Data from: Dyadic leader-follower dynamics change across situations in captive house sparrows

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span> Individuals can behave as either leaders or followers in many taxa of collectively-moving animals. Leaders initiate movements and may incur predation risks while followers are thought to be more risk-averse. As a group encounters different challenges and ecological situations, individuals in the group may change their social role. We investigated leader and follower roles using dyads of captive house sparrow (<i>Passer domesticus</i>) during both exploration of a novel environment and a simulation of predator attack. During the exploration of a novel environment individuals behaved consistently either as leaders or followers. However, in the simulated attack tests, individuals in the dyads switched their roles, with 'followers' leading the escape flights and 'leaders' following them. Our study provides evidence of (i) consistent differences between individuals in behavior during social escape and (ii) a relationship between social roles across different situations. We suggest that such relationship hinges on individual risk-taking tendencies, which manifest through different social roles across different ecological situations. We further speculate that risk-taking individuals might gain benefits by following risk-averse individuals during an escape flight. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Data from: Genetic diversity and population structure in contemporary house sparrow populations along an urbanization gradient.

House sparrow (Passer domesticus) populations have suffered major declines in urban as well as rural areas, while remaining relatively stable in suburban ones. Yet, to date no exhaustive attempt has been made to examine how, and to what extent, spatial variation in population demography is reflected in genetic population structuring along contemporary urbanization gradients. Here we use putatively neutral microsatellite loci to study if and how genetic variation can be partitioned in a hierarchical way among different urbanization classes. Principal coordinate analyses did not support the hypothesis that urban/suburban and rural populations comprise two distinct genetic clusters. Comparison of FST values at different hierarchical scales revealed drift as an important force of population differentiation. Redundancy analyses revealed that genetic structure was strongly affected by both spatial variation and level of urbanization. The results shown here can be used as baseline information for future genetic monitoring programmes and provide additional insights into contemporary house sparrow dynamics along urbanization gradients.

Supplementary Tables of Whole Genome Sequencing and Assembly of the House Sparrow, Passer domesticus

<h2>Abstract</h2> <p>The common house sparrow,&nbsp;<em>Passer domesticus</em>&nbsp;is a small bird belonging to Passeridae. We provide here a high-quality whole genome sequencing and assembly for the house sparrow, The final genome assembly was made using a Shovill/SPAdes which consisted of contigs spanning 268193 bases. We employed rigorous statistical thresholds to check the coverage as the Passer genome showed considerable similarity with&nbsp;<em>Gallus gallus</em>&nbsp;(chicken) and&nbsp;<em>Taeniopygia guttata</em>&nbsp;(Zebra finch) genomes providing a functional annotation. This new annotated genome assembly will be a valuable resource as a reference for comparative and population genomic analyses of passerine, avian, and vertebrate evolution</p> <div> <p><strong>Significance</strong>&nbsp;Avian evolution has been of great interest in the context of extinction. Annotating the genomes such as Passerines would be a significant interest as we could understand the behavior/foraging traits and further explore their evolutionary landscape. In this work, we provide a full genome sequence of Indian house sparrow,&nbsp;<em>viz. Passer domesticus</em> which will serve as a useful resource in understanding the adaptability, evolution, geography, Allee effects and circadian rhythms.</p> </div>
