High-resolution neutron imaging: a new approach to characterize water in anodic aluminum oxides_data
<p>In this document, we share the raw data related to the Al oxides and hydroxide reference samples collected for the manuscript entitled "High-resolution neutron imaging: a new approach to characterize water in anodic aluminum oxides". More specifically, the following data can be found:</p> <ul> <li>high-resolution neutron imaging raw data for Al oxides (C-sapphire, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> sintered, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> plasma sprayed and Anodisc 13 membrane) and hydroxide (Al(OH)<sub>3</sub> gibbsite)</li> <li>the corresponding XRD diffractograms.</li> </ul>
Synthesis of a novel aluminum salt of nitrogen-containing alkylphosphinate with high char formation to flame retard acrylonitrile –butadiene–styrene
<p>A novel nitrogen-containing alkylphosphinate salt----aluminum β-(p-nitrobenzamide) ethyl methyl phosphinate (AlNP) was synthesized and used to flame retard acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS). The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, <sup>1</sup>H, <sup>13</sup>C and <sup>31</sup>P nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy (XRF) were applied to characterize the structure and composition of products. The flame retardancy performance, thermal properties and mechanical strength of the ABS/AlNP with respect to AlNP loading were investigated. AlNP was stable before 330 <sup>o</sup>C and decomposed very slowly with residues high up to 56.1 % at 700<sup> o</sup>C. Adding 25-30 wt% of AlNP alone can make ABS to pass V0 rating in the vertical burning tests (UL 94). The results according to the micro combustion calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis showed that AlNP can depress the heating release and retard the thermal degradation of the ABS. Scanning electron microscopy observation for the residues from LOI test indicated that AlNP formed the condensed and tough residues layer during combustion; XRF analysis showed that the residues contained phosphorus and aluminum element and nitrogen element was not detected. The compact phosphorus/aluminium-rich substance acted as a barrier to enhance flame-retardant properties of the ABS.</p>

Data from: Repeat variants for the SbMATE transporter protect sorghum roots from aluminum toxicity by transcriptional interplay in cis and trans
Acidic soils, where aluminum (Al) toxicity is a major agricultural constraint, are globally widespread and are prevalent in developing countries. In sorghum, the root citrate transporter SbMATE confers Al tolerance by protecting root apices from toxic Al3+, but can exhibit reduced expression when introgressed into different lines. We show that allele-specific SbMATE transactivation occurs and is caused by factors located away from SbMATE. Using expression-QTL mapping and -GWAS, we establish that SbMATE transcription is controlled in a bipartite fashion, primarily in cis but also in trans. Multi-allelic promoter transactivation and ChIP analyses demonstrated that intermolecular effects on SbMATE expression arise from a WRKY and a zinc finger-DHHC transcription factor (TF) that bind to and trans-activate the SbMATE promoter. A haplotype analysis in sorghum RILs indicate that the TFs influence SbMATE expression and Al tolerance. Variation in SbMATE expression likely results from changes in tandemly repeated cis sequences flanking a transposable element (MITE) insertion in the SbMATE promoter, which are recognized by the Al3+-responsive TFs. According to our model, repeat expansion in Al-tolerant genotypes increases TF recruitment and, hence, SbMATE expression, which is, in turn, lower in Al-sensitive genetic backgrounds due to lower TF expression and fewer binding sites. We thus show that even dominant cis regulation of an agronomically-important gene can be subjected to precise intermolecular fine-tuning. These concerted cis/trans interactions, which allow the plant to sense and respond to environmental cues, such as Al3+ toxicity, can now be used to increase yields and food security on acidic soils.
Data from: Retention of riveted aluminum leg bands by wild turkeys
No loss of marks is a critical assumption of mark-recapture models so they provide unbiased estimates of population parameters. We double-banded male and female wild turkeys with aluminum rivet bands and estimated the probability that a bird would be recovered with both bands <1-225 weeks since banding ( = 51.2 weeks, SD = 44.0). We found that 100% of females (n = 37) were recovered with both bands. For males, we recovered 6 of 188 turkeys missing a rivet band for a retention probability of 0.984 (95% CI = 0.96-0.99). If male turkeys are double-banded with rivet bands the probability of recovering a turkey without any marks is <0.001. We failed to detect a change in band retention over time or differences between adults and juveniles. Given the low cost and high retention rates of rivet aluminum bands, we believe they are an effective marking technique for wild turkeys and, for most studies, will minimize any concern about the assumption that marks are not lost.

Chemistry and Mass Density of Aluminum Hydroxide Gel in Eco- Cements by Ptychographic X‑ray Computed Tomography
<p>Raw data for: Chemistry and Mass Density of Aluminum Hydroxide Gel in Eco- Cements by Ptychographic X‑ray Computed Tomography </p> <p>doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcc.6b10048</p> <p> </p> <p>Eco-cements are a desirable alternative to ordinary Portland cements because of their lower CO<sub>2</sub> footprints. Ye'elimite-based eco-cements are attracting a lot of interest but most of them exhibit relatively poor mechanical properties. Understanding the reasons for the low performances requires the characterization of features such as mass density of the hydrated mineralogical phases, including the amorphous gel, on the sub-micrometer scale which is very challenging. Here we use ptychographic X-ray computed tomography to provide 3D mass density and attenuation coefficient distributions of eco-cement pastes with an isotropic resolution close to 100 nm allowing to distinguish between mineralogical phases with very similar contrast. In combination with laboratory techniques such as the Rietveld method, <sup>27</sup>Al MAS-NMR and electron microscopies, we report compositions and densities of key components. The ettringite and gel volume distributions have been mapped out in the segmented tomograms. Moreover, we discriminate between an aluminum hydroxide gel and calcium aluminum monosulfate, which have close electron density values. Specifically, the composition and mass density of two aluminum hydroxide gels have been determined: (CaO)<sub>0.04</sub>Al(OH)<sub>3</sub>·2.3H2O with 1.48(3) g∙cm<sup>-3</sup> and (CaO)<sub>0.12</sub>Al(OH)<sub>3</sub> with 2.05(3) g∙cm<sup>-3</sup>, which was a long standing challenge.</p>
