Data from: Sustainability management of short-lived freshwater fish in human-altered ecosystems should focus on adult survival

Fish populations globally are susceptible to endangerment through exploitation and habitat loss. We present theoretical simulations to explore how reduced adult survival (age truncation) might affect short-lived freshwater fish species in human-altered contemporary environments. Our simulations evaluate two hypothetical "average fish" and five example fish species of age 1 or age 2 maturity. From a population equilibrium baseline representing a natural, unaltered environment we impose systematic reductions in adult survival and quantify how age truncation affects the causes of variation in population growth rate. We estimate the relative contributions to population growth rate arising from simulated temporal variation in age-specific vital rates and population structure. At equilibrium and irrespective of example species, population structure (first adult age class) and survival probability of the first two adult age classes are the most important determinants of population growth. As adult survival decreases, the first reproductive age class becomes increasingly important to variation in population growth. All simulated examples show the same general pattern of change with age truncation as known for exploited, longer-lived fish species in marine and freshwater environments. This implies age truncation is a general potential concern for fish biodiversity across life history strategies and ecosystems. Managers of short-lived, freshwater fishes in contemporary environments often focus on supporting reproduction to ensure population persistence. However, a strong focus on water management to support reproduction may reduce adult survival. Sustainability management needs a focus on mitigating adult mortality in human-altered ecosystems. A watershed spatial extent embracing land and water uses may be necessary to identify and mitigate causes of age truncation in freshwater species. Achieving higher adult survival will require paradigm transformations in society and government about water management priorities.

Data from: Early-life disease exposure and associations with adult survival, cause of death, and reproductive success in preindustrial humans
A leading hypothesis proposes that increased human life span since 1850 has resulted from decreased exposure to childhood infections, which has reduced chronic inflammation and later-life mortality rates, particularly from cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer. Early-life cohort mortality rate often predicts later-life survival in humans, but such associations could arise from factors other than disease exposure. Additionally, the impact of early-life disease exposure on reproduction remains unknown, and thus previous work ignores a major component of fitness through which selection acts upon life-history strategy. We collected data from seven 18th- and 19th-century Finnish populations experiencing naturally varying mortality and fertility levels. We quantified early-life disease exposure as the detrended child mortality rate from infectious diseases during an individual's first 5 y, controlling for important social factors. We found no support for an association between early-life disease exposure and all-cause mortality risk after age 15 or 50. We also found no link between early-life disease exposure and probability of death specifically from cardiovascular disease, stroke, or cancer. Independent of survival, there was no evidence to support associations between early-life disease exposure and any of several aspects of reproductive performance, including lifetime reproductive success and age at first birth, in either males or females. Our results do not support the prevailing assertion that exposure to infectious diseases in early life has long-lasting associations with later-life all-cause mortality risk or mortality putatively linked to chronic inflammation. Variation in adulthood conditions could therefore be the most likely source of recent increases in adult life span.

Cell Atlas at Single-Nuclei Resolution of the Adult Human Adrenal Gland and Adrenocortical Adenomas

Abstract

The human adrenal glands are highly dynamic endocrine organs that are involved in the secretion of various hormones such as steroids and catecholamines. Here we present a single-nuclei and spatial transcriptomic analysis of healthy adult human adrenal glands to provide a complete adrenal gland atlas. With this, we show how such an atlas can be taken advantage when studying adrenocortical diseases, such as adrenocortical adenomas (ACA). Using nornal adrenal as reference, we showed a high intra-tumoural heterogeneity in the single-nuclei transcriptome of ACA, revealing the presence of specific cell populations associated with cortisol secretion and genetic background.

Data content

This dataset contains the two Visium replicates (NAG-7A and NAG-7B) processed using Space Ranger (spaceranger-1.0.0).

Human vocalization corpus: recordings of infant-directed and adult-directed speech and song in 21 societies

This repository contains a corpus of 1615 audio recordings of speech and song collected in 21 societies, first reported in Moser et al. (2020; bioRxiv) and later published in Hilton & Moser et al. (2022; Nature Human Behaviour). For assistance using any of this, contact Cody Moser (cmoser2@ucmerced.edu), Courtney Hilton (courtney.hilton@auckland.ac.nz), and Samuel Mehr (mehr@hey.com).

Two versions of the audio are included: raw audio (`IDS-corpus-raw.zip`) and audio that was edited to prepare the recordings for automatic acoustic feature extraction (`IDS-corpus-edited.zip`). `IDS-textGrids.zip` contains annotation files from Praat's silence detection method, which were manually reviewed for accuracy. These files are used with the audio extraction scripts associated with the project (see code linked in paper) to build the edited audio files.

`IDS-fieldsites.csv` contains some fieldsite-level metadata; additional metadata is in the Supplementary Information of the paper.

In the two .zip archives, filenames have the format XXXYYZ.wav, where "XXX" is a fieldsite code, "YY" is a participant number, and "Z" is a vocalization type.

Fieldsite codes are:

MBE: Mbendjele BaYaka
HAD: Hadza
NYA: Nyangatom
TOP: Toposa
BEJ: Beijing
JEN: Jenu Kurubas
MEN: Mentawai Islanders
KRA: Krakow
LIM: Rural Poland
TUR: Turku
USD: San Diego
TOR: Toronto
VAN: Tannese Vanuatuans
PNG: Enga
WEL: Wellington
ARA: Arawak
TSI: Tsimane
SPA: Sápara & Achuar
QUE: Quechua
ACO: Afrocolombians
MES: Colombian Mestizos

Participant numbers are padded integers, starting with 01, and are unique within fieldsites.

Vocalization types are:

A: infant-directed song
B: infant-directed speech
C: adult-directed song
D: adult-directed speech

In a few cases, participants vocalized in a different language than was expected, given the primary language of their fieldsite (e.g., when the participant was multilingual, or if they sang a song that contains multiple languages, as in The Beatles' "Michelle"). The file `IDS-unexpectedLanguages.csv` at https://github.com/themusiclab/infant-speech-song/blob/main/data/IDS-unexpectedLanguages.csv contains an inventory of these examples from the English-speaking fieldsites. This issue only affects a small minority of the recordings, as it was typically avoided by the researchers collecting the recordings.
