One-Step Grown Carbonaceous Germanium Nanowires and Their Application as Highly Efficient Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

<p>Developing a simple, cheap, and scalable synthetic method for the fabrication of functional nanomaterials is crucial. Carbon-based nanowire nanocomposites could play a key role in integrating group IV semiconducting nanomaterials as anodes into Li-ion batteries. Here, we report a very simple, one-pot solvothermal-like growth of carbonaceous germanium (C-Ge) nanowires in a supercritical solvent. C-Ge nanowires are grown just by heating (380&ndash;490 &deg;C) a commercially sourced Ge precursor, diphenylgermane (DPG), in supercritical toluene, without any external catalysts or surfactants. The self-seeded nanowires are highly crystalline and very thin, with an average diameter between 11 and 19 nm. The amorphous carbonaceous layer coating on Ge nanowires is formed from the polymerization and condensation of light carbon compounds generated from the decomposition of DPG during the growth process. These carbonaceous Ge nanowires demonstrate impressive electrochemical performance as an anode material for Li-ion batteries with high specific charge values (&gt;1200 mAh g&ndash;1&nbsp;after 500 cycles), greater than most of the previously reported for other &ldquo;binder-free&rdquo; Ge nanowire anode materials, and exceptionally stable capacity retention. The high specific charge values and impressively stable capacity are due to the unique morphology and composition of the nanowires.</p>

Data from: The effect of ethylene glycol on pore arrangement of anodic aluminum oxide prepared by hard anodization

The influence of ethylene glycol (EG) addition on pore self-ordering process in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes prepared by hard anodization (HA) was investigated. It was illustrated that EG has a substantial effect on the pore arrangement of AAO, which revealed that a smaller pore size can be obtained as EG concentration reaching 20 wt% in aqueous electrolyte. The number of estimated defects of AAO increase significantly with additive EG concentration at 50 wt%. Excellent ordering pore was realized when the samples were anodized in the 30 wt%-EG-containing aqueous electrolyte.electrolyte. The number of estimated defects of AAO increases significantly upon the added EG concentration reaching 50wt%. Excellent ordering pore was achieved when the samples were anodized in a 30wt%-EG-containing aqueous electrolyte.

Data from: Effect of Hf-doping on electrochemical performance of anatase TiO2 as an anode material for lithium storage

Hafnium-doped titania (Hf/Ti = 0.01; 0.03; 0.05) had been facilely synthesized via a template sol-gel method on carbon fiber. Physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller measurements. It was confirmed that Hf4+ substitute in the Ti4+ sites, forming Ti1–xHfxO2 (x = 0.01; 0.03; 0.05) solid solutions with an anatase crystal structure. The Ti1–xHfxO2 materials are hollow microtubes (length of 10–100 μm, outer diameter of 1–5 μm) composed of nanoparticles (average size of 15–20 nm) with surface area of 80–90 m2 g–1 and pore volume of 0.294–0.372 cm3 g–1. The effect of hafnium ions incorporation on electrochemical behavior of anatase TiO2 as Li-ion battery anode was investigated by galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was established that Ti0.95Hf0.05O2 shows significantly higher reversibility (154.2 mAh g–1) after 35-fold cycling at C/10 rate in comparison with undoped titania (55.9 mAh g–1). The better performance offered by Hf4+ substitution of the Ti4+ into anatase TiO2 mainly results from more open crystal structure, which has been achieved via the difference in ionic radius values of Ti4+ (0.604 Å) and Hf4+ (0.71 Å). The obtained results are in a strong accordance with ones for anatase TiO2 doped via Zr4+ (0.72 Å) published earlier. Furthermore, improved electrical conductivity of Hf-doped anatase TiO2 materials due to charge redistribution in the lattice and enhanced interfacial lithium storage due to increased surface area directly depending on Hf/Ti atomic ratio have beneficial effect on electrochemical properties.

Room-Temperature Anode-Less All-Solid-State Batteries via the Conversion Reaction of Metal Fluorides

<p>All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) that employ anode-less electrodes have drawn attention from across the battery community because they offer competitive energy densities and a markedly improved cycle life. Nevertheless, the composite matrices of anode-less electrodes impose a substantial barrier for lithium-ion diffusion and inhibit operation at room temperature. To overcome this drawback, here, the conversion reaction of metal fluorides is exploited because metallic nanodomains formed during this reaction induce an alloying reaction with lithium ions for uniform and sustainable lithium (de)plating. Lithium fluoride (LiF), another product of the conversion reaction, prevents the agglomeration of the metallic nanodomains and also protects the electrode from fatal lithium dendrite growth. A systematic analysis identifies silver (I) fluoride (AgF) as the most suitable metal fluoride because the silver nanodomains can accommodate the solid-solution mechanism with a low nucleation overpotential. AgF-based full cells attain reliable cycling at 25 &deg;C even with an exceptionally high areal capacity of 9.7 mAh cm&minus;2&nbsp;(areal loading of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2&nbsp;= 50&nbsp;mg cm&ndash;2). These results offer useful insights into designing materials for anode-less electrodes for sulfide-based ASSBs.</p>
