Can short-term data accurately model long-term environmental exposures? Investigating the multigenerational adaptation potential of Daphnia magna to environmental concentrations of organic ultraviolet filters

<p>Organic ultraviolet filters (UVFs) are contaminants of concern, ubiquitously found in many aquatic environments due to their use in personal care products to protect against ultraviolet radiation. Research regarding the toxicity of UVFs such as avobenzone, octocrylene and oxybenzone indicates that these chemicals may pose a threat to invertebrate species; however, minimal long-term studies have been conducted to determine how these UVFs may affect continuously exposed populations. The present study modeled the effects of a 5-generation exposure of <em>Daphnia</em> <em>magna</em> to these UVFs at environmental concentrations. Avobenzone and octocrylene resulted in minor, transient decreases in reproduction and wet mass. Oxybenzone exposure resulted in &gt; 40% mortality, 46% decreased reproduction and 4-fold greater reproductive failure over the F0 and F1 generations; however, normal function was largely regained by the F2 generation. These results indicate that <em>Daphnia</em> are able to acclimate over long-term exposures to concentrations of 6.59 μg/L avobenzone, ~0.6 μg/L octocrylene or 16.5 μg/L oxybenzone. This suggests that short-term studies indicating high toxicity may not accurately represent long-term outcomes in wild populations, adding additional complexity to risk assessment practices at a time when many regions are considering or implementing UVF bans in order to protect these most sensitive invertebrate species.</p>

Constraining Bedrock Groundwater Residence Times in a Mountain System with Environmental Tracer Observations and Bayesian Uncertainty Quantification: Modeling and Data Package

<p>Here we present field observations of dissolved noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe), Chloroflourcarbons (CFCs), Sulfurhexaflouride (SF6), and tritium (3H) sampled from the PLM1, PLM6, and PLM7 wells in the East River Colorado (USA) sampled&nbsp;in May, 2021. This observation dataset, along with the presented python modeling scripts to interpret the data, can aide in quantifying groundwater residence times and recharge conditions. The README files describes the directories and scripts.</p>

Multi‐species occupancy modeling reveals methodological and environmental effects on eDNA detection of amphibians in temporary ponds

<p>Aquatic environmental DNA is increasingly used for biodiversity monitoring, such as surveying threatened and invasive species. Mainstreaming these methods in practical applications, however, still requires significant standardisation and optimisation, namely regarding DNA capture methods. Here we evaluated how filter type (standard disc filters vs high-capacity capsules), number of sampling sites, volume of water filtered and environmental factors affected amphibian detection in Mediterranean temporary ponds. The study involved water filtering until clogging at one (capsules) and five (discs) sites from 16 small and shallow ponds, where three urodele and seven anuran species were recorded through sweep-netting and adult observations. Detection probabilities were estimated from site occupancy models based on replicate sampling and from an adaptation of time-to-detection models relating detection probability to volume of water filtered. Discs filtered relatively small volumes (15–1250 mL), with detection probabilities of the two abundant species (<em>Pelobates</em> <em>cultripes</em>, <em>Hyla</em> <em>meridionalis</em>) increasing rapidly with sample size and water volume, reaching almost perfect detection (0.95) at four and seven discs, and 420 mL and 1860 mL, respectively. However, reaching high detection probabilities for rare species (<em>Pelodytes</em> <em>atlanticus</em>, <em>Pleurodeles</em> <em>waltl</em>, <em>Triturus</em> <em>pygmaeus</em>) would require larger sampling effort than that used in our study. Despite filtering much larger volumes (600–5300 mL), filtering with capsules at a single site per pond provided lower detection probabilities for abundant species than filtering with discs at five sites. Rarer species showed no difference between methods, which may be due to small sample sizes and reduced statistical power for species with few detection. The effect of conductivity on species detectability was largely negative, while the influence of water clarity varied across species, and pH had no effects. Overall, our results suggest that eDNA amphibian surveys in Mediterranean temporary ponds need to consider filter clogging, heterogeneous DNA distribution, and highly conductive waters.</p>

Environmental drivers and distribution of cold-water corals in the global ocean - Habitat Suitability Models

<p><strong>Publication Abstract</strong></p> <p>Species distribution models (SDMs) are useful tools for identifying the distribution of marine species in data limited environments. Outputs from SDMs have been used to identify areas for spatial management, analyzing trawl closures, quantitatively measuring the risk of bottom trawling, and evaluating protected areas for improving conservation management. Cold-water corals are globally distributed habitat forming organisms that are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and climate change, but data deficiency remains an ongoing issue for the effective spatial management of these important ecosystem engineers. In this study, we constructed 11 environmental seabed variables at 500m resolution based on the latest multi-depth global datasets and high-resolution bathymetry. Ensemble modeling methods were used to predict the global habitat suitability for ten widespread cold-water coral species, including six reef Scleractinian framework-forming species and four large gorgonian species. Temperature, depth, salinity, terrain ruggedness index, carbonate saturation state&nbsp;and chlorophyll were the most important factors in determining the global distributions of these species. The Scleractinian species <em>Madrepora oculata</em> showed the widest niche breadth, whilst most other species demonstrated somewhat limited niche breadth. The shallowest study species, <em>Oculina varicosa</em>, had the most distinctive niche of the group. The model outputs from this study represent the highest resolution global predictions for these species to date and are valuable in aiding the management, conservation and continued research into cold-water coral species.</p> <p><strong>Data description</strong></p> <p>These datasets (compressed Zip archives) contain the habitat suitability model outputs generated for the publication Tong et al., (2023) doi: 10.3389/fmars.2023.1217851, please refer to the manuscript for methodological details. Model-derived backbarrier marsh width from GEOMBEST+ simulations of barrier island-marsh coupled evolution for a range of environmental conditions. The input parameters were varied for a range of 10 different values for each of the flux of overwash (.2-2 m^3/yr), the rate of sea level rise (1-10mm/yr), and the flux of bay sediment (2-20 m^3/yr) Each simulation was for a one meter change in sea level, starting from one of three initial conditions, an empty backbarrier basin, starting with a narrow (400m wide) backbarrier marsh, and starting with a marsh-filled (2000m wide) backbarrier basin. With 10 variants of each parameter input and 3 initial conditions, this results in 3,000 total simulations run. Each row in the spreadsheet contains the input and output values for an individual simulation. The outputs reported are the final backbarrier marsh width, defined as the distance from the backside of the barrier island to the landward most marsh cell, the change in marsh width, and the rate of change in marsh width.
