Crab population monitoring: Fall 2001 mid-marsh and creekbank crab abundances based on hole counts at GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10
This data set is the first Fall estimate of crab densities at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by counting the number of crab holes within a 625 cm^2 quadrat and converting the counts to number per square meter. Counts were made in the mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 per zone) at all sites. This method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total crab abundance. Plugged holes were excluded from the counts. Mean density across all sites and zones was 342 m^-2 (+/- 158 s.d.).

Summer 2007 crab population survey based on crab hole counts in fifty-four GCE LTER Hammock sites and four GCE LTER study sites
Crab abundance was investigated at fifty-four hammock sampling sites and four Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study sites in June-July 2007 by counting crab holes as a proxy measurement. Each hammock site had six permanent study plots which were previously laid out. Crab holes were counted within a random location inside those six plots at each hammock. Crab holes were counted within a 625 cm^2 area and species were not differentiated in the count, but noted. This method estimates total crab abundance in each study site.

Counts of potential nest predators from Black-throated Blue Warbler territories, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1997 – 2019
This dataset provides counts of potential nest predators recorded on surveys conducted in black-throated blue warbler territories at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Surveys occurred on three gridded study plots at the HBEF: low elevation (250-350 m; 85 ha), middle elevation (450-600 m; 65 ha), and high elevation (750-850 m; 35 ha). See Rodenhouse et al. 2003 for plot details. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Raw neutron counts from a soil water content hydroprobe along the LTER-I transects (control and fertilized) at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986-ongoing
This data package contains raw neutron count data from a series of soil neutron hydroprobe measurements along the permanent LTER-I transects located at Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) in the Jornada Basin of southern New Mexico, USA. The control and treatment transects are parallel to each other and are 2.7 km in length extending from the middle of the College Playa to the foot of Mt. Summerford. The treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Measurement stations are located at 30 meter intervals along each transect, and there are neutron probe access tubes located every station on the control transect (n=89) and at every fifth station at the treatment transect (n=19). Measurements were taken at 5 depths using a neutron probe (CPN Model 503DR Hydroprobe). Neutron probe readings in 3 non-weighing mini-lysimeters along each transect are also included. This dataset consists of the count of thermalized neutrons at 30 cm, 60 cm, 90 cm, 110 cm, and 130 cm depths. These counts are subsequently converted with transect site-specific calibration equations to the volumetric water content data provided in EDI packageID knb-lter-jrn.210012002. Measurements were taken at 2 week intervals from April 1982 to 1987 and monthly thereafter. Data collection for this study is ongoing.
Perennial grass tiller and stolon counts in plots with experimentally altered precipitation variability at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2012-2014
This dataset contains perennial grass tiller and stolon counts collected starting in 2012 for a long-term precipitation variability manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009, has five annual precipitation treatments, and contains 50 plots (10 per treatment). This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. There are high, low, and ambient (control) precipitation variability treatments. Ambient plots receive natural precipitation each year, while variability treatments alternate between 20% and 180% (high variability), or 50% and 150% (low variability) of ambient precipitation each year. Perennial grass tiller and stolon counts were made annually in each plot from 2012-2014. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated as needed.
