Experimental and model-based investigation of the effect of the free- surface flow regime on the detection threshold of warm water inflow

Experimental and numerical injections of warm water into a free surface flow. Different flow regimes were tested and detection thresholds were determined.

Experiments were done in an outdoor flume, in June 2016. They were monitored by Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing with a double-ended configuration and 20s time resolution. Two flume flow rates Q were tested. For each, a few injection flow rates were done, leading to a total of 10 experiments characterized by an injection ratio R. Only calibrated data are uploaded.

Simulations were carried out on HEC-RAS 5.0, a 1D software developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and based on the experimental flume geometry. A total of 90 simulations were tested with different flow rates, injection percentage and thermal contrast ∆T between flowing water and injected water.

Supplementary data can be found to understand the flume geometry, hydraulic characteristics (Reynolds, Peclet and Froude numbers) and exchanges with the atmosphere for both simulations and experiments.

Data from: Warming alters food web-driven changes in the CO2 flux of experimental pond ecosystems

Evidence shows the important role biota play in the carbon cycle, and strategic management of plant and animal populations could enhance CO2 uptake in aquatic ecosystems. However, it is currently unknown how management-driven changes to community structure may interact with climate warming and other anthropogenic perturbations to alter CO2 fluxes. Here we showed that under ambient water temperatures, predators (three-spined stickleback) and nutrient enrichment synergistically increased primary producer biomass, resulting in increased CO2 uptake by mesocosms in early dawn. However, a 3°C increase in water temperatures counteracted positive effects of predators and nutrients, leading to reduced primary producer biomass and a switch from CO2 influx to efflux. This confounding effect of temperature demonstrates that climate scenarios must be accounted for when undertaking ecosystem management actions to increase biosequestration.

Data from: Biodiversity explain maximum variation in productivity under experimental warming, nitrogen addition and grazing in mountain grasslands

Anthropogenic global warming, nitrogen addition and over-grazing alter plant communities and threaten plant biodiversity, potentially impacting community productivity, especially in sensitive mountain grassland ecosystems. However, it still remains unknown whether the relationship between plant biodiversity and community productivity varies across different anthropogenic influences, and especially how changes in multiple biodiversity facets drive these impacts on productivity. Here we measured different facets of biodiversity including functional and phylogenetic richness and evenness in mountain grasslands along an environmental gradient of elevation in Yulong mountain of Yunnan Lijiang, China. We combined biodiversity metrics in a series of linear mixed-effect models to determine the most parsimonious predictors for productivity, which was estimated by aboveground biomass in community. We examined how biodiversity-productivity relationships were affected by experimental warming, nitrogen addition and livestock grazing. Species richness, phylogenetic diversity and single functional traits (leaf nitrogen content, mg/g), represented the most parsimonious combination in these scenarios, supporting a consensus that single biodiversity metrics alone cannot fully explain ecosystem function. The biodiversity-productivity relationships were positive and strong, but the effects of treatment on biodiversity-productivity relationship were negligible. Our findings indicate that the strong biodiversity-productivity relationships are consistent in various anthropogenic drivers of environmental change.
