Use of social media in the marketing of agricultural products and farmers' turnover in South-South Nigeria
<p class="CxSpFirst"><span>The study investigated the use of social media in the marketing of agricultural products and farmers turnover in South-South Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which the usage of social media in the marketing of agricultural products in Nigeria can enhance efficiency and farmers' sales turnover. It employed the survey research design and data were collected with the help of a structured questionnaire. Research data were analysed using t-test and least square method. The results showed that the use of social media (Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram) in the marketing of agricultural products enhances efficiency and turnover of farmers through a significant reduction in the cost of marketing agricultural products as well as increased awareness and the attendant increase in demand for agricultural produce.</span></p>

Data from: Landscape context and farm uptake limit effects of bird conservation in the Swedish Volunteer & Farmer Alliance
1. In Europe, agri-environmental schemes (AES) have been unsuccessful in halting biodiversity declines to any great extent. Two particular shortcomings of AES include the low farm uptake and the modest efficacy of many AES options. Partly in response to these shortcomings, initiatives encouraging farmers to take an active role in biodiversity conservation have gained in popularity. However, almost no evaluations of such initiatives exist. 2. We evaluated uptake of conservation advice on farms in the Swedish Volunteer & Farmer Alliance, a BirdLife Sweden-coordinated project aimed at farmland bird conservation, and the response of farmland birds to those actions using farm-level survey data, in a before-after implementation assessment. 3. Uptake was higher for unsubsidised (i.e. non-AES) measures than for AES options, and depended on farmers' interest in nature, farm size (higher uptake on larger farms) and production type (higher on organic farms). 4. In general, abundances of non-crop nesting and field-nesting bird species declined between inventory years (median interval 3 years). Decreases were more marked in agriculturally marginal regions than in more arable-dominated regions, and declines were stronger on organic than conventional farms. 5. Negative abundance trends among non-crop nesting species were reduced by an increasing number of conservation measures at the farm, but only in the more arable-dominated landscapes. Changes in other non-crop species and in field-nesting species did not significantly relate to implemented measures, but the power to detect such effects was generally small due to the small sample size of high-uptake farms as well as high inter-farm variability. 6. Implications: Our results suggest that Volunteer Farmer Alliances and the addition of unsubsidised measures may be successful in changing the local number of non-crop nesting farmland birds at the farm level, and especially so in intensively managed agricultural landscapes. Thus, unsubsidised measures can be a useful addition to the set of agri-environment tools, although their effects on breeding bird numbers are (as with AES) dependent on landscape context, as well as on ensuring high on-farm uptake of different interventions.
Data from: Oral microbiomes from hunter-gatherers and traditional farmers reveal shifts in commensal balance and pathogen load linked to diet
Maladaptation to modern diets has been implicated in several chronic disorders. Given the higher prevalence of disease such as dental caries and chronic gum diseases in industrialized societies, we sought to investigate the impact of different subsistence strategies on oral health and physiology, as documented by the oral microbiome. To control for confounding variables such as environment and host genetics, we sampled saliva from three pairs of populations of hunter-gatherers and traditional farmers living in close proximity in the Philippines. Deep shotgun sequencing of salivary DNA generated high-coverage microbiomes along with human genomes. Comparing these microbiomes with publicly available data from individuals living on a Western diet revealed that abundance ratios of core species were significantly correlated with subsistence strategy, with hunter-gatherers and Westerners occupying either end of a gradient of Neisseria against Haemophilus, and traditional farmers falling in between. Species found preferentially in hunter-gatherers included microbes often considered as oral pathogens, despite their hosts' apparent good oral health. Discriminant analysis of gene functions revealed vitamin B5 autotrophy and urease-mediated pH regulation as candidate adaptations of the microbiome to the hunter-gatherer and Western diets, respectively. These results suggest that major transitions in diet selected for different communities of commensals and likely played a role in the emergence of modern oral pathogens.
Data from: Can social partnerships influence the microbiome? insights from ant farmers and their trophobiont mutualists.
Mutualistic interactions with microbes have played a crucial role in the evolution and ecology of animal hosts. However, it is unclear what factors are most important in influencing particular host-microbe associations. While closely related animal species may have more similar microbiota than distantly related ones due to phylogenetic contingencies, social partnerships with other organisms, such as those in which one animal farms another, may also influence an organism's symbiotic microbiome. We studied a mutualistic network of Brachymyrmex and Lasius ants farming several honeydew-producing Prociphilus aphids and Rhizoecus mealybugs to test whether the mutualistic microbiomes of these interacting insects are primarily correlated with their phylogeny or with their shared social partnerships. Our results confirm a phylogenetic signal in the microbiomes of aphid and mealybug trophobionts, with each species harboring species-specific endosymbiont strains of Buchnera (aphids), Tremblaya and Sodalis (mealybugs), and Serratia (both mealybugs and aphids) despite being farmed by the same ants. This is likely explained by strict vertical transmission of trophobiont endosymbionts between generations. In contrast, the ants' microbiome is potentially shaped by their social partnerships, with ants that farm the same trophobionts also sharing strains of sugar-processing Acetobacteraceae bacteria, known from other honeydew-feeding ants and which likely reside extracellularly in the ants' guts. These ant-microbe associations are arguably more 'open' and subject to horizontal transmission or social transmission within ant colonies. These findings suggest that the role of social partnerships in shaping a host's symbiotic microbiome can be variable, and is likely dependent on how the microbes are transmitted across generations.
Data from: Farmer fidelity in the Canary Islands revealed by ancient DNA from prehistoric seeds
The Canary Islands were settled in the first millennium AD by colonizers likely originating from North Africa. The settlers developed a farming economy with barley as the main crop. Archaeological evidence suggests the islands then remained isolated until European sea-travellers discovered and colonized them during the 14th and 15th centuries. Here we report a population study of ancient DNA from twenty-one archaeobotanical barley grains from Gran Canaria dating from 1050 to 1440 cal AD. The material showed exceptional DNA preservation and genotyping was carried out for 99 single nucleotide markers. In addition 101 extant landrace accessions from the Canary Islands and the western Mediterranean were genotyped. The archaeological material showed high genetic similarity to extant landraces from the Canary Islands. In contrast, accessions from the Canary Islands were highly differentiated from both Iberian and North African mainland barley. Within the Canary Islands, landraces from the easternmost islands were genetically differentiated from landraces from the western islands, corroborating the presence of pre-Hispanic barley cultivation on Lanzarote. The results demonstrate the potential of population genetic analyses of ancient DNA. They support the hypothesis of an original colonization, possibly from present day Morocco, and subsequent isolation of the islands and reveal a farmer fidelity to the local barley that has lasted for centuries.

Connecting the Digital Bridges Factors Influencing Farmers' Attitude towards e-Governance
<p><span>The e-governance streamlines the delivery of government services to the farmers, such as agricultural subsidies, credit facilities, insurance schemes, extension services and other citizen charters. The objective of this study was to determine the factors influencing the attitude of farmers towards e-governance. The scale used for attitude measurement was standardized through Judge-rating and pre-testing and forty-one statements were used to assess the attitude of the farmers on a Likert scale. One hundred twenty-five (125) farmers from Phulbari upazila in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh were selected for data collection using a multi-stage random sampling procedure through structured interview method.<span> </span>The findings revealed that a significant proportion (68.0 percent) of the respondents held a moderately to highly favourable attitude towards e-governance. Although seven socio-economic factors had significant relationship with farmers’ attitude towards e-governance; the key influencing factors identification through multiple linear regression and stepwise regression indicated that knowledge of e-governance, educational qualification, age, and organizational participation were the most important. Thus, to enhance farmer engagement and trust in e-governance, policy formulation should be aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of e-governance involves a multifaceted approach that addresses their specific needs and challenges need to be addressed.</span></p>

Dataset on Behavioral Distortions Affecting Farmers' Crop Diversification Decisions
<p><span>Based on a qualitative analysis conducted using QDA Miner Lite software, data extracted from nine studies examining behavioral distortions among farmers in relation to their resistance to adopting crop diversity has been compiled. These studies sourced from literature have yielded a total of 36 statements from farmers, each representing various cognitive biases categorized with codes D1 – Endowment effect, D2 – status quo bias, D3 - anchoring, D4 – hyperbolic discounting, D5 – bounded rattionality, and D6 – cognitive distortion. The statements, initially in textual form, were organized into a structured table format for comprehensive analysis and comparison across different studies. This approach facilitates a detailed examination of how farmers' perceptions, decisions, and practices are influenced by cognitive biases such as the endowment effect, status quo bias, cognitive distortion, hyperbolic discounting, bounded rationality, and anchoring. The table serves as a framework for understanding the complexities and challenges farmers face in transitioning from monoculture to diversified cropping systems, shedding light on the psychological and practical barriers that hinder agricultural innovation and sustainability efforts globally.</span></p>
