Modelling OB stars with TESS: Construction of an asteroseismic sample

Lack of high-precision continuous space-photometry has slowed the unlocking of OB star interiors in large numbers from asteroseismology. TESS is now providing data for large samples of stars allowing us to calibrate interior physics such as core overshooting, interior rotation and envelope mixing from pulsation frequencies. Calibrations of this kind are of major importance to quantitatively describe and predict subsequent evolutionary stages and ultimately their stellar remnants. In this talk I will present new results on the largest OB asteroseismic sample with TESS, which focuses on high frequency pulsators. The sample is characterised by a diverse variability, including pulsations, binarity, and rotational modulation connected to spots induced by magnetic fields. As an important test against theory I discuss the placement of the stars in the theoretical pulsation instability strips, computed using the stellar evolution code MESA and the stellar pulsation code GYRE. This test reveals that several stars show pulsational variability not predicted by current models and additional physics needs to be taken into account. This includes rotation, which is especially important as many OB stars are known to rotate at significant fractions of their critical rotation rates and has a profound effect on their pulsation physics. Identifying signatures of rotational modulation in the TESS photometry is therefore of paramount importance as it allows us to measure the surface rotation rate accurately, assess the influence of rotation on the pulsation physics, and remove degeneracies in asteroseismic modelling. The new TESS results of pulsating OB stars allow their pulsational and structural properties to be determined for the first time ever for such a large sample.

Data Set Generated by the Fuzzy Model Constructed to Describe Execution Tracing Quality

The uploaded data set was generated by the fuzzy model published in T. Galli, F. Chiclana, and F. Siewe. Genetic algorithm-based fuzzy inference system for describing execution tracing quality. Mathematics, 9(21), 2021. ISSN 2227-7390. doi: https://doi.org/10.3390/ma th9212822. URL https://www.mdpi.com/2571-5577/4/1/20.

The goal of the data generation is to make the published model available in the form of data points in a 5D space, which facilitates the construction of simpler models to approximate the original model. The names of the columns in the .csv file constitute the quality properties of execution tracing: (1) accuracy, (2) legibility, (3) implementation, and (4) security, while column (5) contains execution tracing quality derived from the fuzzy model. The indices in brackets show the column indices in the .csv file.

All variables lie in the continuous range [0, 100], where 100 means the best possible quality value and 0 the complete lack of quality or the lack of the given quality property. While generating the data, the inputs were increased by a step-size 5 and the model's output was collected, i.e. 4 inputs, from including 0 to 100 with 21 data points (21^4 = 194481).

Data supporting "Constructing Emergent U(1) Symmetries in the Gamma-Prime (Γ′) model"

Frustrated magnets can elude the paradigm of conventional symmetry breaking and instead exhibit signatures
of emergent symmetries at low temperatures. Such symmetries arise from “accidental” degeneracies within the
ground state manifold and have been explored in a number of disparate models, in both two and three dimen-
sions. Here we report the systematic construction of a family of classical spin models that, for a wide variety
of lattice geometries with triangular motifs in one, two and three spatial dimensions, such as the kagome or hy-
perkagome lattices, exhibit an emergent, continuous U(1) symmetry. This is particularly surprising because the
underlying Hamiltonian actually has very little symmetry — a bond-directional, off-diagonal exchange model
inspired by the microscopics of spin-orbit entangled materials (the Γ′-model). The construction thus allows
for a systematic study of the interplay between the emergent continuous U(1) symmetry and the underlying
discrete Hamiltonian symmetries in different lattices across different spatial dimensions. We discuss the impact
of thermal and quantum fluctuations in lifting the accidental ground state degeneracy via the thermal and quan-
tum order-by-disorder mechanisms, and how spatial dimensionality and lattice symmetries play a crucial role
in shaping the physics of the model. Complementary Monte Carlo simulations, for representative one-, two-,
and three-dimensional lattice geometries, provide a complete account of the thermodynamics and confirm our
analytical expectations.
