Effects of social structure and management on risk of disease establishment in wild pigs

<p>1. Contact heterogeneity among hosts determines invasion and spreading dynamics of infectious disease, thus its characterization is essential for identifying effective disease control strategies. Yet, little is known about the factors shaping contact networks in many wildlife species and how wildlife management actions might affect contact networks.</p> <p>2. Wild pigs in North America are an invasive, socially-structured species that pose a health concern for domestic swine given their ability to transmit numerous devastating diseases such as African swine fever (ASF). Using proximity loggers and GPS data from 48 wild pigs in Florida and South Carolina, USA, we employed a probabilistic framework to estimate weighted contact networks. We determined the effects of sex, social group, and spatial distribution (monthly home range overlap and distance) on wild pig contact. We also estimated the impacts of management-induced perturbations on contact and inferred their effects on ASF establishment in wild pigs with simulation.</p> <p>3. Social group membership was the primary factor influencing contacts. Between-group contacts depended primarily on space use characteristics, with fewer contacts among groups separated by &gt;2 km and no contacts among groups &gt;4 km apart within a month.</p> <p>4. Modeling ASF dynamics on the contact network demonstrated that indirect contacts resulting from baiting (a typical method of attracting wild pigs or game species to a site to enhance recreational hunting) increased the risk of disease establishment by ~33% relative to direct contact. Low-intensity population reduction (&lt;5.9% of the population) had no detectable impact on contact structure but reduced predicted ASF establishment risk relative to no population reduction.</p> <p>5. We demonstrate an approach for understanding the relative role of spatial, social, and individual-level characteristics in shaping contact networks and predicting their effects on disease establishment risk, thus providing insight for optimizing disease control in spatially- and socially-structured wildlife species.</p>

Modeling management strategies for chronic disease in wildlife: predictions for the control of respiratory disease in bighorn sheep

<p>1. Controlling persistent infectious disease in wildlife populations is an on-going challenge for wildlife managers and conservationists worldwide.</p> <p>2. Here, we develop a dynamic pathogen transmission model capturing key features of M. ovipneumoniae infection, a major cause of population declines in North American bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). We explore the effects of model assumptions and parameter values on disease dynamics, including density versus frequency dependent transmission, the inclusion of a carrier class versus a longer infectious period, host survival rates, disease-induced mortality and recovery rates, and the epidemic growth rate.</p> <p>3. We compare the effectiveness of a suite of management actions following an epidemic, including test-and-remove, depopulation-and-reintroduction, range expansion, herd augmentation, and density reduction.</p> <p>4. Our results suggest that test-and-remove, depopulation-and-reintroduction, and range expansion have the potential to facilitate recovery of persistently infected bighorn sheep herds post-epidemic. By contrast, augmentation could lead to worse outcomes than those expected in the absence of management. Management that improves host survival or reduces disease-induced mortality are also likely to improve population size and persistence of chronically infected herds.</p> <p>5. Dynamic transmission models like the one employed here offer a structured, logical approach towards exploring hypotheses and can serve as a basis for planning field experiments and adaptive management. Models should be used iteratively with the field empirical approaches to triangulate on better approaches to wildlife management.</p>

Disease management in two sympatric Apterostigma fungus-growing ants for control the parasitic fungus Escovopsis

<p>Antagonistic interactions between host and parasites are often embedded in networks of interacting species, in which hosts may be attacked by competing parasites species, and parasites may infect more than one host species. To better understand the evolution of host defenses and parasite counter defenses in the context of a multihost, multiparasite system, we studied two sympatric species, of congeneric fungus-growing ants (Attini) species and their symbiotic fungal cultivars, which are attacked by multiple morphotypes of parasitic fungi in the genus, <i>Escovopsis</i>. To assess whether closely-related ant species and their cultured fungi are evolving defenses against the same or different parasitic strains, we characterized <i>Escovopsis </i>that were isolated from colonies of sympatric <i>Apterostigma dentigerum</i> and <i>A</i>. <i>pilosum. </i>We assessed <i>in vitro </i>and <i>in vivo</i> interactions of these parasites with their hosts. While the ant cultivars are parasitized by similar <i>Escovopsis</i> spp., the frequency of infection by these pathogens differs between the two ant species. The ability of the host fungi to suppress <i>Escovopsis</i> growth, as well as ant defensive responses towards the parasites, differ depending on the parasite strain and on the host ant species.</p>

Data from: Pathogen-mediated selection and management implications for white-tailed deer exposed to chronic wasting disease

<p>Pathogens can cause host extinction, affect population dynamics, and influence natural selection. Host susceptibility to pathogens can vary by species, demographics, and genetics which affect epizootic dynamics; ultimately determining population trends and evolution. Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal neuro-degenerative prion disease of cervids, has varying host susceptibility conferred by polymorphisms of the prion protein gene (PRNP) at the 96 codon for white-tailed deer (<em>Odocoileus virginianus</em>). Deer with the homozygous Glycine allele (96GG) are most susceptible and a single Serine allele (96GS/96SS) reduces the risk of infection and mortality. We developed epizootiological models that demonstrate CWD infection and disease-associated mortality were higher for the more susceptible (96GG) genotype; and, infection was higher for males than females. We used population models to evaluate future shifts in genotype frequencies under alternative harvest and infection rate scenarios. Genetic shifts towards less susceptible genotypes were predicted as CWD prevalence increased during the course of an outbreak. This further increased CWD prevalence, and likely environmental contamination from prion shedding, due to longer incubation periods. Alternative harvest management strategies directly influenced CWD prevalence and spread, the rate of genetic selection, and deer population growth. </p> <p><em>Synthesis and applications</em>: We show that CWD transmission varied by sex, age classes, and genotypes, and that CWD disease-associated mortality varied by genotype. Together, these forces lead to CWD-mediated genetic selection for a white-tailed deer population. We predict that genetic selection pressure increases when hunter harvest pressure is lowered, and conversely, increasing hunter harvest can reduce genetic selection rates of antlered deer. Our results support the control of CWD prevalence by aggressive harvest of adult males because they have the highest infection rates. Our results have strong implications for evolution, disease ecology, geographic spread, disease mitigation, and cervid population management.</p>
