The Fire Effects Information System (FEIS) provides up-to-date information about fire effects on plants, lichens, and animals. It was developed at the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. The FEIS database contains literature reviews, taken from current English-language literature of about 900 plant species, 7 lichen species, about 100 wildlife species, 17 Research Project Summaries, and 16 Kuchler plant communities of North America. The emphasis of each review and summary is fire and how it affects species. Background information on taxonomy, distribution, basic biology, and ecology of each species is also included. Reviews are thoroughly documented, and each contains a complete bibliography. Managers from several land management agencies (United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, and United States Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service) choose the species included in the database. Think-aloud tests with information specialists of ai-systems Iris.ai and Yewno (Danish)
<p>This dataset contains the nine think-aloud tests conducted in April-June 2021. </p> <p>Think-aloud tests were designed to test the extent an academic search could be conducted in the two AI-powered search systems, Iris.ai (https://Iris.ai/) and Yewno Discover (https://www.yewno.com/discover). Pilot tests and validation tests were undertaken with two independent reviewers in March 2021. The validity tests were based on the principles outlined in Kim 2009, testing the content, face and construct validity of the test instrument (appendix 1). Consequently, the grammar and consistency of the language were improved and questions were reframed before the final think aloud tests were conducted in April-June 2021.</p> <p> </p> <p>Ten information specialists were invited to take part in the tests. One test person from the Yewno tests dropped out of the study, resulting in an overall drop-out rate of 10%. Accordingly, five think-aloud tests in Iris.ai and four in Yewno were held at the university libraries in Aarhus and Copenhagen.</p> <p>Two testers ran each test. One conducted the dialogue and guided the test person through the tasks set in the think-aloud test. The second, noted down the test persons behavior, humour and comments. All tests were recorded using Zoom, both audio, and screen were recorded as well as the test persons behaviour was observed. The recordings were saved to Edumedia for the duration of the project and destroyed thereafter. </p>
Knowledge organization systems and their consequences for information retrieval
<p>Traditionally, research on knowledge organization systems (KOS) and information retrieval discussed the relative advantages or disadvantages of using controlled vocabularies versus free-text or intellectual indexing versus automatic indexing methods for indexing and search. Experiments and case studies variously showed the superiority of either approach without reaching a final conclusion on this seemingly basic question. As full-text indexing has become more possible and now prevalent, the discussion of the relative merits of KOS – not only as substitute but in combination with full-text – was not settled but continued with new challenges. With the advent of the Semantic Web, KOS (now appearing as ontologies) became important tools in new information retrieval applications and were pushed once again to the research forefront. With different disciplines working in the field, the terminology around KOS has become more and more ambiguous up to the point that tracing research in the literature is difficult – ironically something that traditional KOS have always tried to mitigate.<br> This paper summarizes recent discussions of the impact of KOS on information retrieval and attempts to show and unify different research strands from library science research on subject indexing, information retrieval and the Semantic Web. Whereas earlier impact studies on retrieval resulted in clearly measurable outcomes (for example changes in precision/recall), recent use of KOS in Semantic Web applications or other information systems has switched from pure search scenarios to exploration (browse) and contextualization, for which clear (and calculable) evaluation or quality standards and </p>

<p>This dataset supplements the article with the title "Deep decarbonisation pathways of the energy system in times of unprecedented uncertainty in the energy sector", published in Energy Policy. </p> <p>The dataset contains the following:</p> <ul> <li>The Latin Hypercube Sample of the multipliers that are applied to the key input parameters of ETSAP-TIAM in order to generate 1000 different states of the world regarding economic and demographic growth, energy resources potentials, energy technology costs, climate sensitivity and radiative forcing, LULUCF CO<sub>2</sub> sink potential, CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration potential, and decoupling between energy consumption and economic development. The multipliers are sampled from the underlying probability distributions described in the article. </li> <li>The results (at the global scale) from four scenario families for each one of the 1000 wofld states. These scenario families are: <ul> <li>BASE_SSP2: Describes the development of the global energy system consistent with recent trends and policies.</li> <li>2C_SSP2: Introduces to the BASE_SSP2 scenario a global constraint of 2 °C as the maximum post-industrial temperature change from 2020 to 2100.</li> <li>2C_SSP2_DA30: Delayed climate action. Data from: Landscape genetics informs mesohabitat preference and conservation priorities for a surrogate indicator species in a highly fragmented river system
Poor dispersal species represent conservative benchmarks for biodiversity management because they provide insights into ecological processes influenced by habitat fragmentation that are less evident in more dispersive organisms. Here we used the poorly dispersive and threatened river blackfish (Gadopsis marmoratus) as a surrogate indicator system for assessing the effects of fragmentation in highly modified river basins and for prioritizing basin-wide management strategies. We combined individual, population and landscape-based approaches to analyze genetic variation in samples spanning the distribution of the species in Australia's Murray–Darling Basin, one of the world's most degraded freshwater systems. Our results indicate that G. marmoratus displays the hallmark of severe habitat fragmentation with notably scattered, small and demographically isolated populations with very low genetic diversity—a pattern found not only between regions and catchments but also between streams within catchments. By using hierarchically nested population sampling and assessing relationships between genetic uniqueness and genetic diversity across populations, we developed a spatial management framework that includes the selection of populations in need of genetic rescue. Landscape genetics provided an environmental criterion to identify associations between landscape features and ecological processes. Our results further our understanding of the impact that habitat quality and quantity has on habitat specialists with similarly low dispersal. They should also have practical applications for prioritizing both large- and small-scale conservation management actions for organisms inhabiting highly fragmented ecosystems.
Occupancy in dynamic systems: accounting for multiple scales and false positives using environmental DNA to inform monitoring
<div class="page"> <div class="section"> <p>Occupancy is an important metric to understand current and future trends in populations that have declined globally. In addition, occupancy can be an efficient tool for conducting landscape-scale and long-term monitoring. A challenge for occupancy monitoring programs is to determine the appropriate spatial scale of analysis and to obtain precise occupancy estimates for elusive species. We used a multi-scale occupancy model to assess occupancy of Columbia spotted frogs in the Great Basin, USA, based on environmental DNA (eDNA) detections. We collected three replicate eDNA samples at 220 sites across the Great Basin. We estimated and modeled ecological factors that described watershed and site occupancy at multiple spatial scales simultaneously while accounting for imperfect detection. Additionally, we conducted visual and dipnet surveys at all sites and used our paired detections to estimate the probability of a false positive detection for our eDNA sampling. We applied the estimated false positive rate to our multi-scale occupancy dataset and assessed changes in model selection. We had higher naïve occupancy estimates for eDNA (0.37) than for traditional survey methods (0.20). We estimated our false positive detection rate per qPCR replicate at 0.023 (95% CI: 0.016-0.033). When the false positive rate was applied to the multi-scale dataset, we did not observe substantial changes in model selection or parameter estimates. Conservation and resource managers have an increasing need to understand species occupancy in highly variable landscapes where the spatial distribution of habitat changes significantly over time due to climate change and human impact. A multi-scale occupancy approach can be used to obtain regional occupancy estimates that can account for spatially dynamic differences in availability over time, especially when assessing potential declines. Additionally, this study demonstrates how eDNA can be used as an effective tool for improved occupancy estimates across broad geographic scales for long-term monitoring.</p> </div> </div>
