Coral connections within an atoll reef system underlie reef resilience and persistence

This study investigates the coral reef connectivity a coral reef atoll using fine-scale bio-physical model along with network analysis.

Relative phase between tidal and solar cycles influences the heating of a coral atoll lagoon

The residence time of water within reef-lagoon systems is of first-order importance to biogeochemical cycles and reef ecosystem functions. Circulation, mixing, and water renewal within these systems is highly dependent upon the geometry of the reef as well as wave, tide, and wind forcing. We are motivated to understand the physical driving a recent warming event as well as observed hypoxia-related fish kills and seagrass dieoff events in Dongsha Atoll lagoon, a 28 km wide coral atoll in the South China Sea. Though extensive work has been done on hypoxia events in temperate coastal systems, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the dynamics of these events in shallow tropical waters. Hydrographic observations were collected in summer 2019 to examine circulation and ocean-lagoon exchange in Dongsha Atoll lagoon. We construct a heat budget for the Dongsha Atoll lagoon to understand the physical processes governing lagoon circulation and ocean-lagoon exchange. We examine the influence of tides, winds, waves, advective exchange, and surface heating on lagoon heating and flushing time. Results show that surface heat fluxes drive rapid heating of the lagoon by approximately 1.5°C over the 22 day study period. Advective transport over the reef flat from tide- and wave-driven flows is an important component of oceanlagoon exchange that is balanced by a net outflow through the channels on subtidal timescales. Specifically, a near phase-locked interaction between diurnal solar forcing and near-diurnal tidal exchange drives persistent advective cooling over the reef flat. Estimated flushing times for the Dongsha Atoll lagoon range from 2.7 to 3.2 days for spring and neap tide, respectively.

Data from: Seabird presence and seasonality influence nutrient dynamics of atoll habitats

In this study, we investigate nutrient dynamics linked to seabird presence and seasonality. We compare seabird colonies of different taxa nesting on separate islands of Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles. We first quantify guano nutrient input and guano nitrogen isotopes for each seabird species. We assess the transfer of seabird-derived nutrients in terrestrial and marine habitats by comparing nitrogen isotope values in soil, plants, and seagrass on each seabird island and a control island, during the wet and dry seasons. We then assess the influence of seabirds by comparing nutrient levels in soil, plants, and seagrass on each seabird island and a control island, during the wet and dry seasons. For plants and seagrass, we also assess and compare nutrient ratios and carbon stable isotope ratios on each seabird island and a control island, during the wet and dry seasons.

Spatial Distribution and Habitat Usage of Coryphopterus personatus and C. hyalinus in Turneffe Atoll, Belize

Data used to develop 3D models of coral reefs using structure-from-motion photogrammetry. The data used to generate photogrammetry models are pictures of the reef from ~1 m above the substratum and coordinates of ground control points for each of twelve distinct ~20 m x 10 m reef areas. The photogrammetry workflow to create the digital models included photo alignment, followed by geometry building, and lastly texture building using Agisoft Pro. Additionally included are the orthomosaics and digital elevation models derived from the 3D models and training data used to build a classification algorithm to classify reef vs sand benthic types using the site orthomosaics. Finally, the location and sizes of mixed shoals of Coryphopterus personatus and Coryphopterus hyalinus are included. All data were collected from Turneffe Atoll (17.3638° N, 87.8581° W), Belize in January 2017. These data are used in conjunction to develop a habitat usage model to understand what features of coral reefs are correlated with the distribution of C. personatus/hyalinus. All code associated with the analysis can be found here: https://github.com/jdselwyn/Habitat_Usage.

Diet DNA metabarcoding data from spiders (Heteropoda venatoria) from Palmyra Atoll (2015-2017) with both individual samples that have and have not been surface sterilized

These are data and code from a study examining the potential for surface contamination to influence diet DNA metabarcoding datasets when DNA is sequenced from full body parts (in this case, the opisthosomas of spider individuals). These datasets include the raw sequencing data, all downstream datasets, and taxonomic assignments collected from database searches on BOLD and GenBank (accessed 2019). The code includes code to reproduce all bioinformatics (merge, filter, match to taxonomies, rarefy, sort) as well as all statistics and figures generated from analyses. Raw data are from DNA extractions of predator gut regions (opisthosomas) and amplification of the CO1 gene using PCR. The predator species is Heteropoda venatoria collected individually with sterilized implements and either the diet sequences from their natural diets were extracted or their diets following feeding spiders in a feeding trial.

Wave setup and wave-induced flooding dataset for "Coastal flooding and sea-level rise allowances in atoll island"

This dataset contains the wave setup and wave-induced flooding from the simulations in a profile of a coral reef island. The complete description of the simulations can be found in "Coastal flooding and sea-level rise allowances in atoll island". The wave setup and flooding values correspond to the median values of the 3 simulations performed for each parameter combination. A measure of the dispersion of the three simulation is also given as the standard deviation of the three simulations.
