The marginal leaf crenations of K. ×hankeyi are situated more towards the upper parts of the leaf margins, as in one of its parents, K. longiflora, rather than virtually along the whole margin, as is found in the other parent, K. sexangularis. B. Flowers of K. ×hankeyi have yellow corolla lobes and a greenish yellow tube. C. Leaves of K. sexangularis turn a bright crimson red when exposed to high levels of solar irradiation. D. FIGURE 1. A. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is a small, glabrous, shrubby species. Leaf margins are coarsely crenate or undulate-crenate into rounded, harmless teeth. The adaxial surfaces of the corolla lobes are bright crimson red. B. The stems of K. manginii are thin, rather weak, and often droop. The corolla tube and adaxial lobe surface vary slightly from orange-red to deep crimson red. As in K. blossfeldiana, the lobes are spreading. Both photographs: Gideon F. Smith.

Large growing plants with leaves variously covered in a golden-bronze tomentum are marketed and sold under a range of monikers, some of which are likely trade designations only. The plants illustrated in A to C are generally available under K. beharensis 'Aureo-aeneus', although this is not an established cultivar name. The variant illustrated in B has entire leaf margins. The plant of K. beharensis illustrated in C is cultivated in the Shoenberg Temperate House in the Missouri Botanical Garden, St Louis, U.S.A. D–F. Cultivar names, or at least monikers presented as cultivar names, such as K. beharensis 'Brown Dwarf', K. beharensis 'Monstrose', K. beharensis 'Nana', and K. beharensis 'Curly', are generally applied to a range of small-growing, hairy variants of K. beharensis, some of which are illustrated here. FIGURE 2. Plants of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana in the horticultural trade sometimes referred to as "var. feuerblüte Hort.", have brilliant red flowers borne on firm, erect peduncles. Jacobsen (1954: 819, 1986: 609) speculates that it might be a hybrid between K. blossfeldiana and K. glaucescens (Britten 1871: 393). One of the earliest-documented, artificially produced hybrids between representatives of K. subg. Kalanchoe and K. subg. Bryophyllum, i.e., across subgenus boundaries, were recorded by Resende (1956: 241–242) when he produced hybrids between K. blossfeldiana "var. feuerblüte Hort." [included in K. subg. Kalanchoe] and K. daigremontiana Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 128) [included in K. subg. Bryophyllum]. Photograph: Gideon F. Smith.
