Data from: Acoustically advertising male harbour seals in southeast Alaska do not make biologically relevant acoustic adjustments in the presence of vessel noise

Aquatically breeding harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) males use underwater vocalizations during the breeding season to establish underwater territories, defend territories against intruder males, and possibly to attract females. Vessel noise overlaps in frequency with these vocalizations and could negatively impact breeding success by limiting communication space. In this study we investigated whether harbour seals employed anti-masking strategies to maintain communication in the presence of vessel noise in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Harbour seals in this location did not sufficiently adjust source levels or acoustic parameters of vocalizations to compensate for acoustic masking. Instead, for every 1 dB increase in ambient noise, signal excess decreased by 0.84 dB, indicating a reduction in communication space when vessels passed. We suggest that harbour seals may already be acoustically advertising at or near a biologically maximal sound level, and therefore lack the ability to increase call amplitude to adjust to changes in their acoustic environment. This may have significant implications for this aquatically breeding pinniped, particularly for populations in high noise regions.

Dataset for article 'How users' knowledge of advertisements influences their viewing and selection behaviour in search engines'

<p>This study examines how users&rsquo; understanding of search-based advertising influences search results viewing behaviour the PC and the smartphone. To investigate this, we used a mix of methods consisting of interview, eye-tracking experiment and questionnaire with n=100 subjects. We show that participants with a low level of knowledge on search advertising are more likely to click on ads than subjects with a high level of knowledge. Moreover, subjects with little knowledge show less willingness to scroll down to the organic results. Regarding the device, there are significant differences in viewing behaviour. These can be attributed to the influence of the direct visibility of search results on both devices tested. We recommend, depending on the device, that advertisers ensure their ads appear in the instantly visible area (&quot;above the fold&quot;). Future studies should investigate the motivations of searchers when clicking on ads.</p>

Political Advertising on Facebook During the 2022 Australian Federal Election

<p>This repository contains data on political advertisements posted on Facebook and Instagram during the three months leading up to the 2022 Australian federal election. The data was collected using the Meta Ad Library API and provides insights into digital political campaigning strategies in Australia.</p> <h2>Contents</h2> <p>The repository includes the following files:</p> <ul> <li><code>datasheet.txt</code>: A detailed datasheet following the guidelines of Gebru et al. My last publication on Zenodo ten days ago has 37 views and 43 downloads.</p> <p>This five-page poster article further improves the Elementary Scientist Exam and the six other Zenodo-published articles, including the elementary list with the Unambiguous 1000 Elementary Terms, Definitions, and Descriptions in Elementary Science, Courtrooms, and Schools. (Proven to have a very high view-to-download ratio with 317 views and 243 downloads in six months after publication. A glitch (?) at CERN probably causes a 0 view 0 download error.) The undisputed reason for the improvement follows from the indisputably best-practice correct definition of science.</p> <p>A decent systematic trial and error search for all the laws of everything and an all-inclusive Bildung in Education Permanente.</p> <p>This has been solved and published in mentioned publications as One Law of Nature makes One Law of Human Nature. These two laws elevate all sciences to the wordiness of an exact science. Mind, that this definition can be reduced by redefining certain terms. It&rsquo;s a never-ending process akin to growing wise oak of the tree-like tower of science continuously broadening and improving its base. This has been successfully done for the first time in 5000 years.</p> <p>Mathematics must be made to fit Nature and not the other way around.</p> <p>Science proper per definition demands all-inclusive Bildung. Bildung requires marketing, advertisement, and sales of science proper. To that end please note this selection of thumbnails as posters advertising the classes explaining the model in chunks of nigh 4-minutes.</p>

Data for: Bullying as an advertisement of social dominance in common waxbills

<p><span>Bullying consists of preferentially attacking individuals lowest in the dominance hierarchy, and its functions are unclear because the most subordinate individuals do not pose social challenges to the aggressor. Instead, conflict is expected mostly between individuals of similar dominance rank or socially-distant (i.e., weakly associated), among whom dominance relationships may not be well established. A possible function of bullying is that it may be used as a low-risk strategy of showing-off dominance to relevant third parties. To study this hypothesis, we monitored aggressions during feeding, the composition of audiences, dominance hierarchy and social network of common waxbills (<em>Estrilda astrild</em>) in an open-air mesocosm, and tested 1- whether their aggressions show a pattern of bullying, and 2- whether audience effects influence aggressiveness. Waxbills showed bullying, most often attacking the lowest-ranking individuals rather than socially-distant individuals or those of similar dominance rank, and aggressions increased when the audience included socially-distant individuals, indicating a signalling function of bullying. Showing-off dominance in the presence of socially-distant individuals may be a strategy to manage dominance hierarchies, avoiding direct fights with potentially dangerous opponents in the audience. We suggest that bullying is a safe manner of managing dominance hierarchies, by signalling dominance status to potential opponents.</span></p>

Quality of advertisements for prescription drugs in family practice medical journals published in Australia, Canada, and the United States with different regulatory controls: a cross-sectional study

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>OBJECTIVE: </b>To assess if different forms of regulation lead to differences in the quality of journal advertisements.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>DESIGN: </b>Cross-sectional study.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>PARTICIPANTS: </b>Thirty advertisements from family practice journals published from 2013-2015 were extracted for three countries with distinct regulatory pharmaceutical promotion systems: Australia, Canada, and the United States (US). </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: </b>Advertisements under each regulatory system were compared concerning three domains: information included in the advertisement, references to scientific evidence, and pictorial appeals and portrayals. An overall ranking for advertisement quality among countries was determined using the first two domains as the information assessed has been associated with more appropriate prescribing. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>RESULTS: </b>Advertisements varied significantly for number of claims with quantitative benefit (Australia: 0.0 (0.0-3.0); Canada: 0.0 (0.0-5.0); US: 1.0 (0.0-6.0); p=0.01); statistical method used in reporting benefit (RRR, ARR, and NNT) (Australia: 6.7%, n=2; Canada: 10.0%, n=3; US: 36.6%, n=11; p=0.02); mention of adverse effects, warnings, or contraindications (Australia: 13.3%, n=4; Canada: 23.3%, n=7; US: 53.3%, n=16; p=0.002); equal prominence between safety and benefit information (Australia: 25.0%, n=1; Canada: 28.6%, n=2; US: 75.0%, n=12; p=0.04); and methodologic quality of references score (Australia: 0.4150 (0.25-0.70); Canada: 0.25 (0.00-0.63); US: 0.25 (0.00-0.75); p&lt;0.001). The US ranked first, Canada second, and Australia third for overall quality of journal advertisements. Significant differences for humor appeals (Australia: 3.3%, n=1; Canada: 13.3%, n=4; US: 26.7%, n=8; p=0.04), positive emotional appeals (Australia: 26.7%, n=8; Canada: 60.0%, n=18; US: 50.0%, n=15; p=0.03), social approval portrayals (Australia: 0.0%, n=0; Canada: 0.0%, n=0; US: 10.0%, n=3; p=0.04), and lifestyle or work portrayals (Australia: 43.3%, n=13; Canada: 50.0%, n=15; US: 76.7%, n=23; p=0.02) were found among countries.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>CONCLUSIONS:</b> <a name="_Hlk34742358">Different regulatory systems influence journal advertisement quality concerning all measured domains. </a>However, differences may also be attributed to other regulatory, legal, cultural, or health system factors unique to each country.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
