Invasion of the coccinellid community associated with a tropical annual agroecosystem
<p>To examine the potential effect of an invasive coccinellid (Harmonia axyridis) on the resident community of coccinellids, we sampled predators and prey associated with organic Brassica oleracea production on 6 farms during 2 years in the Distrito Federal, Brasil and conducted a food acceptability trial to estimate niche breadth and overlap among the coccinellids. The data are in two files. The first is a community sample data set, with columns describing the sample characteristics (year, farm, sample period) and the summed counts of all macroinvertebrates found on 30 plants at each sample period, farm and year. There are 120 samples and 36 populations of macroinvertebrates in the data set. The second data set is the acceptability of 4 aphid prey species to 3 stages of 4 species of coccinellids. There are 15 replicates of the 48 treatments. The data also include the biomass of the predators at the end of the experiment. Farms have been de-identified, and the data can be used by anyone without any legal or ethical considerations. The authors request that anyone who reuses the data provide and acknowledgement of this in any publication as well as a citation to the originating study.</p>
The ecological memory of fish assemblages in agroecosystems with different history of landscape changes
<p>Here, we presented the data (local, past and response) and R code (models_Zeni et al.) we used to investigate the relationship between past land use changes and instream habitat (explanatory variables) and fish biodiversity patterns (response variables) in streams from different regions in Brazil. </p>
Multiple ecosystem service synergies and landscape-mediation of biodiversity within urban agroecosystems
<p>Ecosystem services are essential for human well-being, especially in urban areas where 60% of the global population will live by 2030. While urban habitats have the potential to support biodiversity and ecosystem services, few studies have quantified the impact of local and landscape management across a diverse suite of services. We leverage five years of data (>5,000 observations) across a network of urban gardens to determine the drivers of biodiversity and ecosystem service trade-offs and synergies. We found multiple synergies and few trade-offs, contrasting previous assumptions that food production is at odds with biodiversity. Furthermore, we show that landscape-level natural habitat cover interacts with local management to mediate services provided by mobile animals, specifically pest control and pollination. By quantifying the factors that support a diverse suite of ecosystem services, we highlight the critical role of garden management and urban planning for optimizing biodiversity and human benefit.</p>
Planted pollinator habitat in agroecosystems: How does the pollinator community respond?
<p>Pollinators are important both ecologically and economically. Nonetheless, documented pollinator population decline threatens ecosystem functioning and human well-being. In response, conservation methods such as augmented pollinator habitat are becoming popular tools to combat pollinator losses. While previous research has shown added habitat can benefit bee communities, there are still aspects of the habitat implementation that require further research, particularly how this will impact bee communities in real-world settings beyond researcher-led efforts. In our study, we use a 2016 initiative mandating the planting of pollinator habitat on research stations across North Carolina, United States to act as an outdoor laboratory to investigate this exact question. From 2016 to 2018, we found significant increases in bee abundance and diversity. However, these increases depended on the quality of habitat, with areas of higher flower cover and diversity supporting larger, more diverse bee communities. Although the habitats positively supported bee communities, we found that resources within the habitats were lower later in the sampling season, highlighting the need of developing seed mixes that include late-season resources. Weedy plants were documented to establish within the habitats, demonstrating the need for regular upkeep and maintenance of pollinator habitat in order to appropriately support bee communities. It is likely that planting pollinator habitat will not be a one-size-fits-all conservation solution, as bee species can respond differently to some habitat characteristics. Future long-term studies on pollinators will be important as natural fluctuations in bee populations may limit findings and many knowledge gaps on native bees still persist.</p>

Data from: The fate of nitrogen during agricultural intensification in East Africa: nitrogen budgets in contrasting agroecosystems
<p>The intensification of agricultural systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is necessary to reduce poverty and improve food security but requires increased nutrient applications to smallholder systems. To avoid the negative consequences of intensification that result from many large-scale agricultural systems (e.g., eutrophication), we must better understand how diverse soil systems in SSA will respond to increased fertilizer applications. We tracked nitrogen (N) inputs and outputs in fertilizer trials at two maize (Zea mays)-agroecological regions of contrasting soil type. We measured maize biomass, grain yields, N leaching, and N gaseous losses from a clayey soil in Yala, Kenya, and a sandy soil in Tumbi, Tanzania, with application rates of 0, 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha<sup>-1</sup> yr<sup>‑1</sup> over multiple years. Using measurements of NO, N<sub>2</sub>O, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>, biomass N, and an <sup>15</sup>N enrichment experiment, we show that N budgets in Yala were nearly always negative, meaning more N was exported in yields or lost from the system than was added in fertilizer. In Tumbi, however, N budgets were negative at lower fertilizer levels (0 and 50 kg N ha<sup>-1</sup>), but positive at higher fertilizer levels (75 and 200 kg N ha<sup>-1</sup>). At both sites, most of the N was lost through maize biomass/grain removal and N leaching (over 96% of total losses). Gas losses were a minor component of N budgets. These results highlight the importance of tailoring fertilizer recommendations to a farm's specific soil and climatic conditions. However, on these two contrasting sites, fertilizer additions at or below 50 kg N ha<sup>-1</sup> do not lead to major losses of N (via gaseous or leaching) and may be recommended at a range of sites across SSA soils in maize agroecosystems.</p>
