Measurements of soil moisture, soil temperature, air temperature, stream temperatue, and stream stage/discharge were collected as part of a long-term monitoring project at the Highlands Biological Station, Western Carolina University, Highlands, North Carolina. The sensor station is located in a remnant old-growth Canada Hemlock Forest (typic subtype) community dominated by an understory of Rhododendron maximum and an overstory of Tsuga canadensis, the majority of which are still alive and have been treated with systemic insecticides to protect against infestations of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. Other trees include Betula alleghanensis, Acer rubrum, and Quercus rubra. The pressure transducer is located in the thalweg of Coker Creek, a second order stream that flows into Lindenwood Lake.

Floral Censuses and Surveys of Insect Visitors to Flowers, University of Michigan Biological Station, Summers 1984-1986

I investigated within- and between-year patterns of flowering phenology of plants and the insects that visited them in an isolated old field in northern Michigan, USA. The project goal was to document the dynamics of resource availabilty (each floral species produced nectar and/or pollen) and assess the implications of its temporal variation on the composition of the community of insects that exploited those resources. I censued the number of open flowers for each species in 50 4-m2 quadrats at 3- 5-day intervals from June-September 1984-1986, and in separate but contemporaneous surveys of the same quadrats recorded each insect species observed on any open flower. GM Snow Study at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI (1982-1987)

Wet and dry deposition were monitored at the University of Michigan Biological Station, which is located near the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula, for three winters. Dry deposition was measured by both conventional bucket method and by measuring increases in concentration in snow samples. Average results of the two methods were in reasonable agreement. The cumulative wet and dry deposition quantities are in good agreement with snowpack accumulations until the first thaw period. Dry deposition to snow accounts for less than 15% of the total H+, SO4-2, NO-3, NH4+, and approximately 25% of the Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, J+, and Cl-, during an average precipitation year. Snowpack measurements were also made under deciduous and red pine canopies. Decreases in H+ and NO-3 were observed under the red pine canopy. Snowmelt and runoff were studied during the 1986-87, 1983-84, and the 1982-83 winters at the University of Michigan Biological Station. For the 1982-83 and 1983-84 winters the first 50% of snowpack acidity was released in melt and rain water equal to 25% of the original snowpack water content. Interaction between the meltwater and the litter layer produced large changes in the concentrations of most species. Runoff to two streams had high SO4-2 and very low NO-3 concentrations. It is concluded that most of the NO-3 is either biologically utilized or retained in the ecosystem, even during the early snowmelt period at this site.

Aspen Forest Stem Map and Tree Census at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI 1974-2018

In 1974, a one hectare plot was established at the University of Michigan Biological Station to further understand successional trajectories of birch and aspen forests in northern Michigan. Trees with a DBH greater than 5 cm were inventoried and later, the location of the tree within the plot was documented by the UMBS resident biologist. Plots were remeasured 5 additional times by different groups at the station.

University of Michigan Biological Station Weather Observations 1980 to Present

This data set includes daily year-round weather measurements and observations recorded at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) from 1980-present. Data primarily serves the purpose of benefitting UMBS researchers needing access to weather data as a confounding variable. Parameters include maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, snowfall, snowpack, and estimated cloud cover and type recorded daily at approximately 08:00. Maximum and minimum temperatures were measured at the Biological Station campus with National Weather Service liquid-in-glass thermometers housed in a Weather Service (a.k.a., Cotton Region) shelter located on State Road. Precipitation was measured with either a Belfort Rainfall Transmitter 5915 or an ETI NOAH IV Total Precipitation Gauge in the “UV Field” located immediately northwest of the Biological Station campus. Snowfall and snowpack were also measured in the UV Field on snowboards using National Weather Service according to National Weather Service snow measurement guidelines. Cloud cover was estimated in oktas and classified into one of the ten basic cloud types.

Stem maps of eight 1 ha forest plots distributed around Ann Arbor, MI and around the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)

In this project we established a network of forest inventory plots to gather the data needed to forecast future forest performance under global change. Data collected from forest inventory plots, i.e., size and location of individual trees from all ages and species, have been shown to be particularly useful to link tree species demographic rates (survival, growth, age at maturity, fecundity) with community characteristics (assemblages and species turnovers), and are also widely used to estimate biomass removal (logging) and biomass production (carbon sequestration).

Data from nitrogen isotopic analyses used to calculate biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) rates and field measurements from lichen, bryophyte, litter, and soil samples in MAT2006 plots, Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2022-2023.

This dataset contains nitrogen (N) fixation and isotope data from experimental samples collected at Toolik Lake, Alaska during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Sampling was conducted across multiple block treatments to capture spatial variability and included four substrate types: lichen, moss, litter, and soil. Within each plot, substrates were collected systematically along transects to ensure representative sampling, with lichen samples collected opportunistically due to lower abundance. Samples were incubated in the field under ambient conditions using 15N₂ to measure biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). In 2023, a short-term wetting experiment was conducted to assess the influence of moisture on BNF rates, with subsamples exposed to controlled additions of water. Across both years, data include isotope ratios, incubation conditions, moisture, fresh and dry biomass, and treatment assignments. The dataset provides information on BNF across substrate types, moisture regimes, and fertilization treatments in Arctic tundra. These data support investigation of N cycling processes, the influence of moisture and fertilization on fixation rates, and variability across vegetation types. The dataset is complete for the two field seasons (2022 and 2023) and includes sample- and block-level metadata necessary for reuse in ecological and biogeochemical research.

Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Physical, chemical and biological properties of forest and home lawn soils

Abstract: One-meter soil cores were taken to evaluate soil texture, bulk density, carbon and nitrogen pools, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen content, microbial respiration, potential net nitrogen mineralization, potential net nitrification and inorganic nitrogen pools in 32 residential home lawns that differed by previous land use and age, but had similar soil types. These were compared to soils from 8 forested reference sites. Purpose: Soil cores were obtained from residential and forest sites in the Baltimore, MD USA metropolitan area. The residential sites were mostly within the Gwynns Falls Watershed (-76.012008W, -77.314183E, 39.724847N, 38.708367S and approximately 17 km2) Lawns on residential sites were dominated by a variety of cool season turfgrasses. Forest soil cores were taken from permanent forest plots of the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) LTER (Groffman et al. 2006). These remnant forests are over 100 years old with soils that were comparable in type and texture to those underlying the residential study sites. Soils from all sites were from the Manor series (coarse-loamy, micaceous, mesic Typic Dystrudepts), which are well-drained upland soils with loamy textures and bedrock at 5 to 10 feet below the soil surface. To aid the site selection process we used neighborhoods in the Baltimore City metropolitan area that have been mapped using HERCULES, a high resolution land cover classification system designed to assist in the study of human-ecological systems (Cadenasso et al. 2007). Using HERCULES and additional data sources, we identified residential sites that were similar except for single factors that we hypothesized to be important predictors of ecosystem dynamics. These factors included land use history (agriculture and forest, n = 10 and n = 22), housing density (low and medium/high, n = 9 and n = 23), and housing age (4 to 58 yrs old, n = 32). Field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states in a non-tidal, salinizing peat marsh in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, June 2018 - ongoing

This dataset package details a field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states found within a salinizing, non-tidal peat marsh in the coastal Everglades. There are four datasets included: FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_HydroGeo includes point measurements of soil surface elevation, bedrock elevation, soil depth, water depth, and porewater salinity across ecosystem states: emergent marsh (sawgrass dominated), submerged marsh (submerged aquatic vegetation), and unvegetated open water. The survey was conducted between November 2019 to January 2020. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio contains plot-scale (1 m^2) biological measurements from emergent marsh (sawgrass). Biological measurements (total sawgrass, average individual sawgrass biomass, and total sawgrass aboveground biomass), are inherently plot-level but geomorphic and hydrologic measurements were averaged (n = 3) for each plot. Standard deviations are provided. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio_LongTerm contains biological plot-scale (1 m^2) measurements at a bi-monthly timestep from Nov 2019 - July 2022 from a subset of plots (n = 9) included in the FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio dataset. Each bi-monthly measurement is the average value across all 9 nine plots. Standard deviations are also included. FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH contains long-term measurements of soil surface elevation change and vertical accretion from surface elevation change and marker horizon plots from June 2018 - May 2023. Average and standard errors across all plots are included as well as measurements from each plot. Also included is the cumulative number of dry days based on the average soil surface elevation for all plots. Data collection for all datasets is complete, except for FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH. SET-MH measurements are still ongoing.

We surveyed naturally occurring tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima) plants in a long-term nitrogen addition field experiment at the Kellogg Biological Station's T7 untilled succession plots in the Main Cropping System Experiment (https://lter.kbs.msu.edu/research/long-term-experiments/main-cropping-system-experiment/). We collected data on the defensive stem nodding morph (which helps plants evade apex-galling herbivores) and presence of galls in 2016, 2021, and 2022.

Annual Net Primary Production on the Main Cropping System Experiment at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (1990 to 2018)

Dataset Abstract Aboveground annual net primary production (ANPP) has been measured on the LTER main site since 1990 and on the successional and forested sites since 1993. ANPP is measured at peak biomass for a given treatment. In some systems with multiple harvests or complex communities that have peaks occurring at different times of the year, measurements are taken at multiple times per year. Additional ANPP measurements are made where appropriate using leaf litter traps, estimates of diameter from tree basal diameter and for the poplar treatment occasional destructive harvests.
