Harmonized chronologies of a global late Quaternary pollen dataset (LegacyAge 1.0) in R

<p>We present a chronology framework named LegacyAge 1.0 containing harmonized chronologies for 2831 pollen records (downloaded from the Neotoma Paleoecology Database and the supplementary Asian datasets) together with their age control points and metadata in machine-readable data formats. Here, we provide the R-code for calculation and comparison chronologies with embedded manual, metadata for code runs, Bacon output graphs of each record, graphs comparison of original chronologies and LegacyAge 1.0, and a short shared-screen video of the R-code to show the usage on two example records separately.</p> <p>Supplement to: Li, C., Postl, A. Chronology of key moments in the history of women's rights in Italy

<p>Following Goldin's methodological framework from her paper "Why Women Won" on the history of women's labour market outcomes in the US, we have compiled an analogous, detailed chronology of key moments in the history of women's rights in Italy. Our dataset classifies events into four main types: economic/social factors, political milestones, workplace regulations, and bodily autonomy issues. These classifications are inspired by Goldin's typology and provide a structured lens through which to view women's history. We use and analyse this dataset in our corresponding research article entitled "Studying the gender gap &agrave; la Claudia Goldin: a historical perspective on women's work in Italy".</p> <p>Sources: Unless otherwise stated, sources are general: Camera dei Deputati (2021) on women&rsquo;s suffrage, Anne Cova (2022) and the websites of Noi Donne, Il Consiglio Nazionale delle Donne Italiane, Unione Femminile Nazionale, Istituto Luigi Sturzo on women&rsquo;s movements.</p> <p>Note: As Italy was a founding member of the EU, some events relate to relevant EU directives with an impact on Italy, for which we could not find implementing legislation, but which were referred to by Italian lawyers.</p>

CHRONOLOGICAL APPROACH TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ECUADOR'S DEBT WITH THE IMF AND THE WB.

<p><a name="_Hlk162621365"></a><span>Where did Ecuador's foreign debt originate and grow to alarming levels? </span><span>The purpose of this article is to describe, from an analytical perspective based on the contributions of various authors, the origin of Ecuador's external debt with international institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as the support that these organizations provide for the development of the countries of the South, case Ecuador. To achieve this purpose, a documentary methodology was implemented that included an exhaustive review of studies focused on the specific variables subject to analysis, the PRISMA tool and Atlas.ti were used. The results show that the creation of these financing agencies in their attempt to support the financial stability of developing countries has not been sufficiently effective in improving the welfare conditions of a good percentage of the population and has generated an imbalance in the sustained development of the poorest countries. It is concluded that the capitalist system gives predominant priority to the economic growth of nations, thus relegating in its model the consideration of human development. This orientation does not contribute effectively to the improvement of crucial aspects such: education, health and the standard of living of the population.</span></p>

Data from: Evaluation of breeding distribution and chronology of North American scoters

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: North America's scoter species are poorly monitored relative to other waterfowl. Black (<em>Melanitta</em> <em>americana</em>), surf (<em>M.</em> <em>perspicillata</em>), and white-winged (<em>M</em>. <em>deglandi</em>) scoter abundance and trend estimates are thus uncertain in many parts of these species' ranges. The most extensive source of waterfowl abundance and distribution data in North America is the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey (WBPHS). Although the WBPHS effectively monitors most species, both its timing and geographic coverage may not allow for accurate scoter monitoring. Therefore, our goal was to better define when and where scoters breed to help interpret survey results and optimize survey methods for scoters.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Canadian boreal shield, taiga shield, and low-Arctic tundra; Alaska.</p> <p><strong>Taxon</strong>: Scoters (Genus: <em>Melanitta</em>)</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We integrated satellite telemetry tracking data from scoters marked at multiple molting, staging, breeding, and wintering areas along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to quantify continent-wide breeding chronology and distribution. We also examined possible drivers of variation in timing of arrival, length of stay, and departure at nesting locations.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We documented a northwest-to-southeast distribution of breeding sites across Alaska and Canada. On average, scoters arrived at nest sites on June 1. Surf scoters arrived earliest, stayed for shorter periods, and departed earliest. Pacific-wintering scoters began breeding earlier than Atlantic-wintering birds. Additionally, birds arrived at nesting locations earlier in years with earlier snowmelt, and later snowmelt reduced lengths of stay for males. Breeding chronology also varied by age group, with adults arriving earlier than subadults.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: Our study is the first to comprehensively describe spatial variation in timing of breeding of both Atlantic and Pacific populations of all three scoter species across North America. Our results increase our understanding of how current surveys enumerate scoters and will inform possible supplemental efforts to improve continental monitoring of scoter populations.</p>

Chronological dataset of soil respiration fluxes from a seasonally dry forest in Northwest México

<p>Soil respiration data was acquired and analyzed as described in Vargas-Terminel et al.[1]. Briefly, soil respiration was obtained by measuring changes in CO<sub>2</sub> concentrations with a portable soil flux system attached to a static chamber covering a portion of soil. Each measurement cycle in soil lasted 3 mins and was done monthly during a four-year period in 8 to 12 locations within three sites of tropical dry forest in Northwestern Mexico (a recent abandonment, a mid-secondary forest and an old-growth). &nbsp;Also, simultaneous soil temperature and volumetric soil water content measurements were carried with a thermocouple thermometer and a soil moisture sensor, respectively. Finally, soil respiration flux was calculated with commercial soil data processing software.</p>

Data from: Estimating polymorphic growth curve sets with non-chronological data

<p>1. When we collect the growth curves of many individuals, orderly variation in the curves is often observed rather than a completely random mixture of various curves. Small individuals may exhibit similar growth curves, but the curves differ from those of large individuals, whereby the curves gradually vary from small to large individuals. It has been recognized that after standardization with the asymptotes, if all the growth curves are the same (anamorphic growth curve set), the growth curve sets can be estimated using non-chronological data; otherwise, i.e., if the growth curves are not identical after standardization with the asymptotes (polymorphic growth curve set), this estimation is not feasible. However, because a given set of growth curves determines the variation in the observed data, it may be possible to estimate polymorphic growth curve sets using non-chronological data.</p> <p>2. In this study, we developed an estimation method by deriving the likelihood function for polymorphic growth curve sets. The method involves simple maximum likelihood estimation. The weighted nonlinear regression and least squares method after the log-transform of the anamorphic growth curve sets were included as special cases.</p> <p>3. The growth curve sets of the height of cypress (<i>Chamaecyparis obtusa</i>) and larch (<i>Larix kaempferi</i>) trees were estimated. With the model selection process using the AIC and likelihood ratio test, the growth curve set for cypress was found to be polymorphic, whereas that for larch was found to be anamorphic. Improved fitting using the polymorphic model for cypress is due to resolving underdispersion (less dispersion in real data than model prediction).</p> <p>4. The likelihood function for model estimation depends not only on the distribution type of asymptotes, but the definition of the growth curve set as well. Consideration of these factors may be necessary, even if environmental explanatory variables and random effects are introduced.</p>

Data from: Chronological and biological age predict seasonal reproductive timing: an investigation of clutch initiation and telomeres in birds of known age

Female vertebrates that breed earlier in the season generally have greater reproductive success. However, evidence suggests that breeding early may be costly, thus leading to the prediction that females with fewer future reproductive events will breed earlier in the season. While chronological age is a good indicator of remaining lifespan, telomere lengths may also be good biomarkers of longevity as they potentially reflect lifetime 'wear and tear' (i.e. "biological age"). We examined whether variation in the timing of the first seasonal clutch was related to age and telomere length in female dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), predicting that older females and those with shorter telomeres would breed earlier. Both predictions held true and were independent of each other, as telomere length did not significantly vary with age. These results suggest that females may adjust their reproductive effort based on both chronological and biological age.
