in </span><span>the opposite direction only partially. </span><span>Furthermore, </span><span>the adaptation that occurred </span><span>while walking in </span><span>a force field </span><span>in one direction was rarely washed out by subsequent walking in </span><span>a force field </span><span>in </span><span>the opposite direction</span> <span>and thus was maintained independently of the other</span><span>. These results demonstrated possible independence in the neural functional networks capable of controlling walking in each movement task with </span><span>an opposing force field</span><span>.</span></p>
