Blockchain and Its Application in the Peer Review of Scientific Papers: A Systematic Review

Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology that ensures the security and transparency of data, guaranteeing that it cannot be altered. Its application in the peer review of scientific papers can contribute to improving the integrity, transparency, and efficiency of the process, mitigating issues of manipulation and fraud. This work analyzes the contributions of various research studies that address the use of blockchain technology in peer review. The study is a systematic literature review (SLR) in which the PRISMA methodology was applied. Fifty primary studies were identified through searches in databases such as Scopus, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, and ACM. The analyzed research reveals innovative approaches, such as decentralized solutions, smart contracts, and token economy, to address challenges like biases, transparency, and speed in the review process. It is concluded that this technology can enhance the transparency and efficiency of peer review, and has the potential not only to overcome current limitations in peer review but also to redefine the structure and culture of scientific research.

Data on: The role of technical characteristics in blockchain adoption: survey data from German social media network users

Blockchain has become a hyped emerging technology that is predicted to be heavily influential in all our lives. Yet, until now, it has failed to deliver most of its advertised benefits. To tackle this problem and provide an explanation for the missing wider success, this study focuses on the role of technology features in the adoption of blockchain. Thus, this research integrates the view on technological characteristics, represented by aspects of the mindfulness concept, with the sociological aspects influencing technology adoption decisions based on the widely used unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). The resulting research model is evaluated using the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) estimation approach with German social media network. The findings indicate that only high-level knowledge of distinct technology features (uniqueness) is influencing adoption decisions while the missing deeper understanding of these features hinders a careful evaluation of its benefits and meaningful use. This research expands the technology adoption literature by highlighting the role of technical characteristics and combining social, psychological and technological factors into one model. Further, it helps practitioners to understand the causes for the limited success of blockchain and advances the general knowledge on technology adoption.

Systematic review blockchain, public and accounting

The keywords used for the analysis are "blockchain", "public" and "accounting". The selection of the articles was conducted with an analysis of the metadata on the TUTTO’s database of the University of Turin. The research gave 1954 results focusing attention in the period between 2016 and 2019. Selecting only publications in peer review the results have been reduced to 167. The research presented as a collection of the various databases the following results divided by type of publishing house or database: Scopus (Elsevier)(115), ScienceDirect Journals (Elsevier)(81), Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science)(51), Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science)(39), Taylor & Francis Online - Journals(16), MEDLINE/PubMed (NLM)(14), Sociological Abstracts(13), SpringerLink Open Access(10), Oxford Journals (Oxford University Press)(10), Sage Journals (Sage Publications)(9), SpringerLink(8), Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)(8), PMC (PubMed Central)(8), Walter De Gruyter Journals/Yearbooks(6), Informa - Taylor & Francis (CrossRef)(6), ACM Digital Library(5), arXiv(4), Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science)(4), Academic Law Reviews (LexisNexis)(3), HAL (CCSd)(3). Only the sources in English are considered only by reducing the selection to 160 articles. By eliminating the books and duplications the results have been reduced to 156.
