Batteries of Leiden jars
The battery consists of 9 Leiden jars. They are all closed with wooden lids, in which brass rods ended with knobs are mounted. Each of them is connected to the other ones by means of brass rods. The Leiden jar is the oldest form of a capacitor, a device used to store electrical charges. The jars connected in a battery allowed for increasing the amount of the charge stored. This device was independently invented in 1745 by Pieter van Musschenbroek (1692–1761), a professor at Leiden University (hence the name of the device), and Ewald Jürgen von Kleist (1700–1748), a lawyer and scholar working in Kamień Pomorski. The jar could be electrically charged by contacting the rod with an energised body. Olla Jar
This coarse earthenware, unglazed "olla jar" was recovered in 1966 by Stanely South from the Russellborough site (31BW556) in Brunswick County, NC (Accession no. 66011a4). Russellborough was one of the most notable structures at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site because it was the residence of two royal colonial governors, Gov. Arthur Dobbs and Gov. William Tryon. It was originally built by Capt. John Russell in 1751 and was eventually burned by the British at the beginning of the American Revolution. Archaeological investigations at the site have shown a number of interesting features about the house including a 30-foot-long tunnel extending from one corner of the house, where this complete jar was found. The jar measures 30.5 cm tall, 19 cm wide at the base, with a 13.2 cm orifice diameter, and weighs 5306 grams. Chinese jar with dragon-and-tiger motif
Ceramic with black glaze. Dated Eastern Han dynasty (25-220). Zhejiang Provincial Museum Gushan Branch, Hangzhou, China. At the shoulder of the long-neck jar are two humanoid figures with their animal campanions--a dragon (with horns) and a tiger (no horns)--and two winged creatures (wild geese or cranes?) among them, all marching in a counter-clockwise direction around the neck of the jar. Ski Wax Jar
Sheet metal jar from the 1930's containing Kiva ski wax, with slight odour of tar. The number 4 indicates that the wax was meant for wet snow. The instructions are written in Finnish, English and German. Kiva was a label of Esa Rossi (1895–1962), the most famous ski wax manufacturer in Finland up until the 1960's. Rossi was also a benefactor of many Finnish elite cross-country skiers; he thought that it was impossible for skiers to train successfully for major competitions if they must also do full-time work. One of his famous proteges was Kalle Jalkanen (1907–1941), whose anchor leg decided the gold medal for Finland in the Olympic relay race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936. Kiva ("Nice") wax was made in Rossi's factory in Helsinki until the 1960's. It was also exported to other countries, especially to Germany. OCS fluxes from a coastal Antarctic tundra and soils measured by in situ static chamber method and lab-based jar incubations
<p>The Antarctic tundra, dominated by non-vascular photoautotrophs (NVP) like mosses and lichens, serves as a vital habitat for sea animals, which contribute organic matter and oceanic sulfur to the land, potentially influencing sulfur transformations. Here, we measured OCS fluxes from the Antarctic tundra and linked them to soil biochemical properties.</p> <p>This dataset therefore is collected from these experiments. It includes the figure source data associated with a peer-reviewed publication that is currently under review. Once the manuscript is published, the URL and DOI number will be provided here and this description will be updated accordingly.</p> <p>Results revealed that the NVP-dominated upland tundra acted as an OCS sink (-1.0 ± 0.6 pmol m<sup>-2</sup> s<sup>-1</sup>), driven by NVP and OCS-metabolizing enzymes from soil microbes (e.g., <em>Acidobacteria</em>, <em>Verrucomicrobia</em>, and <em>Chloroflexi</em>). In contrast, tundra within sea animal colonies exhibited OCS emissions (1.4 ± 0.4 pmol m<sup>-2</sup> s<sup>-1</sup>), resulting from the introduction of organosulfur compounds that stimulated concurrent OCS production. Furthermore, sea animal colonization likely influenced OCS-metabolizing microbial communities and further promoted OCS production. Overall, this study highlighted the role of sea animal activities in shaping soil-atmospheric exchange of OCS through interacting with soil chemical properties and microbial compositions.</p>

While we think of red-figure mainly in terms of drawing, it differs from black-figure also in the very different apportionment of glazed and unglazed surfaces on a vase. The preparation of these surfaces was probably the responsibility of the potter, and for this reason, the new technique is associated with a potter rather than a painter. On some works combining red-figure and black-figure, a single painter seems to have done both; here, however, two different artists are likely. The scene on the obverse depicts the hero Herakles with his club and the god Apollo with bow and arrows, struggling over the Delphic tripod, which Herakles sought to carry off.
