Equilibrium climate sensitivity experiments using EC-Earth3-LR model — Surface Air Temperature data

Three experiments was conducted using a EC-Earth model with the EC-Earth3-LR configuration (REF), which couples atmosphere, land, ocean and sea-ice components. First, we performed a pre-industrial (PI) control simulation (E280) using pre-industrial forcing, holding atmospheric constituents constant at 1850 levels (e.g., CO2 concentration at 280 ppm). This simulation was initialized by a pre-run steady restart file (from a 500-year pre-industrial control simulation) and ran for 2000 years. We also conducted two sensitivity experiments (E400 and E560) by adjusting the CO2 concentration to 400 ppm and 560 ppm, respectively, at the start year of the E280 experiment, and continued for over 3000 years (3069 years for E400, and 3013 years for E560). For our statistical analysis, we only considered the integration periods after the spin-up, using the last 2000-year outputs from the three simulations.

The dataset contains Earth system model results from EC-Earth3 presented in the study by Cao et al. (2023).

Cao, N., Zhang, Q., Wang, Z., Power, K.E., & Liu, C. (2023). The non-negligible impact of internal multi-centennial climate variability on estimating equilibrium climate change. Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics of aqueous glycerol menisca

This dataset contains the results of Molecular Dynamics simulations of quasi-2D water-glycerol liquid meniscus, confined between silica-like surfaces. The goal of the simulations is to observe and quantify liquid density layering close to solid surfaces.

The pattern "Glycerol***" refers to the mass fraction of glycerol ("000": pure water, "100": pure glycerol). Each folder contains configuration files and compressed output molecular trajectories. Post-processing is performed on density maps binned on-the-fly using a customized Gromacs version (https://github.com/pjohansson/gromacs-flow-field); frames are placed in a tarball ("wat-gly-*p-eq.tar.gz").

The zipped folder 'scripts.zip' contains a self-contained library of functions to read density maps and a Jupyter notebook with an example of density reading and plotting.

Simulations are performed with Gromacs. We refer to the code documentation for further information (https://manual.gromacs.org/).

Spectroscopy of the Cosmic Web: a view beyond collisional ionisation equilibrium with future X-ray telescopes

This is a special seminar I gave at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA about my Ph.D. research at the Leiden University and the Netherlands Institute for Space Research SRON. Here you can download the presentation slides as well as the recording of the seminar.

Abstract:

In this talk I will focus on the X-ray view of the cosmic web filaments, more specifically the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). Hitomi kick-started an upcoming era of X-ray microcalorimeters which offer an unprecedented spectral resolution of diffuse sources. Many spectral signatures that could not yet have been studied will become feasible for the detection, and my presentation will focus on two of these spectral effects.

Firstly, I will discuss how galaxy cluster photons alter the ionization state of nearby WHIM and affect the column densities of e.g. O VI, O VII, C V, or Ne VIII. Secondly,
I will discuss the feasibility of detecting the circum- and intergalactic medium in X-ray absorption using the extended intracluster medium as a backlight. For this study we used the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations Hydrangea (based on EAGLE) and we reported the feasibility of the detection of cosmic web filaments in OVII and in OVIII absorption with the microcalorimeter arrays onboard Athena and LEM. Last but not least, I will discuss my contribution to updating the cooling curve in the photoionisation model of the plasma code SPEX, and show the comparison to other plasma codes (MEKAL, APEC, Cloudy) and other atomic databases (CHIANTI, ADAS).
