Grain size and clay mineralogy data of the Esplugafreda sequence (Spain) with stable carbon, oxygen and clumped isotope data of soil carbonates

<p>This datasets contains 1) grain size distribution data of mudstone paleosols of the Esplugafreda sequence (Esplugafreda and Claret Formations) measured by laser diffraction, and 2) clay mineralogy measured by powder X-ray diffraction, as well as 3) stable carbon, oxygen and clumped (D47) isotope compositions of soil carbonates. The Esplugafreda sequence is found in the Tremp-Graus Basin in the southern forefront of the Pyrenees and consists of continental sediments formed in a coastal alluvial setting during the late Paleocene and early Eocene.</p> <p>In addition, a proxy dataset of late Paleocene and PETM continental temperatures of the northern hemisphere is also included.</p>

Bulk Carbon and Amino Acid nitrogen isotope data from Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) and European flounder (Platichthys flesus) muscle tissue samples from the western and central Baltic Sea

<p><span>Eutrophication, increased temperatures and stratification can lead <span>to massive, filamentous, N<sub>2</sub>-fixing cyanobacterial (FNC) blooms in coastal ecosystems with largely unresolved consequences for the mass and energy supply in pelagic and benthic food webs. Mesozooplankton adapt to not top-down controlled FNC blooms by switching diets from phytoplankton to microzooplankton, resulting in a directly quantifiable increase in its trophic position (TP) from 2.0 (herbivore) to as high as 3.0 (carnivore). If this process in mesozooplankton, we call trophic lengthening, was transferred up to higher trophic levels of a food web, a large loss of energy could result in massive declines of fish biomass. </span></span><span>We used compound-specific nitrogen stable isotope data of amino acids (CSIA) to estimate and compare </span><span>the nitrogen (N) sources and TPs of cod and flounder (mesopredators) from areas</span><span> </span><span>with influence of FNC blooms (central Baltic Sea) and without it (western Baltic Sea)</span><span>. We tested if FNC-caused </span><span>trophic lengthening in mesozooplankton is carried over to fish.</span><span> The TP of cod from the western Baltic, feeding mainly on decapods, was equal to the global mean value (4.1, secondary carnivore). Only cod from the central Baltic, mainly feeding on zooplanktivorous pelagics, had a higher TP (4.8, near-tertiary carnivore), indicating a strong carry-over effect of </span><span>FNC-</span><span>caused trophic lengthening from mesozooplankton. In contrast, the TP of molluscivorous flounder (3.2 ± 0.2 in both areas), associated with the benthic food web, was unaffected by trophic lengthening. This suggests that FNC blooms cause a large loss of energy in zooplanktivorous but not in molluscivorous mesopredators. If FNC blooms continue to detour energy at the base of the pelagic food web, the TP of cod will not return to global mean values and the fish stock not recover. Monitoring the TP of key species can identify fundamental changes in ecosystems and provide useful information for resource management.</span></p>

Meterological and stable carbon, oxygen and clumped isotope data of land snails Clausilia pumila, Succinella oblonga and Trochulus hispidus from Europe

<p>These data include site information and collection dates of land snails (Clausilia pumila, Succinella oblonga and Trochulus hispidus), meteorological data of collection sites of molluscs derived using the ClimateEU software, as well as carbon, oxygen and clumped isotope compositions of snail shells of the mentioned three species from culturing experiments and natural populations across Europe. During the laboratory experiments individuals of the three species were kept at 12, 18 and 24 Celsius temperatures in climate chambers, fed exclusively by fresh lettuce and humidity was controlled using tap water (d18O: -9.29+-0.52 permil, V-SMOW). d13C, 18O and D47 values of snail shells from lab experiments and field-collections were determined in two laboratories (Isnt. for Nuclear Research, Debrecen, and Geological Institute, ETH Z&uuml;rich) using IRMS. Size-Dependent Dynamics of the Internal Carbon Pool Drive Isotopic Vital Effects in Calcifying Phytoplankton

<p>Isotopic offsets in biogenic calcite from equilibrium values can provide unique insights into the physiology and mechanisms of carbon regulation in calcifying phytoplankton. This study examines the impact of varying CO2 (controlled via pH) on five coccolithophore species chosen for varied cell sizes, physiology, and calcification. The study investigates isotopic offsets in coccolith calcite and organic matter, in relation to carbon demand and supply (<i>µ</i>/CO2). Species-specific CO2/pH optima for growth (<i>µ</i>opt) were derived from variations in growth rates with varying CO2 concentrations. Growth rates for all species declined with rising CO2 (decreasing pH) due to H+-driven inhibition. <i>C. braarudii&nbsp;</i>and<i> C. leptoporus</i> exhibited high <i>µ</i>opt values (suggesting high carbon-demand) and limited growth under low CO2 (high pH) suggesting carbon limitation. Under low CO2 supply, when growth rates were CO2-limited, both species exhibited coincident isotopic depletion in calcite and organic matter as a consequence of CO2 diffusion into the cell that experienced no equilibration as a result of a highly depleted internal carbon pool. In these two species, isotopic values in calcite &nbsp;remained unaffected by growth rates and CO2 concentration (<i>µ</i>/CO2) when CO2&nbsp;was sufficient for optimal growth. <i>G. huxleyi&nbsp;</i>and<i> G. oceanica&nbsp;</i>displayed optima for growth (<i>µ</i>opt) at low CO2 concentrations and showed no growth limitation under low CO2 (indicating low carbon-demand). Both species experienced depleted (negative) vital effects caused by an excess of CO2 diffusion&nbsp;into the small internal carbon pool of the cell when diffusive carbon supply outpaced low demand (low <i>µ</i>/CO2). Enriched (positive) vital effects were observed under low carbon supply and high demand, likely due to diffusive loss of CO2 from the cell's intracellular carbon pool&nbsp;due to a lower intracellular pH. <i>C. carterae</i> exhibited an intermediate <i>µ</i>opt and isotopically equilibrated intracellular carbon pool such that δ13C values in calcite and organic matter suggested a shared carbon pool. This study illustrates that pH-CO2 driven vital effects and fractionation into organic matter indicate the residence time for carbon in the intracellular carbon pool, and the size of this pool is proportional to cell size. <i>C. leptoporus&nbsp;</i>and<i> C. carterae</i> can elevate intracellular pH to minimise CO2 leakage, whereas vital effects in <i>G. huxleyi</i> and <i>G. oceanica&nbsp;</i>are caused by diffusive CO2 due to the small size of their internal carbon pool.</p>

Data from: Isotopic composition of particulate black carbon in the northern Indian Ocean

<p>The dataset contains the concentration and stable isotopic composition of particulate black carbon (PBC) in the surface waters of the northern Indian Ocean. Samples were collected during multiple cruises to the Northern Indian Ocean (locations, date and time are provided in the datasheet) along with end member sampling of riverine particulate. Surface water samples were filtered onto 0.7 micron GF/F filters (precombusted at 400 degree Celsius) and oven-dried. Particulate black carbon was estimated following the chemothermal oxidation (CTO - 375) method. Briefly, samples were treated using HCl fumes to remove inorganic carbon fractions followed by heating at 400 degree celsius for 24 hours in active airflow to remove the organic carbon fraction. The residual carbon (BC in micromoles per litre) and its isotopic composition (represented by delta notation in permil) was measured using an elemental analyzer (EA: Flash 2000, Thermo Scientific) connected to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS: Delta V, Thermo Scientific). The precision of measurement by repeated analysis of standards was better than 10 % for PBC concentration and 0.1 permil for its isotopic composition. The data is associated with the manuscript accepted in Geophysical Research Letters titled, 'Isotopic evidence for degradation of particulate black carbon in the ocean.</p>

Year-round observations of stable carbon isotopic composition of diacids and related compounds in fine aerosols at Tianjin, North China – Data set

<p>To better understand the origins and photochemical processing of water-soluble organic aerosols in the Tianjin region, North China, we studied the stable isotopic composition (&delta;<sup>13</sup>C) of diacids, oxoacids, &alpha;-dicarbonyls, citric acid and fatty acids in fine aerosols (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) collected at an urban (Nankai District, ND; <em>n</em> = 121) and a suburban (Haihe Education Park, HEP; <em>n</em> = 40) sites in Tianjin from 5 July 2018 to 4 July 2019. The &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of diacids and related compounds were measured using a capillary gas chromatography (Agilent 7890B) coupled with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-irMS) system. Based on seasonal variations in &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of selected species and linear relations with their concentrations and mass ratios, we found that the diacids and related compounds were mainly derived from fossil fuel including coal combustion and biomass burning and photochemical processing, preferably in gaseous- and aqueous-phases in warm (March-September) and cold (October-February) periods, respectively, in Tianjin, North China.</p>

Mikhailik.</p> <p>Abstract:&nbsp;The Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain, a major topographic feature of the Pacific Ocean floor, is composed of seamounts capped with fossil coral reef deposits formed originally close to sea level but lying today hundreds of meters in water depth due to prolonged subsidence. These fossil reef deposits are important archives of paleoenvironmental changes and yield information on the subsidence history of the seamounts. We studied Sr isotope composition of Oligocene&ndash;Miocene coral reef limestone from Koko Guyot in the southern part of the Emperor Seamount Chain in order to assess the subsidence dynamics. The age of the studied samples with coral fragments established by Sr isotope stratigraphy varies from 26.3 to 20.1 Ma, while the youngest samples deposited at water depth of &gt; 120 m, barren in corals and composed exclusively of bryozoans and coralline algae, are 15.3 Ma in age. The subsidence rate of the Koko Guyot volcanic structure was not uniform. Combining data of previous studies and those obtained in this study, the assessed subsidence rate was 0.046 &plusmn; 0.005 mm/yr during the first 25&ndash;30 Myr (from about 49&ndash;44 Ma ago). During this period of time, Koko Guyot was in bathymetric interval favourable for coral reef development and its subsidence was compensated by rapid vertical reef growth. Successively, the subsidence rate decreased to an average value of 0.019 &plusmn; 0.003 mm/yr from 20 to 15 Ma. The decrease in bottom subsidence coincided with unfavourable environmental conditions for coral reef development, leading to the disappearance of corals. The subsidence rate reached a value of 0.015 &plusmn; 0.002 mm/yr in the last 15 Ma, comparable to the present-day subsidence rate. The change in the sedimentary setting is also confirmed by the study of &delta;<sup>88</sup><sup>/86</sup>Sr.</p>

Dataset: Stable oxygen and carbon isotopes in freshwater pearl mussels from ultrastructurally distinct shell portions

<p>Oxygen isotopes in stream water can serve as natural tracers of watershed dynamics. Freshwater pearl mussels provide &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>water</sub> estimates that overcome temporal and spatial limitations of instrumental records. The reliability of shell‑based &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>water</sub> reconstructions depends on understanding which shell layer biomineralizes closer to oxygen isotopic equilibrium with ambient water<em>.</em></p> <p>This dataset contains isotope data obtained from freshwater pearl mussel shells<em>,</em> as discussed in the article titled "Biologically driven isotope fractionation in ultrastructurally different shell portions of freshwater pearl mussels <em>(Margaritifera margaritifera):</em> Implications for stream water &delta;<sup>18</sup>O reconstructions".</p> <p>The dataset includes &delta;<sup>18</sup>O and &delta;<sup>13</sup>C values from field-collected and tank-reared bivalve shells, complemented by <em>in-situ</em> &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>water</sub> measurements from the tanks and shell growth rates of the tank-reared specimens.</p>

Data from: Carbon isotope trends across a century of herbarium specimens suggest CO2 fertilization of C4 grasses

<p>Increasing atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> is changing the dynamics of tropical savanna vegetation. C<sub>3</sub> trees and grasses are known to experience CO<sub>2</sub> fertilization, whereas responses to CO<sub>2</sub> by C<sub>4</sub> grasses are more ambiguous. Here, we sample stable carbon isotope trends in herbarium collections of South African C<sub>4</sub> and C<sub>3</sub> grasses to reconstruct <sup>13</sup>C discrimination. We found that C<sub>3</sub> grasses showed no trends in <sup>13</sup>C discrimination over the past century but that C<sub>4</sub> grasses increased their <sup>13</sup>C discrimination through time, especially since 1950. These changes were most strongly linked to changes in atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> rather than to trends in rainfall climatology or temperature. Combined with previously published evidence that grass biomass has increased in C<sub>4</sub>-dominated savannas, these trends suggest that increasing water use efficiency due to CO<sub>2</sub> fertilization may be changing C<sub>4</sub> plant-water relations. CO<sub>2</sub> fertilization of C<sub>4</sub> grasses may thus be a neglected pathway for anthropogenic global change in tropical savanna ecosystems.</p>
